Book excerpt: Forested headwater watersheds have been described as sentinels for understanding how the hydrologic cycle is affected by the changing climate. This thesis analyzes long-term streamflow level data from a forested stream located in the Appalachian Mountains, within the Ridge and Valley Province of central Pennsylvania. This objective is to characterize the variation in streamflow at Leading Ridge Watershed 1 over the past three decades, and to explore the magnitude and frequency of streamflow events. The research question is: how does streamflow vary at Leading Ridge Watershed 1 at various time scales? Continuous streamflow data were collected over three decades and statistically analyzed to produce visual plots and measure trends using the non-parametric Mann-Kendall statistical test. Mean daily streamflow, low flow values, the fall season, and the months of February and November were all found to have statistically significant decreasing trends across the three decades. The results inform the state of surface water in near natural catchments in relation to the varying climate.
