Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now, in the West, such apostasy as deep and wide as was the past works of revival has now set in. There surely never has been in the history of redemption such a time as this. Humanity needs gospel workers—men mighty in the scriptures and filled with the Holy Ghost—to take the good news of the gospel again to the multitudes. So You Want to Be a Street Preacher offers advice for men looking to fill this role, those who believe they have a gift to preach God’s Word and desire to reach the lost of this world. Author Jimmy Hamilton, a.k.a. the Street Preacher, writes in the hope that God will raise up an army of street preachers throughout the world and send them into cities, towns, and villages to herald Christ once again. In this way, God will be glorified, Christ lifted up, and the church gathered in from the four corners of the earth. This guide for young men hoping to become street preachers seeks to take them with a heaven-sent love to rescue the perishing, care for the dying, and snatch them from sin and the grave.

Download or read book Popular Music Critique and Manic Street Preachers written by Mathijs Peters and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-29 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ways in which popular music can criticise political, social and economic structures, through the lens of alternate rock band Manic Street Preachers. Unlike most recent work on popular music, Peters concentrates largely on lyrical content to defend the provocative claim that the Welsh band pushes the critical message shaped in their lyrics to the forefront. Their music, this suggests, along with sleeve art, body-art, video-clips, clothes, interviews and performances, serves to emphasise this critical message and the primary role played by the band’s lyrics. Blending the disciplines of popular music studies, culture studies and philosophy, Peters confronts the ideas of German philosopher and social critic Theodor W. Adorno with the entire catalogue of Manic Street Preachers, from their 1988 single ‘Suicide Alley’ to their 2018 album Resistance is Futile. Although Adorno argues that popular music is unable to resist the standardising machinery of consumption culture, Peters paradoxically uses his ideas to show that Manic Street Preachers releases shape ‘critical models’ with which to formulate social and political critique. This notion of the ‘critical model’ enables Peters to argue that the catalogue of Manic Street Preachers critically addresses a wide range of themes, from totalitarianism to Holocaust representation, postmodern temporality to Europeanism, and from Nietzsche’s ideas about self-overcoming to reflections on digimodernism and post-truth politics. The book therefore persuasively shows that Manic Street Preacher lyrics constitute an intertextual network of links between diverse cultural and political phenomena, encouraging listeners to critically reflect on the structures that shape our lives.
Download or read book Ordinary Preacher Extraordinary Gospel written by Chris Neufeld-Erdman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to preach the gospel today? How do we shape vibrant congregations? How do we preachers not merely survive, but thrive? For nearly a quarter century, Chris Neufeld-Erdman has preached the gospel--sustaining congregational life and emboldening Christian witness in the midst of this turbulence. He's also taught seminarians and mentored working pastors. His theology and practice of preaching is hammered out on the anvil of real life. It's tested. True. Useful. In this book, a veteran pastor meditates on everything from exegesis and sermon preparation to the way preachers might preach after tsunamis, hurricanes, and earthquakes. He reflects on what it means, for example, to host the text in the midst of what feels like a terminal state of war and violence, both abroad and at home, as well as the task of preaching in the midst of the massive anxiety produced by economic uncertainty and political gridlock. Here's a book that will inspire and guide you as a wise, empowered preacher--an ordinary agent of the extraordinary gospel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some memories are permanently seared into our childhood brains with a hot iron of adrenaline and fear. For five-year-old Greg, it was the memory of his ma walking back to the house after confronting his stepdad with a splintered, bloodied baseball bat in her hand. Greg Stier was raised in a family of bodybuilding, tobacco-chewing, fist-fighting thugs. He never knew his biological father because his mom had met his dad at a party; she got pregnant, and he left town. Though his mom almost aborted him, in a last-minute twist, Greg’s life was spared for so much more. Unlikely Fighter is the incredible story of how God showed up in Greg’s life—and how he can show up in yours as well. This is a memoir of violence and mayhem—and how God can transform everything.
