Book The Gypsy Economist

Download or read book The Gypsy Economist written by Alex Millmow and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first intellectual biography of the Anglo Australian economist, Colin Clark. Despite taking the economics world by storm with a mercurial ability for statistical analysis, Clark’s work has been largely overlooked in the 30 years since his death. His career was punctuated by a number of firsts. He was the first economist to derive the concept of GNP, the first to broach development economics and to foresee the re-emergence of India and China within the global economy. In 1945, he predicted the rise and persistence of inflation when taxation levels exceeded 25 per cent of GNP. And he was also the first economist to debunk post-war predictions of mass hunger by arguing that rapid population growth engendered economic development. Clark wandered through the fields of applied economics in much the same way as he rambled through the English countryside and the Australian bush. His imaginative wanderings qualify him as the eminent gypsy economist for the 20th century.

Book excerpt: Trade is the dominant subject in nineteenth century economics. During the course of the century, Britain was transformed from a protectionist power to an open economy, a change embodied by the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846. This is reflected in the economic literature of the period, with the qualified free trade advocacy of the early classical economists developing into more strident views of the Manchester School. However throughout the period free trade did not go unchallenged, and by the end of the century a fully developed protectionist position had emerged represented by, for example, the economic nationalism of Henry Carey in the United States and in the fair trade movement in Britain. This volume is a collection of materials relating to the major nineteenth century debates about external trade. It includes some extremely rare but representative pieces from less well-known names. The collection includes an original introduction by the editor, and each of the individual pieces has been carefully retypeset. The set includes material by: James Mill, Richard Cobden, Robert Torrens, John Ramsey McCulloch, Freidrich List, Henry Carey and M. Frederick Bastiet.

Book Reconstructing the Global Political Economy

Download or read book Reconstructing the Global Political Economy written by Andersson, Erik and published by Bristol University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-20 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era of post-globalisation, the global political economy needs restructuring. This future-orientated textbook examines the challenges facing the world economy as a result of climate change, social and economic inequality and provides future-oriented solutions. Andersson clearly presents and explains key concepts from Global Political Economy (GPE) to show how these can be used to design and analyse potential reconstructions of the global political economy, offering the analytical tools and inroads to this reconstruction. With a comprehensive exploration of the different ideological pathways that change might take, through intersecting dimensions of gender, race and class, the author expertly guides the reader through thematic chapters such as: • The political economy of everyday life • Regulation of global trade • Post-development • Global value chain production • Financial markets This textbook will help students and non-specialist readers to see that global economic change is possible and show how core concepts from GPE can enable clear thinking about a global future that is environmentally, socially and economically sustainable.
