Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid Vortices is a comprehensive, up-to-date, research-level overview covering all salient flows in which fluid vortices play a significant role. The various chapters have been written by specialists from North America, Europe and Asia, making for unsurpassed depth and breadth of coverage. Topics addressed include fundamental vortex flows (mixing layer vortices, vortex rings, wake vortices, vortex stability, etc.), industrial and environmental vortex flows (aero-propulsion system vortices, vortex-structure interaction, atmospheric vortices, computational methods with vortices, etc.), and multiphase vortex flows (free-surface effects, vortex cavitation, and bubble and particle interactions with vortices). The book can also be recommended as an advanced graduate-level supplementary textbook. The first nine chapters of the book are suitable for a one-term course; chapters 10--19 form the basis for a second one-term course.

Book Vorticity and Vortex Dynamics

Download or read book Vorticity and Vortex Dynamics written by Jie-Zhi Wu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-04-20 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive and intensive monograph for scientists, engineers and applied mathematicians, as well as graduate students in fluid dynamics. It starts with a brief review of fundamentals of fluid dynamics, with an innovative emphasis on the intrinsic orthogonal decomposition of fluid dynamic process, by which one naturally identifies the content and scope of vorticity and vortex dynamics. This is followed by a detailed presentation of vorticity dynamics as the basis of later development. In vortex dynamics part the book deals with the formation, motion, interaction, stability, and breakdown of various vortices. Typical vortex structures are analyzed in laminar, transitional, and turbulent flows, including stratified and rotational fluids. Physical understanding of vertical flow phenomena and mechanisms is the first priority throughout the book. To make the book self-contained, some mathematical background is briefly presented in the main text, but major prerequisites are systematically given in appendices. Material usually not seen in books on vortex dynamics is included, such as geophysical vortex dynamics, aerodynamic vortical flow diagnostics and management.

Book Vorticity Structure and Evolution in a Transverse Jet with New Algorithms for Scalable Particle Simulation

Download or read book Vorticity Structure and Evolution in a Transverse Jet with New Algorithms for Scalable Particle Simulation written by Youssef Mohamed Marzouk and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) molecular dynamics, and other fields. Simulations reveal the mechanisms by which vortical structures evolve; previous computational and experimental investigations of these processes have been incomplete at best, limited to low Reynolds numbers, transient early-stage dynamics, or Eulerian diagnostics of essentially Lagrangian phenomena. Transformation of the cylindrical shear layer emanating from the nozzle, initially dominated by azimuthal vorticity, begins with axial elongation of its lee side to form sections of counter-rotating vorticity aligned with the jet trajectory. Periodic rollup of the shear layer accompanies this deformation, creating arcs carrying azimuthal vorticity of alternating signs, curved toward the windward side of the jet. Following the pronounced bending of the trajectory into the crossflow, we observe a catastrophic breakdown of these sparse periodic structures into a dense distribution of smaller scales, with an attendant complexity of tangled vortex filaments. Nonetheless, spatial filtering of this region reveals the persistence of counter-rotating streamwise vorticity. We further characterize the flow by calculating maximum direct Lyapunov exponents of particle trajectories, identifying repelling material surfaces that organize finite-time mixing.

Book Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Experiments 3

Download or read book Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Experiments 3 written by G. Bergeles and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 932 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and discussses new developments in the area of turbulence modelling and measurements, with particular emphasis on engineering-related problems. At present, turbulence is one of the key issues in tackling engineering flow problems. Powerful computers and numerical methods are now available for solving the flow equations, but the simulation of turbulence effects which are nearly always important in practice, is still in an unsatisfactory state and introduces considerable uncertainities in the accuracy of CFD calculations. These and other aspects of turbulence modelling and measurements are dealt with in detail by experts in the field. The resulting book is an up-to-date review of the most recent research in this exciting area.

Book Development of Three dimensional Turbulent Wall Jets

Download or read book Development of Three dimensional Turbulent Wall Jets written by Huongguang Sun and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed flow field measurements were performed to investigate the development of the three-dimensional wall jet, the effect of initial conditions on the development of wall jets and the evolution of the large-scale vortex structures that causes the large lateral growth rate in the flow. Single-point measurements in the wall jet exiting a contoured nozzle indicated that there were two regions in the intermediate field 10 & le; x/D & le; 40. The flow underwent a significant change in the region 10 & le; x/D & le; 20 as it adjusted to the wall. The changes of the profiles of the moments and the reorientation of the regions of the mean streamwise vorticity slowed down in the region beyond x/D = 20 and were not apparent by x/D = 40. The comparison of measurements of wall jets exiting the contoured nozzle and the fully developed long pipe indicated that changes in initial conditions do affect the jet half-widths and the decay of the maximum streamwise velocity through near and intermediate fields. The differences in growth rates of wall jets, profiles of moments and contours of the mean streamwise vorticity in the two jets were reduced in the region after x/D = 10 and were not apparent in the region beyond x/D = 20 & ndash;30. Measurements of two-point, two-time correlation of the streamwise fluctuating velocity indicated that the large-scale vortex structures that consist two pair of horseshoe vortices in the flow continued to develop throughout the intermediate field. In particular, the inner vortex structures were induced towards the wall by the outer structures and the legs of the outer structures inclined relative to the streamwise direction as the flow evolved downstream. Measurements also indicated that the flow below the outer region of the streamwise vorticity was laterally convected faster than the outer vortex structures.

Download or read book Turbulent Shear Flows 4 written by L.J.S. Bradbury and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth International Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows took place at Karlsruhe University in Germany. The papers presented at this Symposium encompassed a similar range to that of the previous meetings, with greater emphasis placed on experimental work, and continued a trend towards the examination of complex flows. Once again, three dimensional, recirculating and reacting flows featured strongly in the programme and were complemented by consideration of two-phase flows and discussions of both numerical and experimental techniques. The Symposium brought together some 300 participants from all over the world, and it was evident that there is a need for Turbulent Shear Flows Symposia, in order to obtain and communicate new information useful to researchers in the field of turbulent flows and of interest to engineers who design flow equipment. This volume contains 27 papers selected from more than 100 presentations at the Symposium which have been reviewed and edited before publication. Together they provide an indication of the status of current knowledge on the subjects represented at the Sympo sium. They are grouped into four sections, namely: • Fundamentals • Free Flows • Boundary Layers • Reacting Flows As in previous volumes in this series, each section begins with an introductory article con sidering the papers which follow in the broader context of available literature and current research.
