This is a novel, with a hint of truth, behind the lies. The collapse of financial institutions goes global, as the economic market heads into freefall and insider trading is uncovered. Journalist, Tim Parkes, is to fit the pieces together, after surreptitiously been left clues to uncover. Just who is it, that started it all? As murders from large corporations are exposed, along with the murder of scientists; world leaders in semiconductors and gene manipulation for chemical and germ warfare become known, the financial world goes into a tailspin. With the knowledge of bribery and underhanded deals, Tim goes on a search to find the truth. He’s being targeted and watched and he knows it. He knows he needs to open this can of worms and bring the treachery to the table, before he becomes yet another dead pawn, in somebody’s game. As world-wide lending institutions, succumb to the ravages of global financial collapse, developed through their own unscrupulous activities, more and more people are left to fend for themselves. The collapse of the sub-prime mortgage industry, has left financial institutions to do, or to die. The sub-prime mortgage industry has disintegrated, leaving millions of people destitute in its wake. With lawlessness, disorder, looting and riots a way of life, this is a story, which brings price fixing to the fore, exposing cover-ups, market manipulation and murder. Book excerpt: In a war between democracy and civil rights, which do you choose? "The ability to control one’s own future is not a privilege, it’s a right!" The image of the figure who spoke was carried across all the comms channels by a hacker signal. It was an extreme ectomorph, tall and ultra thin, with slanted eyes, swirling dotted tattoos, an extended cranium and high curling hair.… "The ability to select one’s own government," it continued, "is not a privilege, it’s a right. Democracy is the only form of government that ensures these privileges remain rights - inalienable human rights. Rights that cannot be controlled by the privileged few, nor shared with bug-eyes, slimies or others whose alien ways corrupt human society! I am the Dalang, Speaker of the Wayang Liberation Front, and this is not the last you will hear from me! Long live the Federalist Revolution!" Book excerpt: Puppetry is arguably the most widespread form of performance. The artistry of puppetry includes aspects of the visual arts, theatre, music, and dance. Puppets can be traced as far back as ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome and are found today in cultures worldwide, across the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia. John Bell shows how puppets have been used to relay myths, poke fun at political figures, comment on cultural events of the period, express moral stories, and entertain adults and children alike. This richly illustrated book gives a historical overview and looks at the wide variety of this traditional art form. From European and Asian puppets in modern and ancient times to the Puppet Modernism movements, the book explores the important innovators and innovations of puppetry. Brief biographies of key figures such as Tony Sarg (credited with creating the first over-life-size puppets used for parades), Paul McPharlin (creator of Punch’s Circus), and Jim Henson (world-reknowned creator of many puppets, including the Muppets) help describe the evolution of puppetry. Definitions and descriptions of a variety of puppet styles, including shadow puppets, marionettes, hand puppets, rod puppets, and many others, add to the understanding of this fascinating form of art. With over one hundred color illustrations, this book highlights the "lives" of such characters as Kermit the Frog, Punch and Judy, Jack Pumpkinhead, and the traditional Chinese puppet Te-Yung to reveal the ways that puppets have become an integral part of many cultures. Captivating and fun, this book offers valuable insight into the wonderful world of puppetry.

Book excerpt: From the #1 bestselling author of The Historian comes a mesmerizing novel that spans the past and the present—and unearths the troubled history of a gorgeous but haunted country. A young American woman, Alexandra Boyd, has traveled to Sofia, Bulgaria, hoping that life abroad will salve the wounds left by the loss of her beloved brother. Soon after arriving in this elegant East European city, however, she helps an elderly couple into a taxi—and realizes too late that she has accidentally kept one of their bags. Inside she finds an ornately carved wooden box engraved with a name: Stoyan Lazarov. Raising the hinged lid, she discovers that she is holding an urn filled with human ashes. As Alexandra sets out to locate the family and return this precious item, she will first have to uncover the secrets of a talented musician who was shattered by political oppression—and she will find out all too quickly that this knowledge is fraught with its own danger. Elizabeth Kostova’s new novel is a tale of immense scope that delves into the horrors of a century and traverses the culture and landscape of this mysterious country. Suspenseful and beautifully written, it explores the power of stories, the pull of the past, and the hope and meaning that can sometimes be found in the aftermath of loss. Praise for The Shadow Land “A compelling and complex mystery, strong storytelling, and lyrical writing combine for an engrossing read.”—Publishers Weekly “In The Shadow Land, Elizabeth Kostova, a master storyteller, brings vividly to life an unfamiliar country—Bulgaria—and a painful history that feels particularly relevant now. You won’t want to put down this remarkable book.”—Claire Messud, author of The Woman Upstairs “In this brilliant work, what appears at first a minor mystery quickly becomes emblematic of a whole country’s hidden history. Lyrical and compelling, The Shadow Land proves a profound meditation on how evil is inflicted, endured, and, through courage and compassion, defeated. Elizabeth Kostova’s third novel clearly establishes her as one of America’s finest writers.”—Ron Rash, author of The Risen

Download or read book The Wind the Kite the String written by Edwin Willwerth and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2007-12 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two great writers and their books that have had an influenced on me in the writing of this book are Jonathan Swifts (1667-1745) and John Bunyan (1628-1688). Jonathan Swift masterpiece titled 'Gulliver's Travels' was an allegorical attack on the hypocrisy of the human behavior that he witnessed in almost every level of life in England, especially on the political stage. John Bunyan was the author of another famous allegorical book about a soul in search of salvation-'Pilgrim's Progress.' I do not believe this book will in any way approach the level of these two great masterpieces, but like Swift and Bunyan, I too have some comments about the behavior of my fellow Spacelanders (as I like to refer to them). What do they really believe in? What have they committed and dedicated their lives to? Because I believe the answers to these questions are the determining factors of their behavior. Like all allegorical books you will need a great imagination. But as Oscar Wilde said, "Imagination is a quality given man to compensate him for what he is not, and a sense of humor was provided to console him for what he is." Edwin Willwerth has been married for over fifty years and is the father of three children. He was a high school mathematics teacher for thirty years. Besides teaching in several public and private schools within the United States, he has also taught in Paraguay for one year, Nepal for two years and China for six months. He has been very active in his local church, serving for a number of years as a Sunday School teacher and later as head of the Sunday School Department. He was the Missionary Director within his church for several years. He has also spent time on Missionary projects in Haiti and Campeche, Mexico.

Download or read book Gentleman in the Shadows written by Douglas A. Wissing and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2019 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gentleman in the Shadows is a biography of Benjamin C. Evans Jr., a Central Intelligence Agency executive who operated at the top levels of the U.S. intelligence community during the darkest days of the Cold War. After serving as a covert case officer in revolutionary Havana, Cuba, and then managing The Asia Foundation, a sprawling CIA front organization, Evans was promoted to the CIA headquarters' seventh floor, where the executive directorate team managed world-changing intelligence missions. A socially adept administrator, Evans was the CIA Executive Secretary for seven Directors of Central Intelligence under four presidential administrations. Spooks said Evans was the traffic cop of the CIA. As a military intelligence and CIA officer, Evans was part of the tumultuous period that included America's crusade to democratize Occupied Japan, the Korean War, nuclear standoffs with the Soviet Union, the anti-Castro counterrevolutionary movement that climaxed in the Bay of Pigs invasion, the Vietnam War, Watergate, and the Family Jewels furor after the CIA's dirty secrets were revealed. Although he had global CIA responsibilities, Evans was among the coterie of top federal executives who operated out of the limelight-extraordinarily significant officials whose names were virtually unknown to the American public. Through his marriage, Evans was a member of America's elite that figured so prominently in the U.S. intelligence services. Born and raised in a prosperous family in Crawfordsville, Indiana, Evans was imbued with conservative Hoosier values that celebrated servant-leadership. Following his graduation from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Evans's social savvy and encultured mores stood him in good stead in Occupied Japan, where he served as aide-de-camp to General Eugene Harrison, a decorated World War II intelligence officer and Occupation administrator. It was in Occupied Japan that Evans and the general's stepdaughter, Jan King, fell in love, and later married. Jan King Evans came from old Washington aristocracy-self-described "cave-dwellers"-who allied with the powerful thronging the nation's capital. The family connections shaped Evans's career. When President Harry Truman recognized he needed a foreign intelligence service, General Harrison was on the commission that established what came to be the CIA. Not too many years later, Harrison and his cohorts insured that his son-in-law Evans, by then a respected military intelligence officer, was offered a position in the agency. So this book is also about CIA families, who not uncommonly led double lives of sequestered thoughts, unasked questions and intimate deception. An empathetic family man, Evans paid a psychological price for his emotionally isolate life in the clandestine service. The primary source material for this book is based on family archives, on-the-record interviews, and available declassified CIA documents. Given Evans' covert career and long executive service near the apex of U.S. intelligence, it is not surprising that the CIA has declassified only a small portion of the enormous volume of documents connected to his CIA career. As such, this book is incomplete; a contribution to the larger story of a remarkable gentleman spy, who remains partially in the shadows."--

Book The Visual World of Shadows

Download or read book The Visual World of Shadows written by Roberto Casati and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-12-26 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the perception of shadows, studied by vision scientists and visual artists, reveals the inner workings of the visual system. In The Visual World of Shadows, Roberto Casati and Patrick Cavanagh examine how the perception of shadows, as studied by vision scientists and visual artists, reveals the inner workings of the visual system. Shadows are at once a massive problem for vision—which must distinguish them from objects or material features of objects—and a resource, signaling the presence, location, shape, and size of objects. Casati and Cavanagh draw up an inventory of information retrievable from shadows, showing their amazing variety. They present an overview of the visual system, distinguishing between measurement and inference. They discuss the shadow mission, the work done by the visual brain to parse, and perhaps discard, the information from shadows; shadow ownership, the association of a shadow with the object that casts it; shadow labeling, the visual system's ability to tell shadows from nonshadows; and the shadow concept, our knowledge about shadows as a category. Casati and Cavanagh then apply the theoretical apparatus they have developed for shadows to other phenomena: illumination, reflection, and transparency. Finally, they examine the art of the shadow, paying tribute to artists' exploration of shadow, analyzing a series of artworks (reproduced in color) from a rich and fascinating art historical corpus.
