With the increase expectations in job performance, shift schedules, organizational demands, and personal life, officers have little to no time to exercise. This thesis will examine the importance of a routine physical fitness program for officers as a way to manage stress. The Delphi Method is the survey method used for data collection, using experts in the field of police work, fitness, and physical or mental stress. Data entry and analyses were performed using Predictive Analytics Software Statistics 18. Police Officers experience mental and physical ailments associated with prolonged stress and physical training exercises can increase a police officers' resiliency helping them maintain or gain physical and mental hardiness and manage stress. This thesis recommends recommends that all law enforcement agencies implement a mandated exercise program to assist officers with stress therefore making them more fit to perform their duties and help manage the stress associated with police work.

Book excerpt: A quantitative, non-experimental, correlational research design was employed to study the relationship between frequency of exercise (independent variable) and stress management and coping skills (dependent variables) among 104 sworn law enforcement officers in Southern California. Two validated survey instruments, the Law Enforcement Officer Stress Survey (LEOSS) (Van Hasselt, Sheehan, Sellers, Baker & Couwels, 2009), and the Self-Control Management Survey (SCMS) (Mezo, 2009) were utilized to collect data related to the dependent variables. There was no statistically significant relationship found between self-reported frequency of exercise and stress management or coping skills, as measured by the LEOSS and the SCMS respectively. Self-reported survey data was also collected in reference to three other independent variables: (1) type of assignment (administrative or field based), (2) years of service, and (3) involvement in a critical incident within the past five years. No statistically significant relationship was found to exist between these independent variables and the dependent variables. The majority of the sample participants had no involvement in critical incidents in the last 5 years, which constitutes 69.2% of the total sample. With regards to the years of service of the sample participants, majority of the participants had served as law enforcements officers for over 25 years (55.8%). Regarding job assignment, the majority of the participants (67.3%) had administrative-based job assignments while a minority (30.8%) served as field-based officers. It is suggested future research employ more robust experimental research designs that test for actual fitness levels and enable the researcher to assess physiological stress indicators during simulated critical incident scenarios.

Book excerpt: When one thinks of police work, the immediate danger of this occupation comes to mind—the everyday threat of violence, death, and witnessing traumatic events in their work. Less noted however is the physical and psychological danger associated with police work, including harmful environmental exposure, stress and trauma. Based on research, the adverse health and psychological consequences of this occupation far outweigh the dangers of the street. The primary purpose of this book is therefore to focus on these less known, less talked about dangers in policing. The mental well-being, health, and average life span of police officers appear to be affected by these factors. Hence, the title –“dying for the job”—reflects not so much the danger on the street but the hidden health dangers associated with policing. Many of the researchers who contributed to this book are epidemiologists and biostatisticians who are part of a National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) CDC five-year research study on police health titled “BCOPS”—the Buffalo Cardio-Metabolic Occupational Police Stress study. Still other contributors are experts in cancer, cardiovascular disease and psychological trauma. Recent events such as 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, the Sandy Hook school tragedy, and the Boston Marathon bombings emphasize the need to have a vibrant, healthy police force. It is necessary to maintain a high level of reliability by initiating health and stress prevention efforts. Chapters include: an examination of harmful physical work exposures; health disparities among police officers; cardiovascular risk in law enforcement; risk of cancer incidence and mortality among police officers; shift work and health consequences in policing; stressors and associated health effects for women police officers; suicide; post-traumatic stress disorder; resilience in policing; and PTSD symptoms, psychobiology, and coexisting disorders in police officers. Both law enforcement practitioners and administrators alike will benefit from reading this book.
