Book Structure of Employment in Rural India

Download or read book Structure of Employment in Rural India written by A Amarender A. Reddy and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In India, agriculture contributes to 67.9% of employment but it only contributes to 38.34% of rural GDP and about 12% to Indias GDP. It shows that even though structural transformation in GDP taken place rapidly, transformation in employment is very slow especially in rural areas. Keeping this, the paper examined labor market behavior in the 18 selected villages of India, with the following objectives (i) To assess the structure of work status among sample individuals, (ii) To test for segmented labor market theory. The paper uses high frequency data and measured weekly hours spent on both economic and non-economic activities for the year 2010. The paper uses simple regression techniques and estimated modified Mincer equation to determine earnings, followed by application of multinomial regression analysis to know test segmented labor markets. Still labor participation in rural India is very low with only 36.2 hours/week by men and 23.1 hours/week by women. Hours spent in non-farm activities which fetch higher wages are still limited especially among women. To some extent, the labor markets are segmented based on social background and supports segmented labor market theory based on caste, gender and assets. Results revealed that the labor markets are highly segmented based on gender. Still, individuals with land, irrigation facilities, other physical assets and belongs to upper castes are having advantage in rural labor markets. Importance of education in rural labor markets is very limited and only confine to salaried jobs which are very meager, as a result there is high unemployment among educated youth both men and women. However, parents investing heavily in education of their children with hope of getting urban employment. Illiterate women and men loaded with more hours of work in low productive paid-work and also domestic work. Some of the policy prescriptions from the study are (i) enhancing the ownership of assets like land, irrigated area through providing loans which will increase hours worked in economic activities (ii) imbibing savings habit which generally increase labor force participation rate, (iii) enhancing quality education in rural areas beyond the higher-secondary to take advantage of growing employment in salaried jobs and new emerging occupations like repair of mobiles, electric motors computer centres (iv) imparting skill development in both caste occupations and also in modern sectors and (v) balanced development of both urban and rural areas through promotion of small towns.

Book Contemporary Demographic Transformations in China India and Indonesia

Download or read book Contemporary Demographic Transformations in China India and Indonesia written by Christophe Z. Guilmoto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-12 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the profound demographic transformation affecting China, India, and Indonesia, where 40% of the world's people live. It offers a systematic, comparative approach that will help readers to better understand the changing social and regional recomposition of the population in these regions. The chapters present a detailed investigation and mapping of regional trends in mortality, fertility, migration and urbanization, education, and aging. Throughout, the analysis carefully considers how these trends affect economic and social development. Coverage also raises global, theoretical questions about the singular ways in which each of these three countries have achieved their demographic transition. As the authors reveal, demographic trends seem to be somewhat linear and anticipatable, providing Asia’s three demographic giants and their governments a formidable advantage in planning for the future. But the evolution of human mobility in China, India, and Indonesia, closely intertwined as it is with changing economic conditions, appears less predictable and ranks high among the major challenges to demographic knowledge in the coming decades. Offering an insightful look into the components, implications, and regional variations of a changing population, this book will appeal to social scientists, demographers, anthropologists, sociologists, epidemiologists, and specialists in Asian studies.

Book Socio Economic Change and the Broad Basing Process in India

Download or read book Socio Economic Change and the Broad Basing Process in India written by M. V. Nadkarni and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new concept of inclusion of the marginalised in India — the Broad-basing Process. The author examines how through this process increasing numbers of marginalised social groups can enter into the social, political and economic mainstream and progressively derive the same advantages from society as the groups already part of it. The book critically reviews how the broad-basing process has worked in the past in India both before and after its independence. It examines how social groups like Dalits, OBCs, Muslims, women and the labour class have fared, and how far economic development, urbanisation, infrastructure development and the digital revolution have helped the marginalised and promoted broad-basing. It also offers mechanisms to speed up broad-basing in poorer economies. A first of its kind, this volume will be useful for scholars and researchers of political studies, sociology, exclusion studies, political economy and also for general readers.
