Book Larger Than Life Lara

Download or read book Larger Than Life Lara written by Dandi Daley Mackall and published by NavPress. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This isn’t about me. This story, I mean. So already you got a reason to hang it up. At least that’s what Mrs. Smith, our English teacher, says. But the story is about ten-year-old Laney Grafton and the new girl in her class—Lara Phelps, whom everyone bullies from the minute she shows up. Laney is just relieved to have someone else as a target of bullying. But instead of acting the way a bullied kid normally acts, this new girl returns kindness for a meanness that intensifies . . . until nobody remains unchanged, not even the reader. In a unique and multi-layered story, with equal parts humor and angst, Laney communicates the art of storytelling as it happens, with chapter headings, such as: Character, Setting, Conflict, Rising Action, Climax. And she weaves an unforgettable tale of a new girl who transforms an entire class and, in the process, reveals the best and worst in all of us. This is a powerful and emotional story, which School Library Journal called “Thoroughly enjoyable and unexpectedly wry, . . . as intelligent as it is succinct.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Bigger Than Life Mary Ann Doane examines how the scalar operations of cinema, especially those of the close-up, disturb and reconfigure the spectator's sense of place, space, and orientation. Doane traces the history of scalar transformations from early cinema to the contemporary use of digital technology. In the early years of cinema, audiences regarded the monumental close-up, particularly of the face, as grotesque and often horrifying, even as it sought to expose a character's interiority through its magnification of detail and expression. Today, large-scale technologies such as IMAX and surround sound strive to dissolve the cinematic frame and invade the spectator's space, “immersing” them in image and sound. The notion of immersion, Doane contends, is symptomatic of a crisis of location in technologically mediated space and a reconceptualization of position, scale, and distance. In this way, cinematic scale and its modes of spatialization and despatialization have shaped the modern subject, interpolating them into the incessant expansion of commodification.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do I find fulfillment in life? How do I obtain happiness? Despite a multitude of self-help books in recent years, these eternal questions have become increasingly urgent in today’s directionless world. Author Jacques Philippe provides some answers. In his new book, Called to Life, he explains that a complete and fulfilled life is much more assured when we stop trying to chart our own course, when we realize that we are essentially creatures called by God. He goes on to describe where and how these calls take place: the events of life, the Word of God in Scripture, and interior motions of the Holy Spirit. Learning to recognize and follow these calls is what leads to a happy and full life. Called to Life includes a special section on how to read Sacred Scripture prayerfully (Lectio Divina), making this a timely source of inspiration and guidance following up on the recommendations of Pope Benedict XVI and the 2008 Synod of Bishops on the Word of God.

Key features include: • coverage of major theories including reader-response theory, New Criticism (formalism), psychoanalysis, Marxism, feminism, lesbian/gay/queer theories, African American theory, and postcolonial theory • practical demonstrations of how to use these theories to interpret short literary works selected from canonical authors including William Faulkner and Alice Walker • a chapter on reader-response theory that shows students how to use their personal responses to literature while avoiding typical pitfalls • sections on cultural criticism for each chapter that use our selected theories to interpret productions of popular culture This new edition also includes updated and expanded theoretical vocabulary, as well as "basic concepts" and "further study" sections, and an expanded "next-step" appendix that suggests additional literary works for extra practice. But when she seeks asylum with the vampire known as Liam, she learns the truth goes much deeper. Raised by extended family in extreme poverty under the rule of New Orleans’ sadistic Voodoo Queen, Marcelline Webster dreams of a better life for her family so they can live -- and practice their own form of Voodoo -- in peace. After the queen is killed, most of Marcy’s family is massacred by one gunman in the historic French Quarter. She’s forced to flee the city with the shooter in pursuit. Armed with nothing more than a name -- a vampire known as Liam living in Nashville, Indiana, an injured Marcy travels there with the last of her family in hopes of finding the only people she believes might be willing to offer them asylum. The last thing she expects when they arrive is to recognize Liam as the man who’s haunted her dreams for as long as she can remember. But with Voodoo attacking by day, nightmares taunting by night, and her would-be killer closing in, that’s the least of her problems. Discovering the answers to why everything is happening is all written in her blood. Will she be able to face the man hunting her, embrace her own unique abilities to protect herself and keep the ones she loves safe before it’s too late?
