Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A certain king built himself a palace and summoned two persons to decorate it for him. The king divided his palace into two parts, putting one person in charge of one half and the second in charge of the other. One of the persons decorated his part of the palace with beautiful paintings of birds and animals. But the second person painted his half of the palace with black dye which was reflecting everything like a mirror. When the king came to judge the two decorations, everything he had seen in the first person's part he also saw in the second's part, since it was reflected in its black dye like in a mirror. Not only that, but even all the king could wish to put in the first half of his palace appeared in the second half. This found favor in the eyes of the king"--
Download or read book The Epistle of James and Eschatology written by Todd Penner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1996-05-01 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to challenge the common view that the epistle of James is a late Hellenistic Wisdom document that has little importance for our understanding of earliest Christianity. The author undertakes two main projects: first, an examination of the various assumptions about date, setting and content that have influenced how the letter of James has been interpreted; and second, a re-reading of the letter that seeks to uncover the special character of the epistle by stressing the fusion of its eschatological framework with its ethical instruction. The literary, cultural, and social contextualization of James that emerges sheds new light on this often neglected text and its place in early Christianity.

Download or read book Targum and New Testament written by Martin McNamara and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2011 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relevance of the Targums (Aramaic translations of the Hebrew Bible) for the understanding of the New Testament has been a matter of dispute over the past three hundred years, principally by reason of the late date of the Targum manuscripts and the nature of the Aramaic. The debate has become more focused by reason of the Qumran finds of pre-Christian Aramaic documents (1947) and the identification of a complete text of the Palestinian Targum of the Pentateuch in the Vatican Library (Codex Neofiti, 1956). Martin McNamara traces the history of the debate down to our own day and the annotated translation of all the Targums into English. He studies the language situation (Aramaic and Greek) in New Testament Palestine and the interpretation of the Scriptures in the Targums, with concepts and language similar to the New Testament. Against this background relationships between the Targums and the New Testament are examined. A way forward is suggested by regarding the tell-like structure of the Targums (with layers from different ages) and a continuum running through for certain texts.

Download or read book Inerrancy and the Spiritual Formation of Younger Evangelicals written by Carlos R. Bovell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-03-01 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Inerrancy and the Spiritual Formation of Younger Evangelicals, readers are urged to consider their pastoral responsibilities toward students. Evangelical leaders and teachers, in particular, should be more sensitive to the fact that not all younger evangelicals are convinced of the Bible's inerrancy. Some are earnestly searching for an orthodox alternative but, in the process, becoming spiritually unravelled. As responsible shepherds of God's people, evangelical leaders must better understand the negative effect of presenting inerrancy as a doctrine crucial for faith.

Download or read book The Oral and the Written Gospel written by Werner H. Kelber and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1997-11-22 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spoken words process knowledge differently from writing. What happens when speech turns into text? In reappraising literary scholars' propensity to trace Jesus' sayings back to the assumed original version, the author argues that in the oral medium each rendition of a saying is the original. Orality works with multiple originals, rather than with single originality. In what may be the most extraordinary thesis of the book, Kelber argues that the written gospel is related less by evolutionary progression than by contradiction to what preceded it.
