Book excerpt: Finalist for the Nebula and World Fantasy Awards: A lonely teenager hides in the forest concealing his own magic—until a battle for survival makes hiding impossible. Summer has come to Sauterelle Lake, a vacation community in the Oregon Cascades, and seventeen-year-old Nick Verrou would rather roam the woods than work in his father’s general store. His curiosity and connection with nature have him dodging his job at every opportunity. When he meets mysterious vacationer Willow and her family—and their unnerving pet wolf—Nick discovers that others share the powers he has tried to suppress. But Nick soon learns that nature’s magic can be more dangerous than he ever imagined. Now the real trick will be surviving until autumn . . . The Silent Strength of Stones is the second novel by the author of A Red Heart of Memories and other acclaimed works. “A startling new voice in contemporary fantasy” (Locus), Nina Kiriki Hoffman “writes about magic creatively and with great feeling” (Kirkus Reviews). The Silent Strength of Stones is the 2nd book in the Chapel Hollow Novels, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order. This ebook includes the bonus story “Words of Farewell.”

Book excerpt: In a theocratic world far into the future, cities control their own movements and organization. Constantly moving, growing and decaying, taking care of every need their inhabitants might think of, the cities have decided that humans are no longer a necessary part of their architecture, casting them out to wander in the wilderness and eke out a meager subsistence. To the exiled humans, the cities represent a paradisiacal Eden, a reminder of all they cannot attain due to their sinful and unworthy natures. But things are beginning to change. People are no longer willing to allow the cities to keep them out, choosing instead to force an entry and plunder at will. The cities are starting to crumble and die because they have no purpose or reason to continue living without citizens. One woman, called mad by some and wise by others, is the only human allowed to inhabit a city. From her lonely and precarious position at the heart of one of the greatest cities ever, she must decide the fate of the relationship between human society and the ancient strongholds of knowledge, while making one last desperate attempt to save the living cities.

Book Strength and Conditioning in Sports

Download or read book Strength and Conditioning in Sports written by Michael H. Stone and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-29 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A good sport scientist and coach must understand both the underlying mechanisms and the practical application of training principles. Strength and Conditioning in Sports: From Science to Practice is unique in that it covers both of these areas in a comprehensive manner. This textbook "connects" the mechanism with practical application. Selecting the appropriate training process is paramount to success in competitive sport. A major component of this textbook is the detailed explanations of developing that process from creating an annual plan, selection of the appropriate periodization model and how to program that model. In application, connecting physiology to performance can be enhanced by using appropriate athlete monitoring techniques. Although there can be overlap, monitoring can be divided into two components: fatigue management and program efficacy. One of the features of this text is the in-depth description of how the monitoring process should take place and how monitoring data can be used in program application. This exciting new text provides a comprehensive overview of the application of science to sport and will be key reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students of strength and conditioning, athletic training, exercise physiology, human performance, personal training, and other related disciplines of sport science and kinesiology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the most widely accessible building materials available to man, natural stone has been in extensive use for many centuries. It is a significant component, andin places the only one, of man-made structures the world over, and its properties, applications, and behavior over long periods of time constitute a story that is almost unbelievably complex. Important elements of the story are described and interrelated in this volume. That the exposed parts of the earth's crust provide a considerable variety of rock types is evident to any thoughtful observer. To the geologist falls the task of characterizing and explaining this variety, but many other kinds of specialists who are involved in the commercial use of stone also have an essential stake in the matter. From quarryman to mason, from architect to structural engineer, and certainly from purchaser to future observer, there is compelling interest in the nature, appearance, and durability of one stone as compared with another, or of stone as compared with some other material. Small wonder, then, that much has been written on the subject, and that numerous aspects of commercial stone and its properlies have appealed to a host of investigators. Research in this area also has been an official concern of many organizations, which in the United States include the American Society for Testing and Materials, the National Bureau of Standards, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the U. S. Geological Survey, and several state agencies.

Book Stone in Architecture

Download or read book Stone in Architecture written by Erhard Winkler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The readers of the first two editions of Stone: Properties, Durabi lity in Man's Environment, were mostly architects, restoration architects of buildings and monuments in natural stone, profes sionals who sought basic technical information for non-geologists. The increasing awareness of rapidly decaying monuments and their rescue from loss to future generations have urged this writer to update the 1973 and 1975 editions, now unavailable and out of print. Due to the 20-year-Iong interval, extensive updating was necessary to produce this new book. The present edition concentrates on the natural material stone, as building stone, dimension stone, architectural stone, and decorative field stones. Recently, the use of stone for thin curtain walls on buildings has become fashionable. The thin slabs exposed to anew, unknown complexity of stresses, resulting in bowing of crystalline marble, has attracted much negative pUblicity. The costs of replacing white slabs of marble on entire buildings with its legal implications have led construction com panies into bankruptcy. We blame many environmental problems on acid rain. Does acid rain really accelerate stone decay that much? Stone preservation is being attempted with an ever-increasing number of chemicals applied by as many specialists to save crumbling stone. Chemists filled this need during a time of temporary job scarcity, while the general geologist missed this opportunity; he was too deeply involved in the search for fossil fuels and metals.
