Book Exploring and Optimizing Agricultural Landscapes

Download or read book Exploring and Optimizing Agricultural Landscapes written by Lothar Mueller and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-14 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book informs about agricultural landscapes, their features, functions and regulatory mechanisms. It characterizes agricultural production systems, trends of their development, and their impacts on the landscape. Agricultural landscapes are multifunctional systems, coupled with all nexus problems of the 21th century. This has led to serious discrepancies between agriculture and environment, and between urban and rural population. The mission, key topics and methods of research in order to understanding, monitoring and controlling processes in rural landscapes is being explained. Studies of international expert teams, many of them from Russia, demonstrate approaches towards both improving agricultural productivity and sustainability, and enhancing ecosystem services of agricultural landscapes. Scientists of different disciplines, decision makers, farmers and further informed people dealing with the evolvement of thriving rural landscapes are the primary audience of this book.

Book The Potential for Conservation Tillage Adoption in the San Joaquin Valley California

Download or read book The Potential for Conservation Tillage Adoption in the San Joaquin Valley California written by Anne Vail Bossange and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While California researchers and relatively few farmers have successfully proven the efficacy of conservation tillage (CT) in the region, the adoption of the practice in the San Joaquin Valley (SJV) remains low. The gap between successful integration of these practices on farms and widespread adoption highlights the need to study the barriers limiting adoption. A combination of survey and interview methods was used to characterize CT adopters and non-adopters in the SJV and to learn directly from farmers about the barriers to CT adoption and the process of adoption used by current CT farmers. The survey quantified responses from 304 farmers about their attitudes toward CT, and the interviews collected more in depth information from 9 SJV farmers representing adopters and non-adopters. Larger farms with less crop diversity had higher levels of CT adoption which is of importance in the Central Valley region known for its diverse vegetable cropping rotations. Farmers who are not using CT indicated that "CT won't work for [their] crops" and that the economics had not yet been proven for this region. Survey and interview based insight from farmers already using CT suggests that, like many agricultural innovations, CT requires a commitment to gaining the knowledge and direct experience required to make it work. An additional and unexpected finding of this work is that farmers have different definitions of conservation tillage. Not only do farmers have different CT definitions but the farmers who have adopted CT have had to adapt CT systems that address challenges unique to their farms. Based on the findings of this work, extension efforts to increase adoption of CT will be most successful if they make clear the various challenges that can arise during CT adoption and offer continued support and assistance for farmers to develop their CT system. Increasing CT adoption in the SJV would contribute to maintaining soil health and reducing costs of production in a region of high agricultural production.

Book Advances in Agricultural Machinery and Technologies

Download or read book Advances in Agricultural Machinery and Technologies written by Guangnan Chen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The agricultural industry is dealing with enormous challenges across the globe, including the limited availability of arable lands and fresh water, as well as the effect of climate change. Machinery plays a crucial role in agriculture and farming systems, in order to feed the world’s growing population. In the last decade, we have witnessed major advances in agricultural machinery and technologies, particularly as manufacturers and researchers develop and apply various novel ways of automation as well as the data and information gathering and analyzing capabilities of their machinery. This book presents the state-of-the-art information on the important innovations in the agricultural and horticultural industry. It reviews and presents different novel technologies and implementation of these technologies to optimize farming processes and food production. There are four sections, each addressing a specific area of development. Section I discusses the recent development of farm machinery and technology. Section II focuses on water and irrigation engineering. Section III covers harvesting and post-harvest technology. Section IV describes computer modelling and simulation. Each section highlights current industry trends and latest research progress. This book is ideal for those working in or are associated with the fields of agriculture, agri-food chain and technology development and promotion.

Book Optimizing the Delivery of Multiple Ecosystem Goods and Services in Agricultural Systems

Download or read book Optimizing the Delivery of Multiple Ecosystem Goods and Services in Agricultural Systems written by Maria A. Tsiafouli and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural land is subjected to a variety of societal pressures, as demands for food, animal feed, and biomass production increase, with an added requirement to simultaneously maintain natural areas and mitigate climatic and environmental impacts. The biotic elements of agricultural systems interact with the abiotic environment to generate a number of ecosystem functions that offer services benefiting humans across many scales of time and space. The intensification of agriculture generally reduces biodiversity including that within soil, and impacts negatively upon a number of regulating and supporting ecosystem services. There is a global need toward achieving sustainable agricultural systems, as also highlighted in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. There is hence a need for management regimes that enhance both agricultural production and the associated provision of multiple ecosystem services. The articles of this Research Topic enhance our knowledge of how management practices applied to agricultural systems affect the delivery of multiple ecosystem services and how trade-offs between provisioning, regulating, and supporting services can be handled both above- and below-ground. They also show the diversity of topics that need to be considered within the framework of ecosystem services delivered by agricultural systems, from knowledge on basic concepts and newly-proposed frameworks, to a focus on specific ecosystem types such as grasslands and high nature-value farmlands, pollinator habitats, and soil habitats. This diversity of topics indicates the need for broader-scope research, integrated with targeted scientific research to promote sustainable agricultural practices and to ensure food security.
