Book excerpt: Tanzania has come across traditional forms of cooperation, which have survived the impact of colonialism and the structural changes, which accompanied the so-called modern society. iModerni cooperatives have been introduced in Tanzania by colonial governments to increase cash crop production and to control (and tax) economic activity in rural areas, but also to protect farmers against exploitation from moneylenders and traders. Most of these organizations, which previously played a major role in development of Tanzaniais agriculture, have faced chronic financial and management problems in recent past. The purpose of this study was therefore to identify and promote appropriate strategies for organizing and empowering farmers' group organizations in order to determine their own destiny in the process of bettering their livelihoods and alleviation of poverty.

Major themes covered in the book include: contract farming policy; contract farming and value chain dynamics; contract farming adoption decisions; contract farming and income diversification. The authors also discuss alternative aspects of contract farming such as trust, conspiracy, empowerment and corporate social responsibility. The book presents original research from case studies conducted in Tanzania on sugarcane, tobacco, sunflower and cotton. These crops have a history of trials and errors with contract farming involving smallholders. Furthermore, they are targeted in national strategies as some of the main crops for establishment and upgrading of agro-industrial activities in Tanzania.

Book excerpt: This open access book is about understanding the processes involved in the transformation of smallholder rice farming in the Lower Mekong Basin from a low-yielding subsistence activity to one producing the surpluses needed for national self-sufficiency and a high-value export industry. For centuries, farmers in the Basin have regarded rice as “white gold”, reflecting its centrality to their food security and well-being. In the past four decades, rice has also become a commercial crop of great importance to Mekong farmers, augmenting but not replacing its role in securing their subsistence. This book is based on collaborative research to (a) compare the current situation and trajectories of rice farmers within and between different regions of the Lower Mekong, (b) explore the value chains linking rice farmers with new technologies and input and output markets within and across national borders, and (c) understand the changing role of government policies in facilitating the on-going evolution of commercial rice farming. An introductory section places the research in geographical and historical context. Four major sections deal in turn with studies of rice farming, value chains, and policies in Northeast Thailand, Central Laos, Southeastern Cambodia, and the Mekong Delta. The final section examines the implications for rice policy in the region as a whole.

Book excerpt: This booklet shows the results of the first “cluster” put together by the Experience Capitalization project implemented by CTA in different parts of the world – a group made up of representatives of some of the farmer organisations working in East Africa: the Uganda National Farmers Federation, the Kenya National Farmers Federation, the Kenya Livestock Producers Association, MVIWATA in Tanzania, and also of the East Africa Farmers Federation. Not knowing much about “experience capitalization”, they came together for a first workshop in Nairobi at the end of 2016 – and they all started their own capitalization process. CTA’s objective was that participants would not just discuss the concepts and principles behind the capitalization approach, but that they would work together with their colleagues back home and complete the process within a few months. What follows are the first results of these processes.

And while access to agricultural services is not the only factor that can enhance rural people's livelihoods, it is a very important one. What role do farmer organizations play in improving access to these services for the poor? Do poor farmers participate in farmer organizations? Or do farmer organizations have other strategies to improve the livelihoods of poor farmers? Questions like these are key to identifying new approaches for strengthening the capacity of farmer organizations to enhance the pro-poor aspects and accessibility of agricultural services. Using case studies in Benin, Rwanda and Tanzania, researchers from the Royal Tropical Institute and partner organizations in those countries have developed and applied a framework for analyzing the functioning of farmer organizations and their role in service provision. The results show that different types of farmer organizations have different ways of dealing with the question of social inclusion, depending on the organization's background and membership profile, as well as its purpose and organizational structure, and these differences can have important consequences for the provision of services to both members and non-members.
