Book Different Strokes for Different Folks

Download or read book Different Strokes for Different Folks written by Amy Finger Ziegler and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-12-21 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many younger people (in their 30s and 40s) are having strokes and are stuck in a rehabilitation process designed for eighty year olds. I was a dedicated runner and professional outdoor sports enthusiast when I had my stroke at age 47. I had to be creative and forceful in my rehab to take advantage of my youth and strength. I was seriously debilitated (paralyzed from my face to my toes on the left side), but my vision, speech, and cognitive areas (memory, reasoning, geographic orientation) were largely left intact. Exercise was already a daily habit easily replaced by dedicated physical therapy. After the first very hard month in the hospital, I had to push my therapists to give me more than their established routines. I had to insist with my family that I was capable of doing more than the doctors said I could. I took risks that might have proved fatal to an elderly stroke survivor but they enabled me to regain my former life. This is my story, its not a model rehab program. It might be just what you have been craving to hear is possible in stroke recovery.

Download or read book Davy s Run written by John Owens and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Davy's Run is the story of friendship, tragedy, resilience and the courage to keep going. Following years of recovery from two strokes, firstly in the early 1990s and the latter in 2011, I was on track to re-join my unit in the military. However, something didn't feel right: I wasn't myself, I didn't like this person I had become. I had to learn how to apply new strategies and deal with the demons in my head. My confidence soon returned and I found myself on the start line of the Glasgow 10k (Ten Kilometre Race) in 2012 with my older sister. Without her I would never have had the courage to stand there amongst the runners, due to my anxiety and panic attacks.DAVID DAVIS (Davy) was always there for advice when I needed it. He joined the Army a few years before I did in 1989 and soon we became the best of friends, sharing countless stories of our upbringing in the heart of Ayrshire. We had a love of cars, the outdoors and mountaineering, in particular. I never met anyone who had anything bad to say about by friend, my brother, my inspiration. As my rollercoaster year of 2016 continued, I decided to do a charity run and go public about my recovery journey. My experience of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and my demons from the past, always act as a reminder of how I overcame tough times. While on one of my training runs in Helensburgh, I met up with Davy and his wife for what would be the last time I was to see my best friend alive. At his funeral, through the tears and sounds of motorbike engines saying goodbye, I heard a lone piper playing a lament and as a result DAVYSRUN was born. I wanted to do what helped me previously and that was to run, so a double marathon challenge was what I aimed to achieve, raise awareness of suicide and much needed funds for charity too. Having achieved this epic journey, I couldn't stop there and decided to run the rest of the year in his memory. But following my two strokes, was this even possible? My challenge was set. With the tears and tantrums, came injury, joy and relief. From breaking three personal best times in a row, to surviving the awesome River Ayr Way Ultra-marathon, this is a journey of self-belief and true friendship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am Meredith Gentry, P.I., solving cases in Los Angeles, far from the peril and deception of my real home–because I am also Princess Meredith, heir to the darkest throne faerie has to offer. The Unseelie Court infuses me with its power. But at what price does such magic come? How much of my human side will I have to give up, and how much of the sinister side of faerie will I have to embrace? To sit on a throne that has ruled through bloodshed and violence for centuries, I might have to become that which I dread the most. Enemies watch my every move. My cousin Cel strives to have me killed even now from his prison cell. But not all the assassination attempts are his. Some Unseelie nobles have waited centuries for my aunt Andais, Queen of Air and Darkness, to become weak enough that she might be toppled from her throne. Enemies unforeseen move against us–enemies who would murder the least among us. The threat will drive us to allow human police into faerie for the first time in our history. I need my allies now more than ever, especially since fate will lead me into the arm of Mistral, Master of Storms, the queen’s new captain of her guard. Our passion will reawaken powers long forgotten among the warriors of the sidhe. Pain and pleasure await me–and danger, as well, for some at that court seek only death. I will find new joys with the butterfly-winged demi-fey. My guards and I will show all of faerie that violence and sex are as popular among the sidhe as they are among the lesser fey of our court. The Darkness will weep, and Frost will comfort him. The gentlest of my guards will find new strength and break my heart. Passions undreamed of await us–and my enemies gather, for the future of both courts of faerie begins to unravel.

Book excerpt: Dirk Vlieks was at the top of his game. At the age of thirty-two he was a top-ranked triathlete with numerous Ironman finishes under his belt. That all changed in an instant one day in June of 2006 when he stepped groggily from his bike in Honu, Hawaii, and collapsed. He had suffered a stroke so devastating that by the time he reached the hospital, a doctor told his wife to prepare to turn off the machines keeping him alive. Vlieks spent the next two months in intensive care before he was strong enough to begin a rehabilitation program that included learning to speak, eat, and walk again. His first weaving assisted walks turned later to slow jogs, then short runs. Five years later, he returned to Hawaii to finish the race in which he nearly died. He would then run the New York City Marathon. In Square One: Returning to Life and Competitive Running After My Devastating Stroke, Vlieks shares his inspirational story about persevering against all odds. It has not been a smooth ride, and he continues to work—and run and inspire. His mission now is to help energize and motivate others to live their lives with determination and joy.

Book You Can Prevent a Stroke

Download or read book You Can Prevent a Stroke written by Joshua S. Yamamoto and published by RosettaBooks. This book was released on 2019-07-30 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 100,000 heartbeats a day means a lot of wear and tear over the years. Now two doctors explain how to lower the risk of a stroke as you age. Natural aging leads to artery plaque, high blood pressure, and slower and irregular heartbeats. You can do everything right, but while you can influence some aspects of aging on your own, some you cannot—at least not without your doctor’s help. Fortunately, the biology of aging is no longer mysterious. Heart and blood vessel health is knowable, measurable, and manageable. In You Can Prevent a Stroke, Dr. Joshua Yamamoto and Dr. Kristin Thomas help us understand what we can do, and what we can ask of our doctors, to manage the effects of aging on our circulation so that we do not have a stroke. Drawing on fundamentals learned at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, they offer principles and preventative steps that aren’t one-size-fit-all solutions or magical cures—just solid science to help anyone manage the natural processes that affect us all. Included is information on: · Establishing a relationship with a physician · Knowing the health of your heart · Knowing the health of your arteries · Knowing the regularity of your heartbeat · Knowing if it’s time to take a medicine to prevent plaque in your arteries, and whether you need a pill to prevent a blood clot Strokes can be avoided—and You Can Prevent a Stroke explains how.
