Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For students interested in a career in politics and public service, Washington Internships is an invaluable guide to landing that crucial first position in America's capital. Deirdre Martinez, a former policy analyst and legislative director, shares practical strategies for each phase of the internship process. She has helped place hundreds of young people in internships of all kinds, and shares not just what to do but when to do it. The book shows how to develop relevant interests, what skills to develop, how to enhance the resume (poli sci course work not required!), and how to ace the interview. Just as important, it shows how to become a valued intern and build the relationships that lead to post-graduation job offers. Washington Internships also provides insider tips on dealing with grunt work, the pitfalls of "crossing the aisle," and how to find summer housing, deal with background checks, and negotiate Washington fashion ("zombie chic"). Washington Internships is the only career publication focused on entry-level policy and government work. It covers all branches of government, federal agencies, lobbying firms, advocacy organizations, and think tanks. Whether you're a young activist or a future power broker, this book will help you grab the first rung of the public service career ladder.

Book Storming Washington

Download or read book Storming Washington written by Stephen E. Frantzich and published by Amer Political Science Assn. This book was released on 1986 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This booklet provides information to help prepare undergraduate students for academic internships with the federal government. Most interns serve without pay; however, the opportunity to observe and participate in government provides important guidance for future decisions, and even potential employment opportunities. The student should do research on sponsors, be aware of the types of public policies each potential employer promotes and opposes, and become knowledgeable about ideologies and issues. Many sources are available for research, and the student should take advantage of these. When applying for an internship the student should use appropriate procedures for contacts, be able to sell himself or herself well to the sponsor, and tailor the resume to the particular position. Applicants may also enhance their chances by being flexible, specific, and realistic. The applicant must use specific criteria in making decisions about offers, and, once accepted, the intern must be aware of, and make others aware of, the learning and research goals and the responsibilities and expectations of the internship. The intern will play the role of participant observer, so techniques of keeping a journal, developing rapport with co-workers and sponsors, and forming and testing research hypotheses, must be developed; and intern must also know how to deal properly with ethical considerations such as propriety of tasks performed and confidentiality of information. Also, it is important that the intern follows proper procedures for ending the internship. Five appendices include a guide to academic internship programs in Washington; useful information on living in the city; a "potpourri" of political science resources and experiences in Washington; and information for the academic supervisor, including credit options and research assignments.
