Book Virtual Economies

Download or read book Virtual Economies written by Vili Lehdonvirta and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the basic concepts of economics—including markets, institutions, and money—can be used to create and analyze economies based on virtual goods. In the twenty-first-century digital world, virtual goods are sold for real money. Digital game players happily pay for avatars, power-ups, and other game items. But behind every virtual sale, there is a virtual economy, simple or complex. In this book, Vili Lehdonvirta and Edward Castronova introduce the basic concepts of economics into the game developer's and game designer's toolkits. Lehdonvirta and Castronova explain how the fundamentals of economics—markets, institutions, and money—can be used to create or analyze economies based on artificially scarce virtual goods. They focus on virtual economies in digital games, but also touch on serious digital currencies such as Bitcoin as well as virtual economies that emerge in social media around points, likes, and followers. The theoretical emphasis is on elementary microeconomic theory, with some discussion of behavioral economics, macroeconomics, sociology of consumption, and other social science theories relevant to economic behavior. Topics include the rational choice model of economic decision making; information goods versus virtual goods; supply, demand, and market equilibrium; monopoly power; setting prices; and externalities. The book will enable developers and designers to create and maintain successful virtual economies, introduce social scientists and policy makers to the power of virtual economies, and provide a useful guide to economic fundamentals for students in other disciplines.

Book Measuring the Unmeasurable in Education

Download or read book Measuring the Unmeasurable in Education written by Elaine Unterhalter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debates around quality versus quantity in education can generate controversy about how quality is measured. Many question the drive to delineate and quantify precisely what works, suggesting that much value either cannot be measured or is distorted by measurement. This book explores how we can understand measurement in areas of education policy, planning, and practice that have not previously been considered measurable. The contributors ask four main questions: What do we measure and not measure when we try to measure the unmeasurable in education? When attempts have been made to measure the unmeasurable in education, what metrics have been adopted in which contexts, and with what outcomes? Why have measures been adopted as indicators of the unmeasurable, such as human rights? And how have particular organisations approached the problem of measuring the apparently unmeasurable in education, with what epistemological, normative, and conceptual resources, and consequences? The book draws on analyses from philosophy, history, sociology, and economics, with insights from national and international contexts. The contributions consider philosophical distinctions, historical experiences, and contemporary reflections on how to refine existing approaches to measurement of poverty, capability, rights, and the benefits of education. The discussion shows how measuring the unmeasurable takes account of the inequalities, complexities and uncertainties of work in education, thus suggesting a considerable deepening of the notion of education quality and measurement. This book was originally published as a special issue of Comparative Education.

Book Teaching Good Learner Repertoires

Download or read book Teaching Good Learner Repertoires written by Steve Ward and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-08-03 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching Good Learner Repertoires is a "how to" book that will guide you to make your student easy to teach. Steve Ward, MA, BCBA and Terry Grimes, MS, BCBA bring decades of experience to this follow-up to the Inventory of Good Learner Repertoires. Good learner repertoires go well beyond typical "replacement" behaviors and most typically developing individuals acquire them with no formal teaching. Reading through the book you will quickly realize the staggering number of skills that we take for granted that may have to be specifically taught for learners to move forward academically and behaviorally. Teaching Good Learner Repertoires provides clear scripts for teaching these foundational skills, but also provides analyses, data recommendations, and "Dimension Grids", that will turn you into an analyst, capable of identifying the most relevant current priorities for your student, seeing where the instruction is going, and problem-solving how to get there.

Book Tradeoff Decisions in System Design

Download or read book Tradeoff Decisions in System Design written by A. Terry Bahill and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is about three key aspects of system design: decision making under uncertainty, trade-off studies and formal risk analyses. Recognizing that the mathematical treatment of these topics is similar, the authors generalize existing mathematical techniques to cover all three areas. Common to these topics are importance weights, combining functions, scoring functions, quantitative metrics, prioritization and sensitivity analyses. Furthermore, human decision-making activities and problems use these same tools. Therefore, these problems are also treated uniformly and modeled using prospect theory. Aimed at both engineering and business practitioners and students interested in systems engineering, risk analysis, operational management, and business process modeling, Tradeoff Decisions in System Design explains how humans can overcome cognitive biases and avoid mental errors when conducting trade-off studies and risk analyses in a wide range of domains. With generous use of examples as a common thread across chapters this book. “This book provides an excellent road map for designing and producing competitive products.”
