  • Pages : 171 pages

Download or read book Transforming Glycoscience written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-10-23 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new focus on glycoscience, a field that explores the structures and functions of sugars, promises great advances in areas as diverse as medicine, energy generation, and materials science, this report finds. Glycans-also known as carbohydrates, saccharides, or simply as sugars-play central roles in many biological processes and have properties useful in an array of applications. However, glycans have received little attention from the research community due to a lack of tools to probe their often complex structures and properties. Transforming Glycoscience: A Roadmap for the Future presents a roadmap for transforming glycoscience from a field dominated by specialists to a widely studied and integrated discipline, which could lead to a more complete understanding of glycans and help solve key challenges in diverse fields.

Book Computer Assisted Modeling

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 1987-02-01
  • ISBN : 0309062284
  • Pages : 186 pages

Download or read book Computer Assisted Modeling written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1987-02-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In much of biology, the search for understanding the relation between structure and function is now taking place at the macromolecular level. Proteins, nucleic acids, and polysaccharides are macromolecule--polymers formed from families of simpler subunits. Because of their size and complexity, the polymers are capable of both inter- and intramolecular interactions. These interactions confer upon the polymers distinctive three-dimensional shapes. These tertiary configurations, in turn, determine the function of the macromolecule. Computers have become so inextricably involved in empirical studies of three-dimensional macromolecular structure that mathematical modeling, or theory, and experimental approaches are interrelated aspects of a single enterprise.

Book Glycoconjugate Research

Download or read book Glycoconjugate Research written by John Gregory and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glycoconjugate Research, Volume I contains the proceedings of the Fourth International Symposium on Glycoconjugates, held in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, in September 1977. Contributors focus on the state of knowledge in the field of glycoconjugates ranging from polysaccharides and glycoproteins to glycolipids, proteoglycans, and all their varieties in plants, animals, and microorganisms. This text is organized into three sections and consists of 87 chapters. After an introductory chapter where the use of glycosidases for the structural analysis of complex carbohydrates is described, the discussion turns to other methods used for elucidating the structure of complex carbohydrates. The chapters that follow focus on the primary structure and conformation of glycans that are N-glycosically linked to peptide chains; isolation of monofuco-disialoganglioside from human and bovine brains; and partial chemical characterization of activated peptides isolated from a single cell suspension of rat colonic secretory cells. The last two sections explore cartilage proteoglycans and the structure-function relationships of glycoconjugates, touching on topics such as link proteins; the biochemical aspects of malignancy in human chondrosarcomas; defensive response of plants to a microbial oligosaccharide with a pheromone-like activity; and the interaction of saccharides with ricin. This book is intended for students and practitioners of chemistry and biochemistry; biology and microbiology; and physiology.

Download or read book Connective Tissues written by R. Fricke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: connective tissues are essential for the physical functioning of the animals's body. The condition of the various connective tissues is governed by biochemical factors, anabolism and catabolism, that are controlled by specific enzymes. Any change outside the normal range of metabolism, for instance induced by immunological reactions, may induce a pathological disturbance. The result can be acute or chronic inflammation, or loss of normal function, expressed in loosening, dilatation, breaking, wear, stiffness, shrinking, scars, stenosis, and cirrhosis or any other kind of fibrosis. A first step toward improving our understanding of the feedback mecha nism that maintains the biological status and texture of a given connective tissue is to combine what is known about synthesis and enzymatic degradation of the components of fibers and ground substance. Common pathological phenomena like chronic inflammation of immune reactions can be either the result of the cause of disturbances in the sensitive balance of connective tissue metabolism. Nowadays con nective tissues are less and less regarded as brady trophic tissue but rather as a stimulating and many-sided problem of research. Before we can understand the pathogenesis of the connective tissue diseases that result in the destructive processes mentioned above, basic research will be necessary. This research will be furthered by a constant exchange of information and the results of· observations. To promote this exchange of information between scientists, symposia on connective tissue research are organized at regular intervals.
