Book Structure and Dynamics of the Benthic Boundary Layer Above the Hatteras Abyssal Plain

Download or read book Structure and Dynamics of the Benthic Boundary Layer Above the Hatteras Abyssal Plain written by Eric Arthur D'Asaro and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 1158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structure of the near-bottom velocity and density fields was observed for 3 months with a fixed velocity/temperature measuring array on the Hatteras Abyssal Plain. The velocity signal was examined for structure coherent with the observed mixed layers. Velocity fluctuations above 1 cph increase in energy near the bottom, especially within bottom mixed layers. The frequency and energy of these fluctuations is consistent with the expected properties of boundary layer turbulence. The turbulence as measured by these velocity fluctuations, is modulated on tidal and inertial time scales and extends intermittently throughout the bottom mixed layer. The clockwise near inertial velocity fluctuations, presumably due to internal waves, also show structure coherent with the observed mixed layers. Their energy decreases near the top of the mixed layer with little phase change. Within the mixed layer the phase begins to lead, with the phase increasing downward. The near inertial anticlockwise velocity fluctuations show far less coherence with the mixed layer structure; higher frequency internal wave band velocity fluctuations show very little coherence with the mixed layer structure. The characteristic boundary layer velocity signal in both the high frequency and near inertial bands commonly extends throughout the mixed layer, often significantly above the estimated turbulent Ekman layer height. These observations are inconsistent with a steady turbulent Ekman layer model of the boundary layer. (Author).

Book The Dynamics of the Bottom Boundary Layer of the Deep Ocean

Download or read book The Dynamics of the Bottom Boundary Layer of the Deep Ocean written by Laurence Armi and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Profiles of salinity and temperature from the center of the Hatteras Abyssal Plain have a signature that is characteristic of mixing up a uniformly stratified region: a well-mixed layer above the bottom, bounded by an interface. The penetration height of the mixed-layer varies from about 10 m to 100 m and has been correlated by Armi and Millard (1976) with the one day mean velocity, inferred from current meters located above the bottom boundary layer. Here the dynamics of such layers is discussed. A model of entrainment and mixing for a flat bottom boundary layer is outlined; this model is however incomplete because too little is known of the structure of turbulence above an ekman layer.

Download or read book The Benthic Boundary Layer Experiment on the Hatteras Abyssal Plain Current and Temperature Observations Data Report 1977 written by A. Spencer and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The near bottom density and velocity fields above the Hatteras abyssal plain were observed with a current/temperature measuring array and a towed-yo-yoing profiler. This report describes the array data and includes details of calibration and data quality. Sources of direction error were diagnosed from vane and compass performance and bearing direction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conference on the Benthic Boundary Layer was held under the auspices of the NATO Science Committee as part of its continuing effort to promote the useful progress of science through international cooperation. Science Committee Conferences are deliberately designed to focus attention on unsolved problems, with carefully selected participants invited to provide complementary expertise from a variety of relevant disciplines. Through inten sive discussion in small groups they seek to reach a consensus on assessments and recommendations for future research emphasis, which it is hoped will be of value to the larger scientific community. The subjects treated over the past few years have been as varied as science itself-e.g., computer software engineering, chemical catalysis, and materials and energy research. The present effort evolved from informal discussions between marine geolo gists, chemists, and biologists which underlined the desirability of improved communication among those concerned with the benthic layer. In both scien tific and technological terms this is an exciting frontier, rich in promise but poorly understood at present. It is particularly striking to realize that there are at least as many definitions of the benthic layer as there are disciplines involved, and it seemed clear that there was much to be gained by a detailed exchange of views on research capabilities, trends, and priorities. The results of the meeting appear to have confirmed the hopes of the sponsors.

Book Marine Geology and Oceanography of the Pacific Manganese Nodule Province

Download or read book Marine Geology and Oceanography of the Pacific Manganese Nodule Province written by James L. Bischoff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 839 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep-sea manganese nodules, once an obscure scientific curios ity, have, in the brief span of two decades, become a potential mineral resource of major importance. Nodules that cover the sea floor of the tropical North Pacific may represent a vast ore de posit of manganese, nickel, cobalt, and copper. Modern technology has apparently surmounted the incredible problem of recovering nodules in water depths of 5000 meters and the extraction of metals from the complex chemical nodule matrix is a reality. Both the recovery and the extraction appear to be economically feasible. Exploitation of this resource is, however, hindered more by the lack of an international legal structure allowing for recognition of mining sites and exploitation rights, than by any other factor. Often, when a mineral deposit becomes identified as an ex ploitable resource, scientific study burgeons. Interest in the nature and genesis of the deposit increases and much is learned from large scale exploration. The case is self evident for petrol eum and ore deposits on land. The study of manganese nodules is just now entering this phase. What was the esoteric field of a few scientists has become the subject of active exploration and research by most of the industrialized nations. Unfortunately for our general understanding of manganese nodules, exploration results remain largely proprietary. However, scientific study has greatly increased and the results are becoming widely available.
