Book Structure and Reactivity Within Ultrathin Molecular Films

Download or read book Structure and Reactivity Within Ultrathin Molecular Films written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new technique based on the nonlinear optical phenomenon - second harmonic generation - has been developed for probing the structure of nano- to micrometer thickness thin films made of small and medium size organic molecules. It was found that the magnitude of the inter-molecular interaction plays a critical role in determining the growth mechanism, structure, crystallization kinetics, and phase transitions of the thin molecular films. The nonlinear optical technique can even allow the determination of the orientation and alignment of the molecules at the interface between the thin film and the substrate. Order of the molecules in the interfacial layer affects the crystallization mechanism in the thin film.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This five-volume handbook focuses on processing techniques, characterization methods, and physical properties of thin films (thin layers of insulating, conducting, or semiconductor material). The editor has composed five separate, thematic volumes on thin films of metals, semimetals, glasses, ceramics, alloys, organics, diamonds, graphites, porous materials, noncrystalline solids, supramolecules, polymers, copolymers, biopolymers, composites, blends, activated carbons, intermetallics, chalcogenides, dyes, pigments, nanostructured materials, biomaterials, inorganic/polymer composites, organoceramics, metallocenes, disordered systems, liquid crystals, quasicrystals, and layered structures. Thin films is a field of the utmost importance in today's materials science, electrical engineering and applied solid state physics; with both research and industrial applications in microelectronics, computer manufacturing, and physical devices. Advanced, high-performance computers, high-definition TV, digital camcorders, sensitive broadband imaging systems, flat-panel displays, robotic systems, and medical electronics and diagnostics are but a few examples of miniaturized device technologies that depend the utilization of thin film materials. The Handbook of Thin Films Materials is a comprehensive reference focusing on processing techniques, characterization methods, and physical properties of these thin film materials.

Book The Physics of Structural Phase Transitions

Download or read book The Physics of Structural Phase Transitions written by Minoru Fujimoto and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-09-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase transitions in which crystalline solids undergo structural changes present an interesting problem in the interplay between the crystal structure and the ordering process. This text, intended for readers with some prior knowledge of condensed-matter physics, emphasizes the basic physics behind such spontaneous structural changes in crystals. Starting with the relevant thermodynamic principles, the book discusses the nature of order variables and their collective motion in a crystal lattice; in a structural phase transition a singularity in such a collective mode is responsible for the lattice instability, as revealed by soft phonons. This mechanism is analogous to the interplay of a charge-density wave and a periodically deformed lattice in low-dimensional conductors. The text also describes experimental methods for modulated crystal structures and gives examples of structural changes in representative systems. The book is divided into two parts. The first, theoretical, part includes such topics as: the Landau theory of phase transitions; statistics, correlations and the mean-field approximation; pseudospins and their collective modes; soft lattice modes and pseudospin condensates; lattice imperfections and their role in the phase transitions of real crystals. The second part discusses experimental studies of modulated crystals using x-ray diffraction, neutron inelastic scattering, light scattering, dielectric measurements, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Book Structural Design and Photochemical Preparation of Ultrathin Molecular Film Materials

Download or read book Structural Design and Photochemical Preparation of Ultrathin Molecular Film Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toward the goal of developing fundamental understanding of structural properties of molecular thin films to form a scientific basis for designing and preparation of molecular thin film materials, we have made important advances during the past three years. These advances were enabled through applying a combination of ultrahigh vacuum surface science and nonlinear optical techniques to the characterization of thin molecular films. Specifically we have demonstrated for the first time that the nonlinear optical technique Second Harmonic Generation can be used to determine the geometric structure of the interfacial layer of molecules buried in between the molecular film and the solid substrate, and that surface-state enhanced SHG can be used to probe the wetting-dewetting transition of monolayer molecular adsorbates on a metal. The nature of bonding between the layer of linear acenes, molecules such as tetracene and pentacene that have great potential as organic semiconducting materials, have been determined. Overall, we have gained to great extend a fundamental understanding of molecular film deposition, growth, and crystallization mechanisms. This research effort has resulted in a total of 13 referred publications since 2004 to date (listed at the end of the report). A more detailed description of research results are presented below.

Book Phase Transitions in Surface Films 2

Download or read book Phase Transitions in Surface Films 2 written by H. Taub and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Study Institute (AS I) entitled "Phase Transitions in Surface Films" was held at the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice, Sicily from June 19 to June 29, 1990. It reviewed the present understanding (experimental and theoretical) of phase transitions of surfaces, interfaces, and thin ftlms as well as the related structural and dynamical properties of these systems. From its inception, this ASI was envisioned as a sequel to one of the same title organized eleven years earlier by J. G. Dash and J. Ruvalds which was also held at the Ettore Majorana Centre. The previous ASI reflected the progress which had been made in understanding quasi two-dimensional (2D) states of matter, particularly adsorbed monolayers, and the phase transitions which occur in them. At that time, the field was barely ten years old. The modern field to which we are referring here can be traced to the landmark experiments of A. Thorny and X. Duval. Beginning in 1967, they published a series of papers presenting evidence from vapor pressure measurements of 2D phases of krypton and other gases adsorbed on polycrystalline (exfoliated) graphite. Their work led to a large number of thermodynamic and scattering experiments on physisorbed ftlms. This in turn motivated a great deal of theoretical interest in 2D systems and their phase transitions.
