Book excerpt: The fascinating story of the so-called "Prayer Book Rebellion" of 1549 which saw the people of Devon and Cornwall rise up against the Crown The Western Rising of 1549 was the most catastrophic event to occur in Devon and Cornwall between the Black Death and the Civil War. Beginning as an argument between two men and their vicar, the rebellion led to a siege of Exeter, savage battles with Crown forces, and the deaths of 4,000 local men and women. It represents the most determined attempt by ordinary English people to halt the religious reformation of the Tudor period. Mark Stoyle tells the story of the so-called "Prayer Book Rebellion" in full. Correcting the accepted narrative in a number of places, Stoyle shows that the government in London saw the rebels as a real threat. He demonstrates the importance of regional identity and emphasizes that religion was at the heart of the uprising. This definitive account brings to life the stories of the thousands of men and women who acted to defend their faith almost five hundred years ago.

Book Looting in Wartime Britain

Download or read book Looting in Wartime Britain written by Todd Gray and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new fascinating book will have broad national appeal to anyone with an interest in wartime, social or local history. Scholarly but readable.Looting took Britain by surprise in the summer of 1940 and it continued throughout the war. The shock was replaced by anger and outrage as looting accompanied the German bombing of cities across the country. It intensified as many looters were revealed to be in positions of trust. Todd Gray uncovers diverse reasons for why it took place and with careful research provides evidence to support this uncomfortable aspect of the past. It is part of our history that hurts but to ignore it is to diminish a generation's struggle against fascism.

Book William Birchynshaw s Map of Exeter 1743

Download or read book William Birchynshaw s Map of Exeter 1743 written by Richard Oliver and published by Devon and Cornwall Record Soci. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major re-examination of the history of map-making in Exeter, following on from the recent discovery of a 'new' town map of the city in 1743 This major re-examination of the history of map-making in Exeter, the historic county town of Devon, follows from the recent discovery of a 'new' Georgian town map of the city. That map, by William Birchynshaw (a man not known tohave produced any other), is reproduced in facsimile, along with nearly two dozen other maps from 1587 through to 1949. They are prefaced by an introduction which places the new discovery within the context of four centuries of map-making, demonstrating how Birchynshaw owed a debt both to John Hooker's map of 1587 and to that by Ichabod Fairlove of 1709; and provides an overview of Exeter in 1743, showing that, although was city was basking in economic prosperity due to its cloth trade, it was also still largely confined within its ancient walls. The volume as a whole represents a significant reassessment of Exeter's history. RICHARD OLIVER is a historian and has been a Research Fellow in the History of Cartography at the University of Exeter since 1989. ROGER KAIN CBE is a Fellow of the British Academy and its Vice-President (Research and Higher Education Policy). He is Professor of Humanities in the School of Advanced Study, University of London and was previously its Dean and Chief Executive, 2010-17. TODD GRAY MBE is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Exeter and the author of more thana dozen books on Exeter.

Book Early Stuart Mariners and Shipping

Download or read book Early Stuart Mariners and Shipping written by Todd Gray and published by Devon & Cornwall Record Society. This book was released on 1990 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains all the surviving early-Stuart surveys of Mariners and Shipping for Devon and Cornwall, including a hitherto unknown one of south Devon discovered in the Pepys Library at Magdalene College Cambridge. From parish to parish, all along the coasts of the two counties and in some cases far inland, the seafaring population is delineated. There are about 6000 names in all, a source for social and maritime historians and especially valuable for family historians in the two counties. Nearly unique in its time as an 'occupation census', the information provides rare glimpses into local life. Included in the Introduction is an analysis of contemporary ships' names.
