All those who knew him personally and among them the participants in the previous Jerusalem Symposia will remember for ever the exceptional qualities of the scientist and the unusual human warmth of the man. With Ernst D. Bergmann the state of Israel lost one of the founders of its Science and one of its most brilliant and renowned representatives. The spirit which he suc ceeded to inoculate into his numerous disciples and pupils will, however, continue to perpetuate his name and his work. The Jerusalem Symposia will continue as a living testimony to his brilliant inspiration. Before dying, Professor Bergmann has prepared a few opening remarks for the 8th Jerusalem Symposium. This is particularly true of modern biology which is becoming more and more of an interdisciplinary field. The present situation in cell biology clearly reflects this devel opment and demonstrates that the application of physical techniques was necessary before this field of biological research could be developed on an objective and quantitative basis. The utilization of optical phenomena as measuring parameters at the microscopic level has provided the basis for the development of quantitative cytochemistry. This rapidly growing extension of conventional cytochemistry and histochemistry is based on the visual oberservation of qualitative chemical criteria in correlation with the microscopically resolved structure of cells and tissues. Furthermore, the introduction into cytochemistry of such optical measuring techniques as ab sorption photometry, interferometry, and fluorometry, as well as the measurement of optical anisotropy, diffrac:tion and scattered light, has provided the methodological bridge for the ex change of knowledge between cell biology on the one hand and biochemistry, or molecular biology, on the other.

Book excerpt: The Second International Congress on Photosynthesis Research took place in Stresa, Italy during June 24-29, 1971; two centuries after the discovery of Photosynthesis by Joseph Priestley in 1771. This important anniversary was celebrated at the Congress by a learned account of Priestley's life and fundamental discoveries given by Professor Robin HILL, F. R. S. Professor HILL's lecture opens the first of the three volumes which contains the contributions presented at the Congress. The manuscripts have been distributed into three volumes. Volume I con tains contributions in the areas of primary reactions and electron transport; Volume II ion transport and photophosphorylation, and Volume III carbon assimilation, regulatory phenomena, developmental aspects, and from the two special sessions of the Congress devoted to evolution and photorespiration. It is realized that this division is necessarily somewhat arbitrary since many contributions relate to more than one of the above mentioned titles. However, the large number of contributions (over 3000 typed pages) made it impossible to publish the proceedings in less than three volumes. The printing of these volumes and the organization of the Congress were made possible by a contribution from the Consigio Nazionale delle Ricerche of Italy. Book excerpt: On the day after the 1959 Cambridge Congress, during which the International Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics was founded, a biophysics section was formed within the Society of Physical Chemistry (Societe de Chimie Physique). Since then, three of the Society's annual meetings (the 11th, 17th, and 23rd) were devoted exclusively to the physico-chemical study of biological systems. The first of these was held in June 1961 at a hotel in Col de Voza, at the foot of an alpine glacier above Chamonix. The second, in May 1967, took place in the more learned setting of the venerable rooms of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. The third - the one dealt with in the present volume - was recently held at Orleans-La Source in the newly built lecture theatres of the young University, which is near the great Institutes of the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), on the Sologne plateau. These three stages are milestones of an evolution which characterises (at least schematically) the explosive evolution of biological physico-chemistry. The first colloquium, with the title 'Deoxyribonucleic Acid: Structure, Synthesis and Functions', actually marks the first contact of the physical chemist with one of the then most prestigious biological macromolecules, the structure of which had just been discovered, and in this way celebrated one of the first and most striking successes of molecular biology.
