Book Streambank Erosion Adjacent to Different Riparian Land use Practices and Stream Patterns Along Bear Creek in North Central Iowa

Download or read book Streambank Erosion Adjacent to Different Riparian Land use Practices and Stream Patterns Along Bear Creek in North Central Iowa written by George Nick Zaimes and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The highest bank erosion rates where on the outside bends of cattle grazed pastures and crop fields with losses of 33 and 34 cm yr−1. Buffered banks had the lowest erosion rates, with only 12 cm yr−1 lost. Cattle grazed pastures and crop fields lost 341 kg m−1and 288 kg m−1 while riparian buffers lost only 55 kg m−1. If the entire 11 km reach of Bear Creek had riparian multi-species buffers the bank soil loss would be reduced by 62 percent. Riparian buffers provide an alternative land-use practice that will reduce soil bank loss and sediment load in the streams while also being financially attractive to farmers because the Conservation Reserve Program subsidizes the agricultural land lost.

Book New Vistas in Agroforestry

Download or read book New Vistas in Agroforestry written by P. K. Ramachandran Nair and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was in late 2002 that the idea of preparing a collection of multi-authored chapters on different aspects of ag- st forestry as a compendium for the 1 World Congress of Agroforestry, June 2004, was tossed around. With the approval of the idea by the Congress Organizing Committee, serious efforts to make it a reality got under way in early 2003. The rigorously peer-reviewed and edited manuscripts were submitted to the publisher in December 2003. Considering the many differentindividualsinvolved in the task as authors and manuscriptreviewers, we feel quite pleased that the task could be accomplished within this timeframe. We are pleased also about the contents on several counts. First of all, the tropical-temperate mix of topics is a rare feature of a publication of this nature. In spite of the scienti?c commonalities between tropical and temperate practices of agroforestry, the differences between them are so enormous that it is often impossible to mesh them together in one publication. Secondly, several of the chapters are on topics that have not been discussed or described much in agroforestryliterature. A third feature is that some of the authors, though well known in their own disciplinary areas, are somewhat new to agroforestry; the perceptions and outlooks of these scholars who are relatively unin?uenced by the past happenings in agroforestry gives a whole new dimension to agroforestry and broadensthescopeofthesubject. Finally, ratherthanjustreviewingandsummarizingpastwork, mostchapterstake the extra effort in attempting to outline the next steps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

Book Quantifying Stream Bank Erosion and Deposition Rates in a Central U S Urban Watershed

Download or read book Quantifying Stream Bank Erosion and Deposition Rates in a Central U S Urban Watershed written by Dandan Huang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stream bank stability is gaining increasing attention in part because stream bank erosion can contribute as much as 80% of suspended sediment to streams, particularly in urbanizing watersheds. Stream bank erosion study sites were located in a lower reach of the Hinkson Creek Watershed located in Boone County, Missouri, USA. Streambank erosion and deposition rates were quantified using the erosion pin method comparing a remnant Bottomland Hardwood Forest (BHF) streambank to an Agricultural (Ag) streambank (922 m apart). Ten erosion pin plots (n = 342 pins) were installed that spanned the range of bank geometric and vegetation cover variability. Results indicated that during a drier (762 mm) than average (10yr avg=1077 mm) rainfall year 15.6 and 177.7 tonnes of soil erosion occurred on the right stream bank alone of the BHF and Ag sites respectively (Water Year 2011). Average erosion depth of the BHF and Ag was 18 and 112 mm/yr respectively. The greatest average depth of erosion occurred during the winter season (44.7 mm), followed by summer (13.1 mm) and spring (6.3 mm), fall had the lowest average erosion rate (1.1 mm). The stream bank erosion contributed approximately 67% of channel suspended sediment loading over WY 2011.Results hold important implications for land-use and land managers wishing to improve land-use practices, water quality and natural resource sustainability in dynamic urbanizing watersheds.

Book Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems

Download or read book Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aldo Leopold, father of the "land ethic," once said, "The time has come for science to busy itself with the earth itself. The first step is to reconstruct a sample of what we had to begin with." The concept he expressedâ€"restorationâ€"is defined in this comprehensive new volume that examines the prospects for repairing the damage society has done to the nation's aquatic resources: lakes, rivers and streams, and wetlands. Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems outlines a national strategy for aquatic restoration, with practical recommendations, and features case studies of aquatic restoration activities around the country. The committee examines: Key concepts and techniques used in restoration. Common factors in successful restoration efforts. Threats to the health of the nation's aquatic ecosystems. Approaches to evaluation before, during, and after a restoration project. The emerging specialties of restoration and landscape ecology.

Book Estimating Streambank Erosion Using GPS based Watershed scale Video Mapping and USEPA BANCS for the Development of Sediment TMDLs

Download or read book Estimating Streambank Erosion Using GPS based Watershed scale Video Mapping and USEPA BANCS for the Development of Sediment TMDLs written by Kelsey Jo Hensley and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), sediment is one of the most common water pollutants in the nation's rivers. Consequently, the identification of streambank locations with high erosion potential is important in reducing sediment input via management and monitoring practices. Furthermore, the estimation of erosion rates and sediment loads can assist in the development of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs). The objective of this study was to integrate two USEPA-recommended approaches with the Streambank Video Mapping System (SVMS) in order to predict site-specific Total Daily Sediment Loads (TDSLs) and calculate sediment TMDLs for streambank erosion over several river kilometers. The SVMS, a GPS-based watershed-scale data collection method, was incorporated with the USEPA-approved Bank Assessment for Non-point source Consequences of Sediment (BANCS) model to evaluate streambank erodibility using the Bank Erosion Hazard Index (BEHI) and stream erosivity using Near Bank Stress (NBS). The SVMS was implemented to collect georeferenced video footage of streambank condition using three above water cameras mounted on a kayak. In addition, GPS and stream width were concurrently recorded. The video was ocularly evaluated using four parameters of a modified BEHI (mBEHI): bank angle, bank height to bankfull ratio, surface protection, and riparian diversity. The site-specific mBEHI scores and NBS scores were used along with the North Carolina Piedmont region erosion prediction curves to estimate annual Bank Erosion Rates (BERs). Additionally, USGS stream gage discharge data was utilized to estimate TDSLs. Sediment TMDLs for streambank erosion were calculated using TDSL estimates and the Maximum Daily Limit (MDL) equation, a statistically-based long-term average approach devised by the USEPA. This integrated methodology was implemented on a 22.5 kilometer section of the Driftwood River in Indiana and a 20.4 kilometer section of Upatoi Creek in Georgia. The Total Sediment Load (TSL) of Driftwood River was 222 t yr−1. km−1 [tonnes per year per kilometer] and the TMDL was 66 t d−1 [tonnes per day]. The TSL for Upatoi Creek was 109 t yr−1 km-1 and the TMDL was 24 t d−1
