Book Indianapolis Then and Now

Download or read book Indianapolis Then and Now written by Nelson Price and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Putting archive and contemporary photographs of the same landmark side-by-side, Indianapolis Then and Now®? provides a visual chronicle of the city's pastThe development of Indianapolis has taken more unexpected turns than a driver at its world-famous Speedway. Roaring to life after a rather inauspicious start, Indianapolis became known as the "Crossroads of America" during the early 1900s, with a bustling Union Station train terminal as well as a flourishing literary and artistic scene of nationally renowned poets, painters, and playwrights. Mansions were built along the showplace thoroughfare of North Meridian Street, pharmaceutical and automobile industries employed thousands, and jazz music was played into the night. Teenagers at Shortridge High School produced the nation's first high school daily newspaper, and many went on to become novelists and politicians, including Booth Tarkington and Richard Lugar. The Hoosier capital occasionally veered off track; from the 1950s to the 1970s it was referred to as "Naptown" and "India-NO-place." Indianapolis has picked up speed since the 1990s and is once again a vibrant city, warmly nicknamed "Indy," with a spectacularly rejuvenated downtown. Residents have taken extraordinary care to preserve the best of the past, and have supported the development of new sports stadiums and retail outlets. Indianapolis Then and Now® features historic places such as the Indiana Statehouse, the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Lockerbie Square, and the Federal Building, as well as modern areas of interest such as the Monon Trail and Circle Centre, all showing the mixture of preservation and change in this historic city.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Faces and Places of IUPUI: Fifty Years in Indianapolis presents the story of the Indiana University—Purdue University Indianapolis campus in a new and unique way. With a focus on the "Fifty Faces of IUPUI," a select group of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members chosen by the campus, readers will learn how the campus developed out of the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1903 to become Indiana's premier urban public research university. From remarkable figures from the past such as Joseph T. Taylor, who grew up in the Jim Crow South and later became the Founding Dean of the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, to current undergraduates from a multitude of backgrounds and studying a range of disciplines, Faces and Places of IUPUI recounts the fascinating people who help make IUPUI a national and international leader in education and research. Using a combination of archival and contemporary photography, Faces and Places of IUPUI captures these stories and weaves them together to represent the university's evolution. By adopting strength-based educational discourse, contributors to Education Transformation in Muslim Societies reveal how critical the whole-person approach is when enriching the brain and the spirit and instilling hope back into the teaching and learning spaces of many Muslim societies and communities.

Book Infrastructure Separation and Inequality

Download or read book Infrastructure Separation and Inequality written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1890 and 1930 in the city of Indianapolis, people in charge made certain decisions regarding infrastructure--the character and condition of streets and sidewalks, the provision of sewer services and garbage collection, the location of the city's dump, and the placement of the city's sewage treatment plant--that resulted in long-term health and safety consequences. In Indianapolis, as in most modern American cities, some neighborhoods are less healthy for their inhabitants than others. The least healthy neighborhoods--those with the highest rates of cancer, for example--are situated on the city's southwest side. The southwest side of Indianapolis is also the location of the landfill, the sewage treatment plant, and much heavy industry. The entire city is at the mercy of an ill-designed sewer system, a system that taxpayers are spending millions annually to repair. The years from 1890 to 1930 saw the genesis of this state of affairs. In the city of Indianapolis since 1890, infrastructure has separated people from nature and from each other on two levels: its operational level, wherein it was an objective entity that performed according to its design, and its subjective level, where it operated as a social and hygienic barrier. Streets, curbs, sewers, and sidewalks are useful and necessary elements of public health and safety. We both want and need these elements to ensure our separation from things that are dangerous, such as speeding cars and contaminated water. When government officials exercise power to declare what parts of the city street are accessible to whom, or which neighborhoods will have a wastewater treatment plant, a landfill, or heavy industry nearby, infrastructure can work to separate people.

Book African Americans in Indianapolis

Download or read book African Americans in Indianapolis written by David L. Williams and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indianapolis has long been steeped in important moments in African American history, from businesswoman Madame C. J. Walker's success to the rise of the Ku Klux Klan to the founding of Crispus Attucks High School, which remained segregated through the 1960s. In African Americans in Indianapolis, author and historian David Leander Williams explores this history by examining the daunting and horrendous historical events African Americans living in Indianapolis encountered between 1820 and 1970, as well as the community's determination to overcome these challenges. Revealing many events that have yet to be recorded in history books, textbooks, or literature, Williams chronicles the lives and careers of many influential individuals and the organizations that worked tirelessly to open doors of opportunity to the entire African American community. African Americans in Indianapolis serves as a reminder of the advancements that Black midwestern ancestors made toward freedom and equality, as well as the continual struggle against inequalities that must be overcome.
