Book Science and Power

Download or read book Science and Power written by Federico Mayor and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science is the most powerful tool of the twentieth century, but is its influence properly harnessed? As physicists explore the fundamental nature of matter and molecular biologists uncover the very nature of life, many people feel threatened. Can human beings retain their dignity and freedom in the fact of such great powers for good or evil? This book examines the often-difficult relationship between scientists and those who govern them, and looks at the history of this relationship, where it stands today, and what needs to be done to ensure that science is used in the future for the greatest good of the greatest number.

Book World Development Report 2019

Download or read book World Development Report 2019 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work is constantly reshaped by technological progress. New ways of production are adopted, markets expand, and societies evolve. But some changes provoke more attention than others, in part due to the vast uncertainty involved in making predictions about the future. The 2019 World Development Report will study how the nature of work is changing as a result of advances in technology today. Technological progress disrupts existing systems. A new social contract is needed to smooth the transition and guard against rising inequality. Significant investments in human capital throughout a person’s lifecycle are vital to this effort. If workers are to stay competitive against machines they need to train or retool existing skills. A social protection system that includes a minimum basic level of protection for workers and citizens can complement new forms of employment. Improved private sector policies to encourage startup activity and competition can help countries compete in the digital age. Governments also need to ensure that firms pay their fair share of taxes, in part to fund this new social contract. The 2019 World Development Report presents an analysis of these issues based upon the available evidence.

Book The Ecological History of European Forests

Download or read book The Ecological History of European Forests written by K. J. Kirby and published by C A B International. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest is the natural vegetation of most of Europe. Although the majority has been destroyed by human activity over the centuries, a considerable amount remains and has been managed to varying degrees and for a wide variety of reasons. This has resulted in a large number of natural and semi-natural landscapes and habitat types over the region and a high diversity of plant and animal communities adapted to them. The growing interest in natural history and the environment in recent years has resulted in a greater demand for information on the complex ecological history of European forest. This book is unique in providing wide ranging and detailed case studies on specific aspects, including grazing, management practices and conservation and overviews, from recognized authorities, of the latest research on the ecological history of forests and woodland in Europe. It consists of selected papers given at an international conference of forest historians organized in association with the British Ecological Society and the International Union of Forest Research Organizations at Nottingham University in September 1996. Contributions come from the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia, the Low Countries, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Turkey. This book is essential reading for ecologists, conservationists, landscape historians, foresters and geographers. It will also be of interest to advanced students in these areas.

Book Computational Methods for the Innovative Design of Electrical Devices

Download or read book Computational Methods for the Innovative Design of Electrical Devices written by Slawomir Wiak and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-10-21 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Methods for the Innovative Design of Electrical Devices is entirely focused on the optimal design of various classes of electrical devices. Emerging new methods, like e.g. those based on genetic algorithms, are presented and applied in the design optimization of different devices and systems. Accordingly, the solution to field analysis problems is based on the use of finite element method, and analytical methods as well. An original aspect of the book is the broad spectrum of applications in the area of electrical engineering, especially electrical machines. This way, traditional design criteria of conventional devices are revisited in a critical way, and some innovative solutions are suggested. In particular, the optimization procedures developed are oriented to three main aspects: shape design, material properties identification, machine optimal behaviour. Topics covered include: • New parallel finite-element solvers • Response surface method • Evolutionary computing • Multiobjective optimization • Swarm intelligence • MEMS applications • Identification of magnetic properties of anisotropic laminations • Neural networks for non-destructive testing • Brushless DC motors, transformers • Permanent magnet disc motors, magnetic separators • Magnetic levitation systems

Book The Macroeconomic Effects of Public Investment

Download or read book The Macroeconomic Effects of Public Investment written by Mr.Abdul Abiad and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-05-04 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides new evidence of the macroeconomic effects of public investment in advanced economies. Using public investment forecast errors to identify the causal effect of government investment in a sample of 17 OECD economies since 1985 and model simulations, the paper finds that increased public investment raises output, both in the short term and in the long term, crowds in private investment, and reduces unemployment. Several factors shape the macroeconomic effects of public investment. When there is economic slack and monetary accommodation, demand effects are stronger, and the public-debt-to-GDP ratio may actually decline. Public investment is also more effective in boosting output in countries with higher public investment efficiency and when it is financed by issuing debt.
