Book Stress Wave Propagation in a Prestressed Medium

Download or read book Stress Wave Propagation in a Prestressed Medium written by Thomas J. Ahrens and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explosion-induced radiation patterns in prestressed plates which represent two-dimensional models of explosions in the prestressed earth were studied. Radial explosive sources were detonated in plates of 1/8 in. thick glass and 1/8 in. and 1/16 in. Plexiglas prestressed in either tension or shear to various stress levels (static principal stresses were on the order of 100 bars). Radiation patterns of the resulting plate compressional and plate shear waves were observed using dynamic photoelasticity (employing high speed photography) or using electrical strain gages (employing high speed, single-sweep oscillography). The measured compressional and shear velocities in Pyrex glass were 5.34 and 3.32 mm/microsec, and in Plexiglas they were 2.31 and 1.33 mm/microsec which agree closely with published data. Although compressional and shear waves were clearly optically resolved, no azimuthal variation was seen with compressional or shear wave radiation patterns (in spite of strong preferential cracking in the case of prestressed glass). This is because the photoelastic patterns resulted from superposition of a high static (approximately 100 bars) and relatively low dynamic (approximately 10 bars) stress. By contrast, radiation patterns recorded with the strain gages in Plexiglas indicated a sharp maximum in shear wave amplitude and possibly a slight maximum in compressional wave amplitude at approximately 30 degrees from the tensile axis. The ratio of the maximum longitudinal to maximum shear wave strain energy had a consistent minimum, (the ratio decreases by a factor of 10 to 100) at 30 degrees from the tensile axis. (Author).

Book Seismic Wave Propagation in Stratified Media

Download or read book Seismic Wave Propagation in Stratified Media written by Brian Kennett and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seismic Wave Propagation in Stratified Media presents a systematic treatment of the interaction of seismic waves with Earth structure. The theoretical development is physically based and is closely tied to the nature of the seismograms observed across a wide range of distance scales - from a few kilometres as in shallow reflection work for geophysical prospecting, to many thousands of kilometres for major earthquakes. A unified framework is presented for all classes of seismic phenomena, for both body waves and surface waves. Since its first publication in 1983 this book has been an important resource for understanding the way in which seismic waves can be understood in terms of reflection and transmission properties of Earth models, and how complete theoretical seismograms can be calculated. The methods allow the development of specific approximations that allow concentration on different seismic arrivals and hence provide a direct tie to seismic observations.

Book Seismic Wave Propagation in the Earth

Download or read book Seismic Wave Propagation in the Earth written by A. Hanyga and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains an extensive presentation of the theory, phenomenology and interpretation of seismic waves produced by natural and artificial sources. Each theoretical topic discussed in the book is presented in a self-contained and mathematically rigorous form, yet without excessive demands on the reader's mathematical background. It is the only book to include such a complete presentation of the mathematical background and modern developments of the WKBJ theory of seismic waves, and detailed discussions of its wide ranging applications. The book will therefore be useful to postgraduate students and research workers specialising in seismic wave theory, theoretical seismology, electromagnetic wave theory and other fields of wave propagation theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most readable survey of the theoretical core of current knowledge available. The author gives a concise account of the classical theory necessary to an understanding of the subject and considers how this theory has been extended to solids.

Book Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation

Download or read book Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation written by Donald O. Thompson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 2198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Proceedings, consisting of Parts A and B, contain the edited versions of most of the papers presented at the annual Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation held at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine on July 28 to August 2, 1996. The Review was organized by the Center for NDE at Iowa State University, in cooperation with the American Society of Nondestructive Testing, the Ames Laboratory of the USDOE, the Federal Aviation Administration, the National Institute of Standardsand Technology, and the National Science Foundation Industry!University Cooperative Research Centers pro gram. This year's Review of Progress in QNDE was attended by approximately 400 participants from the U.S. and many foreign countries who presented over 350 papers. As usual, the meetingwas divided into 36 sessions, with as many as four sessions running concurrently. The Review covered all phases of NDE research and development from fundamental investigations to engineering applications or inspection systems, and it included many important methods of inspection techniques from acoustics to x-rays. In the last eight to ten years, the Review has stabilized at about its current size, which most participants seem to agree is large enough to permit a full-scale overview of the latest developments, but still small enough to retain the collegial atmosphere which has marked the Review since its inception.

Book Inhomogeneous Waves in Solids and Fluids

Download or read book Inhomogeneous Waves in Solids and Fluids written by Giacomo Caviglia and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1992 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book may be viewed as an introduction to time-harmonic waves in dissipative bodies, notably viscoelastic solids and fluids. The inhomogeneity of the waves, which is due to the fact that planes of constant phase are not parallel to planes of constant amplitude, is shown to be strictly related to the dissipativity of the medium. A preliminary analysis is performed on the propagation of inhomogeneous waves in unbounded media and of reflection and refraction at plane interfaces. Then emphasis is given to those features that are of significance for applications. In essence, they regard surface waves, scattering by (curved) obstacles, wave propagation in layered heterogeneous media, and ray methods. The pertinent mathematical techniques are discussed so as to make the book reasonably self-contained.
