Book Structural Studies of Liquids and Glasses Using Aerodynamic Levitation

Download or read book Structural Studies of Liquids and Glasses Using Aerodynamic Levitation written by Thomas Farmer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-07 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents neutron scattering data that contribute to the understanding of four distinct areas of condensed matter physics, including iso-compositional liquid-liquid phase transitions and the glass formation in rare earth doped BaTi2O5. In situ aerodynamic levitation with laser heating was combined with neutron scattering in order to study both liquid-liquid phase transitions in (Y2O3)x(Al2O3)1-x and the atomic and magnetic ordering in liquid Invar. Among several significant results, obtained in this case from small angle neutron scattering, was the absence of a phase transition across a range of temperatures and compositions in the yttria aluminates. As these are a principal system in which liquid-liquid phase transitions have been hypothesized, this is an important contribution in a contentious area.

Book Structural Evolution Chemical Order and Crystallization of Metallic Liquids and Glasses

Download or read book Structural Evolution Chemical Order and Crystallization of Metallic Liquids and Glasses written by Mark Lyell Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last 60 years, bulk metallic glasses have emerged as a new class of materials with highly desirable material properties. Their high strength, high elasticity, and corrosion resistance are attractive properties for viable commercial products. At its core, material properties are directly related to the underlying microstructure. By understanding the structural and chemical order in the liquid and undercooled liquid and their relationship to thermophysical properties such as viscosity, a greater understanding of bulk metallic glass formation can be achieved. In this dissertation, electrostatic levitation techniques are used to study the liquid in a containerless environment using a combination of X-ray and neutron scattering techniques. An X-ray diffraction study of liquid and glass Ni-Nb(-Ta) alloys reveals that an acceleration in the rate of structural ordering must take place near the glass transition, providing the framework for a structural description of fragility. X-ray diffraction and thermophysical property measurements of Zr-Ni binary alloys further characterize the structural connection to viscosity, and reveal signatures of chemical ordering in the liquid. By combining X-ray and neutron scattering measurements, the topological and chemical order in Zr80Pt20 and Zr77Rh23 liquids is characterized. Very different chemical order is found between these alloys, despite their remarkable similarity in topological order. Due to this structural similarity, a new metastable phase is predicted and later identified emerging from a deeply supercooled Zr77Rh23 liquid. Zr77Rh23 is found to have many metastable crystallization pathways, which are further characterized here. Through simultaneous wide-angle and small-angle X-ray scattering, the devitrification behavior of a bulk metallic glass (Vitreloy 105) is investigated and is found to decompose into two distinct compositions during crystallization. By understanding crystallization pathways in good glass-forming alloys, a better understanding of glass formation and its connections to structural and thermophysical properties can be achieved.

Book The Complete Book on Glass and Ceramics Technology 2nd Revised Edition

This book was released on 2017-04-09 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceramics also known as fire clay is an inorganic, non-metallic solid article, which is produced by the art or technique of heat and subsequent cooling. The ceramics industry in India came into existence about a century ago and has matured over time to form an industrial base. From traditional pottery making, the industry has evolved to find its place in the market for sophisticated insulators, electronic and electrical items. The ceramic industry has been modernizing continuously, by newer innovations in product design, quality etc. Glass is an inorganic product typically produced by melting a mixture of silica, soda and calcium compound with desired metallic oxides that serves as coloring agents. Indian glass industry will increase on the sidelines of real estate growth across retail, residential and office estate. Glass production involves the fusion of several inorganic substances. These various substances include products such as silica sand, soda ash, dolomite and limestone, representing together 99% of all the raw materials, excluding recycled glass. Glass-ceramics are mostly produced in two steps: First, a glass is formed by a glass-manufacturing process. The glass is cooled down and is then reheated in a second step. In this heat treatment the glass partly crystallizes. In most cases nucleation agents are added to the base composition of the glass-ceramic. These nucleation agents aid and control the crystallization process. Glass-ceramics are fine-grained polycrystalline materials formed when glasses of suitable compositions are heat treated and thus undergo controlled crystallization to the lower energy, crystalline state. It is important to emphasize a number of points in this statement on glass ceramics.Glass ceramics has helped the electronics industry build much smaller and highly efficient transistors, leading to advances in all types of devices. The book covers almost all important aspects of Glass and Ceramic Industry: Properties, Applications, Manufacturing, Processing and Photographs of Plant &Machinery with Supplier’s Contact Details. The major contents of the book are types of glasses, silicate glasses, boric oxide and borate glasses, phosphorus pentoxide and phosphate glasses, germanium dioxide and germanate glasses, titanate glasses, nitrate glasses, glasses based on water, halide glasses, modern glass working, monax and pyrex glass, electric welding, photo electric cells, glassy metals, analysis of glass, glass ceramics, ceramics as electrical materials, analysis of ceramics etc. The book will be useful to the consultants, technocrats, research scholars, libraries and existing units and new entrepreneurswho will find a good base to work further in this field. Book Study of Mechanical Behaviors and Structures of Bulk Metallic Glasses with High energy Synchrotron X ray Diffraction

Download or read book Study of Mechanical Behaviors and Structures of Bulk Metallic Glasses with High energy Synchrotron X ray Diffraction written by Feng Jiang and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation addresses two critical issues in the mechanical behaviors and structures of bulk-metallic glasses (BMGs): (1) the effect of composition, fabrication method, and pretreatment of plastic deformation on mechanical properties and structures of BMGs; (2) the mechanical response and structural evolution of BMGs in the elastic and plastic region. (Cu50Zr50)94Al6 and (Cu50Zr50)92Al amorphous alloys were used to study the effect of composition on mechanical properties and structures of BMGs. The (Cu50Zr50)94Al6 alloy exhibits lower yield stress and Young's modulus, higher Poisson's ratio, worse thermal stability, and better plasticity than (Cu50Zr50)92Al. Both the topological and chemical effects of Al addition account for the differences of mechanical and physical properties between them. A Zr55Ni5Al10Cu30 glass-forming alloy with injection casting (the melting temperatures are 1,550 K and 1,250 K, respectively) and with suction casting was fabricated. The results indicate that despite their amorphous structures, the suction-casting samples exhibit a lower yield stress, lower Young's modulus, and larger plastic strain than the injection-casting samples (the melting temperature is 1,550 K) due to more quenched-in free volumes in suction casting, which results from the higher cooling rate. The inhomogeneous plastic deformation in Zr50Cu40Al10 BMG samples was introduced by four-point-bend fatigue. There is almost no difference of the stress-strain behaviors between the deformed and undeformed samples. Elastostatic compression was used to introduce homogeneous deformation in Zr--0Cu6Ni16Al8 BMG samples. The preloaded samples are softer with decreases of yield strength and Young's moduli. Anisotropy was observed in the preloaded samples despite their small magnitudes, which even occurred at a relatively low temperature and applied stress level. The structural evolution of Zr--0Cu6Ni16Al8 BMG in the elastic region was analyzed with anisotropic pair density function. The analysis of the first shell of Zr--0Cu6Ni16Al8 glass confirms the structural changes in the elastic region. The bond reorientation leads to direction dependent changes in the chemical short-range order. The structural evolution in the plastic region of Zr--0Cu6Ni16Al8 BMG is investigated as well. The serrations were observed for both the stress-displacement and full width at half maximum-displacement curves. The excess free volume was measured, which increases with increasing the displacement.

Book Structural Analysis of Metallic Glasses with Computational Homology

Download or read book Structural Analysis of Metallic Glasses with Computational Homology written by Akihiko Hirata and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the application of computational homology for structural analysis of metallic glasses. Metallic glasses, relatively new materials in the field of metals, are the next-generation structural and functional materials owing to their excellent properties. To understand their properties and to develop novel metallic glass materials, it is necessary to uncover their atomic structures which have no periodicity, unlike crystals. Although many experimental and simulation studies have been performed to reveal the structures, it is extremely difficult to perceive a relationship between structures and properties without an appropriate point of view, or language. The purpose here is to show how a new approach using computational homology gives a useful insight into the interpretation of atomic structures. It is noted that computational homology has rapidly developed and is now widely applied for various data analyses. The book begins with a brief basic survey of metallic glasses and computational homology, then goes on to the detailed procedures and interpretation of computational homology analysis for metallic glasses. Understandable and readable information for both materials scientists and mathematicians is also provided.
