Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2, University of Tubingen (Seminar für Anglistik), course: Historical Grammar, 15 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In the following essay the development of strong verbs in English will be examined, starting in the Old English period and reaching up to Modern English times. The different classification systems and conjugational patterns that apply for the periods will be compared. The main task of the essay will be to find out similarities differences and parts which have remained the same in these systems. In the course of the essay, the Old English system of strong verbs will be compared to the Middle English system and finally the Modern English system. In the next section the same will be done for Middle English strong verbs. In that section changes will already have to be mentioned. Afterwards, an entirely different classification of Modern English irregular verbs as suggested by Quirk & Greenbaum will be introduced. In addition the conjugational system of Modern English verbs will be described. Following this mainly descriptive first part of the essay, the second part will compare the systems and point out the main differences or similarities. The last section provides a summary of the developments which took place in the evolution of strong verbs and which have already been touched in the descriptions of the different classification systems.

Book The Regularity of the Irregular Verbs and Nouns in English

Download or read book The Regularity of the Irregular Verbs and Nouns in English written by Elena Even-Simkin and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-27 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents an in-depth study of the so-called irregular Past Tense (sing/sang) and Noun Plural (foot/feet) forms with Internal Vowel Alternation (IVA) in English demonstrating that they possess both a fixed phonological and semantic regularity. The innovative sign-oriented analysis and inductive methodology employed in this study are further supported by additional first language acquisition data, experimental studies and historical evidence. The data culled from multiple linguistic anthologies, dictionaries and thesauri have shown that although the IVA process comprises a relatively small number of nominal and verbal forms in Modern English, IVA, originally, was a prevalent and productive process in Old English, Indo-European and other language families. The results of this empirical study present and introduce a novel classification based on the regular and systematic iconic-phonological and semantic nature of all these diverse IVA processes both nominal and verbal that has been maintained throughout the history of English.

Book Irregularities in Modern English

Download or read book Irregularities in Modern English written by Hans Frede Nielsen and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is innovative, when compared to the first edition, in that it reverses the history of the English language. It takes present-day English as its point of departure, and gives historical explanations only in so far as they illustrate modern forms. The book does not presuppose a reading knowledge of Old and Middle English, but provides students with ready answers to questions they may have concerning modern "irregularities." Dutch and German examples and parallels, which might shed light on English forms and developments, have also been included. Comparisons not only heighten linguistic awareness on the part of the reader, but also to show what exactly happened in closely related languages.

Book The Morphology of English Dialects

Download or read book The Morphology of English Dialects written by Lieselotte Anderwald and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-09 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where do dialects differ from Standard English, and why are they so remarkably resilient? This study argues that commonly used verbs that deviate from Standard English for the most part have a long pedigree. Analysing the language use of over 120 dialect speakers, Lieselotte Anderwald demonstrates that not only are speakers justified historically in using these verbs, systematically these non-standard forms actually make more sense. By constituting a simpler system, they are generally more economical than their Standard English counterparts. Drawing on data collected from the Freiburg English Dialect Corpus (FRED), this innovative and engaging study will be of great interest to students and researchers of English language and linguistics, morphology and syntax.

Book English Linguistics

Download or read book English Linguistics written by Thomas Herbst and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010-06-17 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book introduces the reader to the central areas of English linguistics. The main sections are: the English language and linguistics - sounds - meaning-carrying units - sentences: models of grammar - meaning - utterances - variation. Notably, the book is written from a foreign student's perspective of the English language, i.e. aspects relevant to foreign language teaching receive particular attention. A great deal of emphasis is put on the insights to be gained from the analysis of corpora, especially with respect to the idiomatic character of language (idiom principle, valency approach). In addition, the text offers basic facts about the history of the language and elaborates on the differences between British and American English. The author demonstrates that a linguistic fact can usually be described in more than one way. To this end, each section contains a chapter written for beginners providing a broad outline and introducing the basic terminology. The remaining chapters in each section highlight linguistic facts in more detail and give an idea of how particular theories account for them. The book can be used both from the first semester onwards and as perfect study aid for final B.A.-examinations.
