Book excerpt: If asked to list the greatest innovators of modern American poetry, few of us would think to include Jay-Z or Eminem in their number. And yet hip hop is the source of some of the most exciting developments in verse today. The media uproar in response to its controversial lyrical content has obscured hip hop's revolution of poetic craft and experience: Only in rap music can the beat of a song render poetic meter audible, allowing an MC's wordplay to move a club-full of eager listeners. Examining rap history's most memorable lyricists and their inimitable techniques, literary scholar Adam Bradley argues that we must understand rap as poetry or miss the vanguard of poetry today. Book of Rhymes explores America's least understood poets, unpacking their surprisingly complex craft, and according rap poetry the respect it deserves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The average hustler doesn’t last long on the streets, but I was fortunate and had an eleven-year run before I caught my case (before the police picked me up). A simple possession charge got me a three-year probation sentence, but I continued to hustle. On April 27, 2009, the FBI picked me up on a federal indictment charging me with distribution of five grams or more crack-cocaine base, and I was sentenced to five years in federal prison. While doing my bid, God blessed me with a vision to transform my rapping abilities into writing poems. He also blessed me with the ability to write novels, and the rest is basically history.

Book When Rap Spoke Straight to God

Download or read book When Rap Spoke Straight to God written by Erica Dawson and published by Tin House Books. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book-length poem navigating belief, black lives, the tragedies of Trump, and the boundaries of being a woman. "When Rap Spoke Straight to God is utterly transporting. In language both elevated and slangy, saucy and tender, Dawson lovingly weaves the reader around her finger.” —Jennifer Egan When Rap Spoke Straight to God isn’t sacred or profane, but a chorus joined in a single soliloquy, demanding to be heard. There’s Wu-Tang and Mary Magdelene with a foot fetish, Lil’ Kim and a self-loving Lilith. Slurs, catcalls, verses, erasures—Dawson asks readers, “Just how far is it to nigger?” Both grounded and transcendent, the book is reality and possibility. Dawson’s work has always been raw; but, When Rap Spoke Straight to God is as blunt as the answer to that earlier question: “Here.” Sometimes abrasive and often abraded, Dawson doesn’t flinch. A mix of traditional forms where sonnets mash up with sestinas morphing to heroic couplets, When Rap Spoke Straight to God insists that while you may recognize parts of the poem’s world, you can’t anticipate how it will evolve. With a literal exodus of light in the book’s final moments, When Rap Spoke Straight to God is a lament for and a celebration of blackness. It’s never depression; it’s defiance—a persistent resistance. In this book, like Wu-Tang says, the marginalized “ain’t nothing to f--- with.”

  • Pages : 108 pages

Download or read book Rap Poetry written by Gerard Vincent Ali and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My humble thoughts about this book, if you would allow me. RAP POETRY, "the next level" is a bold, exciting, fun to read fiction book. Saying that, I must add that this book is based on my life, my deeds, my thoughts, and most of all, the experience life has given me; so to say it is all fiction would be very far from the truth. I can probably pinpoint a situation in my life for every poem in this book and I believe my readers will also be able to, but this is not my intention for writing this letter. Traditionally poetry has not been the most successful form of writing when it comes to a healthy income, at least this is what I have been told, hopefully I'm wrong and you the publisher will prove there is no truth in this theory. I think this book Rap poetry "the next level" can be a great success, it's a bold, exciting and fun book to read, but what is even more important is that it will appeal to both young and old, something that most poets have not been able to do, and if they have I personally haven't seen their work. I have read poetry throughout my life and I have enjoyed it, at least sometimes, but to be quite honest if I was a teenager and entered a book store and happened to pick up a book with poems it would not keep my interest for more than two minutes. I only make this comment because I myself went searching for poetry simply to get some idea of how youths today respond to, or more so, what appeals to youths today in poetry. Not only was I un-captivated by any present material but I could not find one young person that had any interest in poetry, maybe I did not search far enough, personally I think this is sad. Rap poetry "the next level" is a bold step, but I believe it is as it says, The Next Level in rap and it dares any one who reads it too make it their own. I could have gone to a studio, put music to my lyrics, make them into songs as I have been advised to do on more than one occasion and who knows, maybe it will turn out that this is what I should have done. You see my goal, my aim, is to prove that people of all ages still do contrary to popular belief can see the beauty in lyrics of a poem before it becomes a hit song, that they do have an imagination and some sort or vision. The truth of it is, a song, and even more so a good song is one where music complements good lyrics to create something beautiful, but unfortunately writers are straying away from good lyrics to simply good rhythms and beats. I guess to each his own. Thank you in advance for taking time to read my book and my comments.

Book Defending Their Own in the Cold

Download or read book Defending Their Own in the Cold written by Marc Zimmerman and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defending Their Own in the Cold: The Cultural Turns of U.S. Puerto Ricans explores U.S. Puerto Rican culture in past and recent contexts. The book presents East Coast, Midwest, and Chicago cultural production while exploring Puerto Rican musical, film, artistic, and literary performance. Working within the theoretical frame of cultural, postcolonial, and diasporic studies, Marc Zimmerman relates the experience of Puerto Ricans to that of Chicanos and Cuban Americans, showing how even supposedly mainstream U.S. Puerto Ricans participate in a performative culture that embodies elements of possible cultural "Ricanstruction." Defending Their Own in the Cold examines various dimensions of U.S. Puerto Rican artistic life, including relations with other ethnic groups and resistance to colonialism and cultural assimilation. To illustrate how Puerto Ricans have survived and created new identities and relations out of their colonized and diasporic circumstances, Zimmerman looks at the cultural examples of Latino entertainment stars such as Jennifer Lopez and Benicio del Toro, visual artists Juan Sánchez, Ramón Flores, and Elizam Escobar, as well as Nuyorican dancer turned Midwest poet Carmen Pursifull. The book includes a comprehensive chapter on the development of U.S. Puerto Rican literature and a pioneering essay on Chicago Puerto Rican writing. A final essay considers Cuban cultural attitudes towards Puerto Ricans in a testimonial narrative by Miguel Barnet and reaches conclusions about the past and future of U.S. Puerto Rican culture. Zimmerman offers his own "semi-outsider" point of reference as a Jewish American Latin Americanist who grew up near New York City, matured in California, went on to work with and teach Latinos in the Midwest, and eventually married a woman from a Puerto Rican family with island and U.S. roots.
