Book excerpt: The purpose of this research study was to examine the effect of technology, in particular the effect of one-to-one devices in literacy and math academic achievement. The study explored how technology may affect students’ reading and math scores. The study involved students from a public school district located in Upstate New York in the county of Chemung. The data analysis was based on the annual Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) MAP Growth Rasch Unit reading and math assessment scores to measure student academic achievement in literacy and math. Using a Repeated Measures ANOVA and t-test, the research study examined students’ NWEA MAP Growth Rasch Unit reading and math scores for a cohort of five hundred and seventy-eight students. The reading and math scores of the same five hundred and seventy-eight participants in the study were analyzed through the course of two consecutive years following the implementation of one-to-one devices as an instructional tool. The data represented fall and spring NWEA MAP Growth assessment Rasch Unit reading and math scores from 2017 to 2019. The annual reading and math scores were compared to better understand the effect of technology on students’ reading and math academic achievement when one-to-one devices are implemented. Results showed noteworthy improvement in students’ literacy and math academic achievement after the implementation of one-to-one devices for a span of two years.

Options for personalization have increased as personal computing devices have become increasingly affordable and available in schools and developers created software to support individual student learning. In recent years, it has become more common for schools to embrace schoolwide models of PL. We collected data from schools in the Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC)'s Breakthrough School Models program. Our study seeks to describe the practices and strategies these schools used to implement PL, understand some of the challenges and facilitators, and consider these alongside achievement findings to discern patterns that may be informative. Teachers and students reported higher levels of many aspects of personalization than their counterparts in a national sample. These included time for one-on-one tailored support for learning; using up-to-date information on student progress to personalize instruction and group students; students tracking their own progress; competency-based practices; and flexible use of staff, space, and time. However, some more-difficult-to-implement aspects did not appear to differ from practices in schools nationally, such as student discussions with teachers on progress and goals; keeping up-to-date documentation of student strengths, weaknesses, and goals; and student choice of topics and materials. We estimate study students gained about 3 percentile points in mathematics relative to a comparison group of similar students. In reading, there was a similar trend, though it was not statistically significant. Low-performing and high-performing students appeared to benefit"--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: The intent of this study was to determine the effectiveness of one-to-one devices in student achievement and engagement in a middle school class setting. The study involved 4 teachers in an urban southern California school district, involving roughly 120 students in 7th and 8th grade English Language Arts classes. Data collection methods included observations, surveys, questionnaires, mini-interviews, and data collected from the MyData and CAASPP websites. The results of the data analysis of student engagement exhibited an average increase of 55% in 7th grade and 14% in 8th grade. In addition, 48 students achieved Standard Met in the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium. Furthermore, the student learning experience became pleasant and an enjoyable experience with the integration of Chromebooks compared to traditional teacher led lessons. The results of this case study indicate that integrating technology features into lessons, may be an effective way to increase student engagement and achievement.
