This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Book in United States History The value of biography in teaching history to young pupils is well recognized. The personal, or human, element that this form of narration adds to the text arouses the interest that is essential to the study of history. Care should be taken, however, not to overemphasize biography lest the relative importance of the in dividual and the event be misunderstood and lest the historical connection between events be lost. The biographies furnished in' this text are abundant, and they have been selected because, taken together, they cover nearly all the events of the history of our country that the young pupil need know. Wherever biography is not available, or wherever it is advisable to emphasize the event rather than the individual or to preserve a closer connection between events, the author has resorted to the ordinary form of narration. In preparing the text he has used portions of his earlier work, A Primary History of the United States. When undertaken properly the study of history is not only very useful, but is a source of delight. If the pupil, in taking up the study for the first time, can see in it the wonderful story of people who have gone before him and builded that he might live the better, he will acquire a liking for history that will abide with him in after years. To give to the young people of America not only the advantages, but the pleasure, that may be found in the study of the history of their country is the purpose of the author. With the hope that his purpose will be fulfilled, this little book is sent forth on its mission. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Junior History of the United States That part of United States history which most appeals to the young mind has been selected. Story, biography, geography and literature have been woven into the narrative; and yet the mind is led in proper and continuous order from the beginning to the end. The book is a semi-reader, or may be made so. But a word of warning may be necessary. We learn to read by reading. The student's mind should be directed to the subject matter, and not to the mere expression of the thought. In making use of the book as a reader, do not forget that it is a history first, and secondly a reader. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The con crete and the personal, therefore, everywhere receive emphasis. There has been a persistent effort to make leaders and patriots the centre of great movements and important situations. By getting a glimpse of these men as they appeared to their friends and acquaintances, and also some notion, even though slight, of their per sonal qualities, the pupil through his sympathetic imagi nation comes into vital touch with the life of the past. In fact, in a very real sense he shares in that life, and thus not only enlarges his experience but shapes his thought and fashions his ideals after the manner of the great and the good of bygone days. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of United States History The old method of teaching history by as signing a certain number of pages in the text book to be memorized, is, we are glad to be able to say, pretty generally a thing of the past, having been discarded by all progressive educators. The topical method has found favor because it is the method which devel ops the student's individuality, and makes it possible for him to compare the views of differ ent authors, thus doing away with the diffi culty some teachers experience from diversity of text books. It is the best because it teaches the pupil to think and compare as well as to remember facts. When carried to its full de velopment the topical method becomes the outline method, which combines with the ads vantages possessed by the topical method many which it does not possess. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our United States: A History Throughout this volume, the larger emphasis has been placed upon social and industrial history. Such vital topics as the industrial revolution, the westward movement, the rise and control of large corporations, questions of labor, of the tariff, money, and banking, these have received much more than the usual space. However, in writing the story of our wars, the author has proceeded upon the theory that if the story is worth telling at all, it is worth telling well. Therefore, an endeavor has been made to present a vivid narrative of military cam paigns, rather than a mere colorless summary. Teachers will find the story of the campaigns of the Civil War narrated from the geographical point of view, a method of approach which clears away the difficulties of the story when told merely as a chronology of events. Above all, the author has kept in View the dominant pur pose in present-day teaching of history and government; that is, the preparation of pupils for intelligent, helpful citizenship through the study of our country's history, its ideals, and institutions. History teaching worthy of the name no longer tolerates the mere recital of facts, dates, and names, or the answering of stereotyped questions at the end of the chapter. Rather, our teachers of history will draw from the events of the past their underlying significance; and they will relate the past to the present in such a way as to create in the minds of the pupils high ideals of American citizenship and of political conduct. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Republic: A History of the United States for Grammar Grades It is presumably the object of every author of such a book to show properly the trend of our country's devel opment - how colonies grew into States, and they in turn into a united nation; to show, furthermore, how the people have lived, how the methods of making a liveli hood have been changed by discoveries and inventions, producing new social conditions; and to set forth, in the course of such narrative, the acts of heroism and states manship that are conspicuous in our national biography. Presumably, too, school histories have been written to create an interest in the nation and the duties of citizen ship - to foster patriotism and a sense of civic duty; to fix standards of morality by a comparison of human deeds; and, lastly, to stimulate love of the study itself. These common ideals of the historian and the teacher are fundamental in the present book. But in offering to the schools of the United States a'new book on American history, the authors have considered also certain other conditions to be met.
