Book excerpt: This brief monograph is an in-depth study of the infinite divisibility and self-decomposability properties of central and noncentral Student’s distributions, represented as variance and mean-variance mixtures of multivariate Gaussian distributions with the reciprocal gamma mixing distribution. These results allow us to define and analyse Student-Lévy processes as Thorin subordinated Gaussian Lévy processes. A broad class of one-dimensional, strictly stationary diffusions with the Student’s t-marginal distribution are defined as the unique weak solution for the stochastic differential equation. Using the independently scattered random measures generated by the bi-variate centred Student-Lévy process, and stochastic integration theory, a univariate, strictly stationary process with the centred Student’s t- marginals and the arbitrary correlation structure are defined. As a promising direction for future work in constructing and analysing new multivariate Student-Lévy type processes, the notion of Lévy copulas and the related analogue of Sklar’s theorem are explained.

It begins with a brief introduction to the framework of stochastic processes followed by the thorough discussion on Markov chains, which is the simplest and the most important class of stochastic processes. The book then elaborates the theory of Markov chains in detail including classification of states, the first passage distribution, the concept of periodicity and the limiting behaviour of a Markov chain in terms of associated stationary and long run distributions. The book first illustrates the theory for some typical Markov chains, such as random walk, gambler's ruin problem, Ehrenfest model and Bienayme-Galton-Watson branching process; and then extends the discussion when time parameter is continuous. It presents some important examples of a continuous time Markov chain, which include Poisson process, birth process, death process, birth and death processes and their variations. These processes play a fundamental role in the theory and applications in queuing and inventory models, population growth, epidemiology and engineering systems. The book studies in detail the Poisson process, which is the most frequently applied stochastic process in a variety of fields, with its extension to a renewal process. The book also presents important basic concepts on Brownian motion process, a stochastic process of historic importance. The material is standard and classical for a first course in Stochastic Processes at the senior/graduate level (lessons 1-12). To provide students with a view of statistics of stochastic processes, three lessons (13-15) were added. These lessons can be either optional or serve as an introduction to statistical inference with dependent observations. Several points of this text need to be elaborated, (1) The pedagogy is somewhat obvious. Since this text is designed for a one semester course, each lesson can be covered in one week or so. Having in mind a mixed audience of students from different departments (Math ematics, Statistics, Economics, Engineering, etc.) we have presented the material in each lesson in the most simple way, with emphasis on moti vation of concepts, aspects of applications and computational procedures. Basically, we try to explain to beginners questions such as "What is the topic in this lesson?" "Why this topic?", "How to study this topic math ematically?". The exercises at the end of each lesson will deepen the stu dents' understanding of the material, and test their ability to carry out basic computations. Exercises with an asterisk are optional (difficult) and might not be suitable for homework, but should provide food for thought.

Originally included in previous editions, material too advanced for this first course in stochastic processes has been eliminated while treatment of other topics useful for applications has been expanded. In addition, the ordering of topics has been improved; for example, the difficult subject of martingales is delayed until its usefulness can be applied in the treatment of mathematical finance.
