Download or read book Strengthening Social Cohesion in Korea Korean version written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Korea is confronting a serious challenges. It has to improve income equality in the context of a severe demographic transition. Such a transition, from one of the youngest populations in the OECD at present to the second oldest by 2050, may boost the need for public spending and slow economic growth. In this context and as the pace of population ageing is accelerating, it is important to act quickly in a wide range of areas:-Policies to sustain Korea's growth potential in the face of falling labour inputs;-Measures that improve both growth and equality;-Carefully-targeted increases in social spending to reduce inequality and poverty;-Financing higher social spending, with priority given to a reform of tax and social security that minimises the negative impact on output growth. Against the background of these broad challenges, which are discussed in a specific, setting-the-ground, Chapter, the report suggests policy options, based on the practices and reforms of other countries, in the following four areas: I) Income Distribution and Poverty; II) Tackling the Duality of the Labour Market; III) Early Childcare; and IV) Moving beyond Hospitals to better Care in the Community.

Book Social Cohesion in Asia

Download or read book Social Cohesion in Asia written by Aurel Croissant and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the historical origins, contemporary dynamics and future challenges of social cohesion in South, Southeast and East Asia—one of the most dynamic and at the same time heterogeneous regions in the world, in terms of economic, political and human development. The comparative case studies in this volume develop a better understanding of social cohesion in Asia by exploring how social cohesion is understood, analyzed and sometimes politically instrumentalised. Examining different dimensions and qualities of social cohesion and how they are linked together, it also discusses the challenges of social cohesion in individual societies. The case studies include examples from Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Myanmar, Singapore, South Korea and Mainland China and building on the conceptual work and empirical findings of the Asian Social Cohesion Radar, this book provides detailed cross-country analyses over the past 15 years. Combining rigorous conceptual and theoretical reasoning with a systematic empirical analysis of trends across the region, Social Cohesion in Asia will be of great interest to students and scholars of Asian politics, international relations, political sociology, comparative politics and Democratization Studies.

Book Promoting Trust Building in a Unified Korean Society

Download or read book Promoting Trust Building in a Unified Korean Society written by Hyesun Shin and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With trust building and social cohesion as an essential part of a unification process on the Korean peninsula, this study is guided by the following research question: How can the arts contribute to the social cohesion of a unified Korean society and what arts-based policy strategy can be developed and operationalized? Thus far, most scholarly research regarding a Korean unification has dealt with political and economic factors. However, precedent cases of unification (e.g., Germany) exhibit that solely institutional integration cannot create a truly cohesive society, which is central to unification. It is essential to acknowledge that political and economic unification cannot encompass the social cohesion of two societies that have developed in irreconcilable directions over the last 60 years of division. Also, the true meaning of unification can be articulated only after building a unified civil society where trust and a sense of belonging have been restored amongst citizens from both South and North Korea. Although the two Koreas historically stem from one nation - the Joseon Dynasty, South and North Korea have developed distinctive cultures under their different political regimes. In the discourse of unification, therefore, the chasm in politics and culture between the two separate societies must be at the center of discussion. Recognizing the importance of social cohesion, this research asserts that the arts can facilitate bridging people who hold different ideological and cultural values, building trust, and constructing one national identity for Korean citizens. It employs concepts related to 'soft power,' 'trust,' 'public purposes of the arts,' and 'nonprofit.' This study engages in qualitative research designed to inform the creation of an arts-based policy strategy to stimulate social cohesion in a unified Korean society. It is designed based on document analysis and case studies using grounded theory. It aims at understanding the cultural gap between South and North Koreans and ultimately developing an arts-based policy strategy, which employs the arts as a catalyst for restoring trust between people of the divided societies on the Korean peninsula, as part of a peaceful unification.

  • Author : Hagen Koo
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press

  • ISBN : 1501764934
  • Pages : 159 pages

Download or read book Privilege and Anxiety written by Hagen Koo and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-15 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Privilege and Anxiety, Hagen Koo examines what has happened to the Korean middle class in the era of neoliberal globalization and demonstrates that global economic change brought more profound changes than mere economic decline and shrinking size to this class. Globalization has inserted an axis of polarization into the middle class, separating a small minority that benefits from the globalized economy from the large majority that suffers from it. This internal differentiation generates a challenging dynamic within Korean society, as the newly affluent seek to distinguish themselves from the rest of the middle class to establish a new, privileged class position. Privilege and Anxiety explores how these tensions play out in three areas: consumption and lifestyle, residential differentiation, and education. In all three areas, the dominant orientation of the affluent middle class is to preserve their newfound privilege and to pass it onto their children. Their new class practices, Koo argues, bring great anxiety to both the winners and losers of neoliberal globalization.
