  • Pages : 818 pages

Download or read book Galactic Astronomy written by James Binney and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the definitive treatment of the phenomenology of galaxies--a clear and comprehensive volume that takes full account of the extraordinary recent advances in the field. The book supersedes the classic text Galactic Astronomy that James Binney wrote with Dimitri Mihalas, and complements Galactic Dynamics by Binney and Scott Tremaine. It will be invaluable to researchers and is accessible to any student who has a background in undergraduate physics. The book draws on observations both of our own galaxy, the Milky Way, and of external galaxies. The two sources are complementary, since the former tends to be highly detailed but difficult to interpret, while the latter is typically poorer in quality but conceptually simpler to understand. Binney and Merrifield introduce all astronomical concepts necessary to understand the properties of galaxies, including coordinate systems, magnitudes and colors, the phenomenology of stars, the theory of stellar and chemical evolution, and the measurement of astronomical distances. The book's core covers the phenomenology of external galaxies, star clusters in the Milky Way, the interstellar media of external galaxies, gas in the Milky Way, the structure and kinematics of the stellar components of the Milky Way, and the kinematics of external galaxies. Throughout, the book emphasizes the observational basis for current understanding of galactic astronomy, with references to the original literature. Offering both new information and a comprehensive view of its subject, it will be an indispensable source for professionals, as well as for graduate students and advanced undergraduates.

New observations from ground- and space-based telescopes, the discovery of dark matter, and powerful computer simulations have been instrumental in this. This textbook provides graduate students with a complete and thorough introduction to galactic dynamics. The first two parts of the book define the astrophysical problems and the methods for building sound physical models. Next, the observational properties and models of spiral then elliptical galaxies are examined in detail. Finally, a selection of exciting topics from contemporary research are introduced, including the formation and evolution of galaxies, cooling flows, accretion disks, and galaxies at high redshift. Throughout, the emphasis is on developing a clear understanding and good physical intuition of the processes involved. Full derivations are provided for key results and helpful problems are included. This textbook provides graduate students with a self-contained and accessible introduction to modern galactic dynamics.

Book Structure and Dynamics of Elliptical Galaxies

Download or read book Structure and Dynamics of Elliptical Galaxies written by Tim de Zeeuw and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IAU Symposium 127 was held in Princeton on May 28-31, 1986, at the Institute for Advanced Study. There were 150 participants from 19 countries. This was the first IAU Symposium devoted exclusively to elliptical galaxies. The last decade has been a period of exceptionally rapid progress regard ing our understanding of elliptical galaxies, driven on the observational side by a wealth of new photometric and spectroscopic data, and on the theoretical side by the recognition that ellipticals are slowly rotating triaxial systems, instead of rotationally flattened bodies. The 30 invited speakers reviewed all aspects of this progress, its consequences, and the major outstanding problems. Nearly 80 poster contributions were displayed for the duration of the meeting. These contained many of the most recent developments. The first part of these Proceedings contains the written versions of the invited reviews and the summary, in the order of their presentation. The accompanying discussions are based on the written versions of questions and answers as handed in by the participants. The second part of this book is devoted to the poster contribu tions. They have been grouped in a thematic order, proceeding from morphology to theory. Indices of objects, subjects, and names are provided. Unfortunately, none of the invited participants from the USSR were able to attend the Symposium. The Proceedings include the written versions of the planned contributions by Popov and Polyachenko.

Book Dynamics and Interactions of Galaxies

Download or read book Dynamics and Interactions of Galaxies written by Roland Wielen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress towards an understanding of the dynamics and interactions of galaxies has been spurred on more than ever by a wealth of new observations and numerical experiments. The Heidelberg Conference 1989, the papers of which are collected in this volume, was extremely successful in presenting a synoptic view of the field in all its aspects: galaxy interactions in the early universe and in recent times, interactions of our galaxy and its neighbours, dynamical problems of elliptical and disk galaxies, groups and clusters, starburst and nuclear activity triggered by interactions, merger scenarios, and numerical experiments. Researchers and graduate students, specialists or not, will find here a complete overview of a rapidly growing field of astronomy.

Book Computer Experiments on the Structure and Dynamics of Spiral Galaxies

Download or read book Computer Experiments on the Structure and Dynamics of Spiral Galaxies written by Frank Hohl and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of an initially balanced rotating disk of stars with an initial velocity dispersion given by Toomre's local criterion was investigated by means of a computer model for isolated disks of stars. It was found that the disk is unstable against very large scale modes. A stable axisymmetric disk with a velocity dispersion much larger than that given by Toomre's criterion was generated. The final mass distribution for the disk gives a high density central core and a disk population of stars that is closely approximated by an exponential variation. Various methods and rates of cooling the hot axisymmetric disks were investigated. It was found that the cooling resulted in the development of two-arm spiral structures which persisted as long as cooling continued. An experiment was performed to induce spiral structure in a galaxy by means of the close passage of a companion galaxy. Parameters similar to those expected for M51 and its companion were used. It was found that because of the high velocity dispersion of the disturbed disk galaxy, only a weak two-arm spiral structure appeared. The evolution of a uniformly rotating disk galaxy which is a stationary solution of the collisionless Boltzmann equation was investigated for various values of the initial rms velocity dispersion. It was found that the disk becomes stable at a value of the velocity dispersion predicted by theory.

Book Structure and Dynamics of Interacting Galaxies

Download or read book Structure and Dynamics of Interacting Galaxies written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the ``merger hypothesis'', elliptical galaxies form by mergers of spiral galaxies. To test this hypothesis, simulations of collisionless mergers between disk galaxies with different mass ratios and orbital geometries were performed. Every merger remnant was investigated with respect to its photometric and kinematic properties. The methods used to determine the characteristic properties were developed to resemble the methods used by observational astronomers. Therefore a self-consistent comparison between simulated data and observations was possible. 1:1 merger remnants are triaxial, rotate slowly, are supported by anisotropic velocity dispersions, have significant minor-axis rotation and show predominantly boxy iosphotes in good agreement with observations of bright, boxy, giant elliptical galaxies. 3:1 and 4:1 remnants are oblate isoptropic, fast rotators, show a small amount of minor-axis rotation and have disky isophotes in perfect agreement with observations of faint, disky, giant elliptical galaxies. 2:1 remnants show intermediate properties. Projection effects lead to a large spread in the data in good agreement with observations. They do not change the fundamental differences between 1:1 and 3:1 merger remnants. The effect of the merger geometry on the properties of the remnants is discussed. The shape of the LOSVD of the simulated remnants does in general not agree with observations. An additional stellar disk component with 15 of the total stellar mass and a scale length of the order of the effective radius, artificially added to the merger remnants, can solve this problem. The results lead to the conclusion that collisionless merging of disk galaxies cannot explain the formation of observed elliptical galaxies. The progenitor galaxies must have contained a significant amount of gas.

Book Dynamical Evolution of Disk Galaxies

Download or read book Dynamical Evolution of Disk Galaxies written by Frank Hohl and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer model for isolated disks of stars is presented and is used to study the self-consistent motion of large numbers of point masses as they move in the plane of the galactic disk. The Control Data 6600 computer system at the Langley Research Center was used to integrate the equations of motion for each star for systems containing from 50,000 to 200,000 stars. Any initially cold balanced disk was found to be violently unstable. A sufficient amount of velocity dispersion will stabilize all small-scale disturbances. However, most disks investigated were found to be unstable against slowly growing long-wavelength modes, and after about two rotations the disks tended to assume a bar-shaped structure. It was also found that the final mass distribution for most disks could be closely approximated by an exponential variation irrespective of the initial mass distribution. To study the development of spiral structure, the model was modified to include a fixed central force similar to that in the Schmidt model of the Galaxy. The mass of the stars in the disk was taken to be from 5 to 50 percent of the total mass of the Galaxy. The evolution of a number of initial distributions of stars was investigated. The results of the calculation gave a velocity dispersion for the disk stars which was about 50 percent larger than the value of about 30 km/sec found from observation of stars in the solar neighborhood. For some of the disks investigated, a pronounced spiral structure remained even after 8.5 rotations.
