Book Relationships Between Student Attitudes Toward Computer assisted Instruction and Training Performance

Download or read book Relationships Between Student Attitudes Toward Computer assisted Instruction and Training Performance written by Bruce W. Knerr and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The attitudes of 90 enlisted personnel toward Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI) were measured before and after they received instruction presented by CAI. The attitude pretest and posttest were administered on line. The instructional material was divided into four lesson segments, each followed by a review (test) segment. Students who failed to reach the criterion score for any review segment repeated the corresponding lesson segment. A criterion test was administered at the end of the last segment. Measures of student performance used during the course of the instruction were: (a) the total score on the criterion test (total score); (b) the number of errors made during the lesson and review segments (errors); (c) the percentage of responses made during the lesson and review segments that were incorrect (percent errors); (d) the time required to complete the lesson and review segments (time); and (e) the number of review segments failed (review failures). The attitudes pretest did not correlate significantly with any of the performance measures. A significant correlation was obtained between attitude posttest and percent errors (r = -.22). Attitude change was correlated with total score (r = .28), errors (r = -.19), and percent errors (r = -.25). Attitude and attitude change were not related to student ability. (Author).

Book The Effects of Computer Assisted English Instruction on High School Preparatory Students Attitudes Towards Computers and English

Download or read book The Effects of Computer Assisted English Instruction on High School Preparatory Students Attitudes Towards Computers and English written by Alev Ates and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this research was to discern the effects of computer assisted English instruction on English language preparatory students' attitudes towards computers and English in a Turkish-medium high school with an intensive English program. A quasi-experimental time series research design, also called "before-after" or "repeated measures" design, was used in this research. As a sample, one group of students (20 female and 10 male) was randomly assigned. The research had two phases: traditional English instruction and computer assisted English instruction (CAEI). The instruments for data collection were a Scale for Attitudes Towards English and a Scale for Attitudes Towards Computers, which were given three times at intervals of two weeks. According to the findings, the students' scores of attitude towards computers and English after CAEI increased significantly. However, the correlations between the increases in the students' attitude scores, their gender, and their monthly income were found to be insignificant. This research design is advised for researchers to see the variation and trend of measurements, in particular contexts in time. (Contains 6 figures and 9 tables.) [Abstract provided in both English and Turkish.].

Book Attitudes towards Computers An investigation into the use of computers by teachers

Download or read book Attitudes towards Computers An investigation into the use of computers by teachers written by Ruchi Sachdeva and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2016 in the subject Pedagogy - Media Pedagogy, , language: English, abstract: Traditional or conventional teachers have a phobia of using technology like a fear of looking foolish, fear of asking for help, fear of not ‘catching on’ quickly enough, and fear of not being able to be effective with the technology in instructional settings. It is important to understand that these fears were self-imposed and self-generated, but very real nevertheless. Technology has an essential role to play in reducing the disparities that exist between the developed and developing countries. Computers are especially important in this context, because so many computer applications have a direct bearing on some of the main facets of the development process and reflect certain aspects of the technology that has facilitated the growth of the economically advanced countries. This study investigates the different attitudes towards computers and analyses them.

Book An Exploration of the Determinants of Attitude Toward Computers in Middle School Students

Download or read book An Exploration of the Determinants of Attitude Toward Computers in Middle School Students written by Earl Wayne Connell and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The educational world is belatedly rushing into the world of technology with relatively limited factual information concerning students' attitude toward computers. While most students have a positive attitude, research has indicated that the male is more positive than the female for various reasons. The purpose of this study was to investigate a diverse set of possible determinants of attitude toward computers including sex, ethnic background, learning style, and computer literacy. The subjects were 284 coeducational students from four ethnic backgrounds that attended three middle schools in San Diego. A requirement that subjects have two years of experience with computer assisted instruction made the sample population relatively sophisticated concerning computers. The methodology primarily involved the analysis of data by ANOVA and related procedures. Results of the quantitative analysis of data indicated that attitude toward computers was a complex phenomenon, with different aspects of cognitive skill as determinants. Furthermore, no simplistic generalization concerning attitude toward computers was truly applicable. Computer literacy had the strongest main effect. The analytic skill scale, the sequential processing skill scale, and the manipulative preference scale of the Learning Style Profile also had statistically significant main effects. Sex and ethnic background were not found to be determinants. The computer experience of the sample population was thought to have possibly been a factor in the outcome shifting the determinant of attitude from sex, found in earlier studies, to aspects of cognitive skill. The results of this research combined with earlier studies, indicated that attitude toward computers may be more site specific than generalizable. This characteristic increases the requirement for detailed local analysis prior to designing an effective computer assisted instruction program for a specific school.

Book The Effect of Computer Assisted and Computer Based Teaching Methods on Computer Course Success and Computer Using Attitudes of Students

Download or read book The Effect of Computer Assisted and Computer Based Teaching Methods on Computer Course Success and Computer Using Attitudes of Students written by Nilgun Tosun and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of the computer-assisted and computer-based instructional methods on students achievement at computer classes and on their attitudes towards using computers. The study, which was completed in 6 weeks, were carried out with 94 sophomores studying in formal education program of Primary Teaching Department of Education Faculty at Trakya University. The participants were distributed into experimental and control groups by pre-test post-test control group design. A computer attitude scale, a level-designation test and a practice test were used to collect the data. To evaluate the data, t test was used in the program of SPSS 12.00. According to the study results, the students receiving computer-assisted instruction during their computer classes showed higher success on the practice test than the students taking classes with computer-based instructional methods. Additionally, a considerable difference has not been seen in the attitude of the students towards using computers from the other standpoints of the study. (Contains 1 figure and 4 tables.) [Abstract included in Turkish.].

Book An Analysis and Comparison of the Effects of Computer assisted Instruction Versus Traditional Lecture Instruction on Student Attitudes and Achievement in a College Remedial Mathematics Course

Download or read book An Analysis and Comparison of the Effects of Computer assisted Instruction Versus Traditional Lecture Instruction on Student Attitudes and Achievement in a College Remedial Mathematics Course written by Marthea Bernadette Carter and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remedial mathematics courses are often taught at post-secondary institutions in response to the substantial number of students entering college who lack the skills and motivation necessary to be successful in college level mathematics courses. Much of the research on remedial mathematics instruction shows that it has been only moderately successful in improving the students' achievement in mathematics or their attitudes towards mathematics (Adelman, 1995; Burley, 1994; Wieschenberg, 1994). The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of web-based computer-assisted instruction (CAI) and traditional lecture-based instruction in a college remedial mathematics course. The remedial mathematics course was taught to two groups of college students, which included a treatment group that received CAI, and a control group that received traditional lecture instruction without the use of computers. The ALEKS (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces) web-based software program, was used in conjunction with lecture-based instruction for the treatment group. Mathematics achievement and student attitudes towards mathematics were assessed by means of pre- and post-tests administered at the beginning of the semester and again at the end of the semester. Student withdrawal rates and passing rates for the course were also compared for the two groups. The statistical analysis of the data compiled in this study included the use of paired and independent group t-tests, analysis of covariance, and z-tests. The paired t-test results showed that there were statistically significant achievement gains within the treatment and control groups as a result of the instruction that each group received. However the independent t-tests and the Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) revealed that there was no statistically significant difference in achievement gains between the two groups when the study ended. The paired t-test results on the attitude assessment showed no statistically significant difference within each group after the study was completed. In addition, the independent t-tests and the ANCOVA results showed no significant change in attitudes between the two groups when the experiment had been completed. The z-test analyses also showed no significant difference in the withdrawal or passing rates between the treatment and control groups.

Book Computer assisted Instruction in an Urban School Setting

Download or read book Computer assisted Instruction in an Urban School Setting written by Leanne Howell and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation study was to investigate a specific computer-assisted instructional software, Study Hall 101, in fifth-grade science. The study was conducted on an urban, elementary school campus in a northeastern school district in Texas. A mixed-methods approach was utilized in an attempt to understand two teachers' perceptions about its use in fifth-grade science and evaluate its impact on fifth-grade students' attitudes toward science. The first inquiry employed a qualitative research design in an attempt to understand teachers' perceptions towards the use of Study Hall 101. Data collection methods used in this study included interviews, focus groups, and electronic-mail (e-mail) responses to open-ended sentence stems. Four favorable themes emerged from teachers' responses: (1) students' attitudes toward science, (2) students' participation in science class discussions, (3) content individualization, and (4) students' engagement. Teachers' frustrations also emerged into themes: (1) time constraints, (2) technology glitches, and (3) specific design elements. The second inquiry employed a quantitative research design in an attempt to investigate the impact of Study Hall 101 on seventy fifth-grade students' attitudes toward science after an eight-week period. The Modified Attitudes Toward Science Inventory (mATSI) was used for data collection and was administered to students on two occasions, before and after treatment. Results indicated no statistically significant change in fifth-grade students' overall attitudes toward science as a result of its use; however, two statistically significant findings did occur when data were analyzed across attribute variables of gender, ethnicity, and economic status, as well as specific domains within the mATSI. First, the use of Study Hall 101 was associated with males' and females' attitudes in opposite ways in regard to one domain of the mATSI: self-concept toward science. Second, students in the control group experienced a decline in another attitude domain of the mATSI: desire to do science. The results of this study contribute to the field of K-12 education as we search for effective educational tools to reach diverse student populations. This study concludes that teachers' perceptions of this software are favorable and that its use in fifth-grade science should be considered as a tool to engage students in their own learning process.
