Book excerpt: Self-assembly is a general phenomenon which governs organization at length scales ranging from nm to mesoscale materials. When this self-assembly of nanoscale building blocks is confined at interfaces, structured interfaces can be created to modulate properties ranging from electronic, optical, biological or mechanical properties. In this thesis, we use liquid/air assembly to create structured or ordered monolayer of electronically active organic molecules and semiconducting carbon nanotubes (S-CNTs) from organic inks with exceptional control over the morphology, placement and resulting electronic properties. In the first part of this thesis we demonstrate the applicability of Langmuir-Blodgett method to the assembly of chromophores that do not strictly fall into the category of amphiphilic molecules. The ordering in the assembled layer is a function of the molecular structure, where a more rigid bridging groups lead to better ordering. Our studies show that these atypical molecules can be assembled in fairly ordered monolayers at the air/water interface and transferred to oxide surfaces, including TiO2 substrates, hence opening up a path to study the effect of specific molecular orientation or aggregation states on the charge injection dynamics. In the second part of the thesis we demonstrate a liquid/air assembly method based on an iteration of evaporative self-assembly process to create aligned monolayers of CNTs. Our method address many of the outstanding challenges in this field such as better control on the wafer scale, of the placement of S-CNTs, the type and functionalization of CNTs deposited, and their degree of alignment, density, and purity, to enable the fabrication of practical S-CNT electronic devices. Well-aligned arrays of highly electronic-type sorted S-CNTs were fabricated using Floating Evaporative Self-assembly (FESA), by exploiting the spreading of chloroform at the air/water interface of a trough. The devices fabricated by FESA show excellent S-CNT FET performance. The sorting agent PFO-BPy was used to selectively wrap and isolate S-CNT from heterogeneous mixtures in organic solvent. However, remaining polymer wrapper on the surface of CNTs can insulate the metal contact-CNT interface leading to charge injection barriers in S-CNT FETs. In the last part of the thesis we have developed a mild solution based process to remove the polymer wrapper from the S-CNT surface in solution and from aligned arrays, without adversely affecting its electronic properties. Complementary molecular dynamics simulations show that metal complexation to the backbone induces conformational changes that lead to a dynamic unwrapping of the polymer off the nanotube. Preliminary studies on this metal complexation of conjugated polymer backbone in the absence of nanotubes shows the formation of polymeric nanoparticles which is controlled by the kinetics of metal complexation.

The study of materials that have utility at the level of several, or single, molecules is exciting becausethe development of these sorts of systems offers a pathway to potentially avoid the perils of continually shrinking Silicon-based fabrication. This work examines the state of the art in fabrication techniques for semiconductor systems, then examines current examples of ME to be found in the academic literature. This review is designed to plumb the depths of a few important demonstrations, as opposed to a broad overview of the entire body of work. Further, scanning probe lithography techniques are demonstrated that allow for the study of small ensembles of interesting molecules in isolation. By utilizing these techniques, the structural and electronic properties of molecules can be studied, with a focus towards determining the likely utility of a particular species in a ME framework. Experimental study of redox-active self-assembled monolayer (SAM) films shows that under specific conditions, some films display a negative differential resistance (NDR) response that has possible utility in the development of ME devices. Ferrocene- and galvinol-terminated SAMs both show NDR at room temperature. A possible mechanism for the NDR behavior is believed to be resonant tunneling through low-lying, accessible redox-states in the molecule.

The intrinsic molecular electronic and magnetic properties are modified at a metallic interface, and greatly depend on the atomic configuration of the molecule-metal bond. This poses certain problems, such as the lack of reproducibility in the transport properties of molecular junctions, but also offers the possibility to induce new charge and spin configurations that are only present at the interface. The results presented in this thesis address this issue, providing a comprehensive overview of the influence of molecule-metal and molecule-molecule interactions on the electronic and magnetic properties of molecules adsorbed on metallic substrates. Using metal-phthalocyanines (MePc), a commonly used metal-organic complex as a model system, each chapter explores different aspects of the interaction with silver surfaces: the local adsorption geometry, self-assembly, the modifications of the electronic and magnetic characteristics due to hybridization and charge transfer, and finally the manipulation of molecular charge and spin states by electron doping using alkali atoms moved with the STM tip.
