Book Stratospheric Determination of Effective Photodissociation Cross Sections for Molecular Oxygen 191 204 Nm

Download or read book Stratospheric Determination of Effective Photodissociation Cross Sections for Molecular Oxygen 191 204 Nm written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Balloon-borne spectrometer measurements of solar ultraviolet irradiance have been used to provide direct estimates of effective photodissociation cross-sections (sigma sub i to the e power i = 10Ta lambda interval) for molecular oxygen appropriate for altitudes between 30 and 40 km. The calculations from which can be determined are based on an internally consistent, two-part analysis of ascent spectra. The fine resolution 02 absorption cross section derived from the fractional transmission between two altitudes is convolved with the calibrated insitu irradiance and then integrated over wavelength, yielding photodissociation rate coefficients (J-values) for the conditions of the flight: 22 April 1981 at 33 N latitude and approximately 50 Deg solar zenith angle. The J-values are then decomposed into the signma i sub e and average attenuated irradiances for the selected wavelength intervals. Photochemical models which incorporate these altitude-dependent 02 cross sections will reasonably approximate both the local optical attenuation and the photodissociation rate coefficients, since the sigma i sub e have been calculated by a simultaneous solution of both the attenuation and the photodissociation equations.

Book Determination of Partial Photoionization Cross Sections by Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Download or read book Determination of Partial Photoionization Cross Sections by Photoelectron Spectroscopy written by A. J. Blake and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A photoelectron energy spectrometer was used to determine partial photoionization cross sections of molecular oxygen, nitrogen and water vapour for monochromatic incident radiation in the wavelength range 584 - 900A. For each gas, cross sections were determined for transitions to particular ionic states which were identified by measuring the corresponding photoelectron energy. For molecular oxygen, cross sections were determined for transitions to the X(2)Pi-g, (a(4)Pi-u + A(2)Pi-u) b(4) Sigma( - )g and (2)Sigma( - )g states of O2(+) and at incident wavelengths longer than 680A a process of fluorescent autoionization involving quasi-stable states of the neutral oxygen molecule was also observed. Molecular nitrogen cross sections corresponding to transitions to the X(2)Sigma(+)g, A(2)Pi-u and B(2)Sigma(+)u states of N2(+) were determined. For water vapour, cross sections corresponding to transitions to the (2)B1 and (2)A1 states of H2O(+) were observed in addition to processes of dissociative ionization. In all cases the measurements illustrate the competition between various modes of decay which are energetically possible for incident radiation of a given wavelength. (Author).

Book Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water and Wastewater Treatment

Download or read book Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water and Wastewater Treatment written by Simon Parsons and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The suitability of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) for pollutant degradation was recognised in the early 1970s and much research and development work has been undertaken to commercialise some of these processes. AOPs have shown great potential in treating pollutants at both low and high concentrations and have found applications as diverse as ground water treatment, municipal wastewater sludge destruction and VOCs control. Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water and Wastewater Treatment is an overview of the advanced oxidation processes currently used or proposed for the remediation of water, wastewater, odours and sludge. The book contains two opening chapters which present introductions to advanced oxidation processes and a background to UV photolysis, seven chapters focusing on individual advanced oxidation processes and, finally, three chapters concentrating on selected applications of advanced oxidation processes. Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water and Wastewater Treatment will be invaluable to readers interested in water and wastewater treatment processes, including professionals and suppliers, as well as students and academics studying in this area. Dr Simon Parsons is a Senior Lecturer in Water Sciences at Cranfield University with ten years' experience of industrial and academic research and development.

Book New and Future Developments in Catalysis

Download or read book New and Future Developments in Catalysis written by Steven L Suib and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New and Future Developments in Catalysis is a package of seven books that compile the latest ideas concerning alternate and renewable energy sources and the role that catalysis plays in converting new renewable feedstock into biofuels and biochemicals. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts and catalytic processes will be discussed in a unified and comprehensive approach. There will be extensive cross-referencing within all volumes. The use of solar energy during various catalytic chemical processes for the production of an array of chemical products is the theme of this volume. Photocatalysis is a topic of increasing importance due to its essential role in many of today’s environmental and energy source problems. The use of solar energy for catalytic reactions results in a carbon dioxide–neutral process. All photocatalytic processes and the future developments in this area are discussed, including an economic analysis of the various processes. Offers in-depth coverage of all catalytic topics of current interest and outlines future challenges and research areas A clear and visual description of all parameters and conditions, enabling the reader to draw conclusions for a particular case Outlines the catalytic processes applicable to energy generation and design of green processes

Book The Atmosphere and Climate of Mars

Download or read book The Atmosphere and Climate of Mars written by Robert M. Haberle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-29 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity has long been fascinated by the planet Mars. Was its climate ever conducive to life? What is the atmosphere like today and why did it change so dramatically over time? Eleven spacecraft have successfully flown to Mars since the Viking mission of the 1970s and early 1980s. These orbiters, landers and rovers have generated vast amounts of data that now span a Martian decade (roughly eighteen years). This new volume brings together the many new ideas about the atmosphere and climate system that have emerged, including the complex interplay of the volatile and dust cycles, the atmosphere-surface interactions that connect them over time, and the diversity of the planet's environment and its complex history. Including tutorials and explanations of complicated ideas, students, researchers and non-specialists alike are able to use this resource to gain a thorough and up-to-date understanding of this most Earth-like of planetary neighbours.

Book Earth s Climate Response to a Changing Sun

Download or read book Earth s Climate Response to a Changing Sun written by Katja Matthes and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, scientists have been fascinated by the role of the Sun in the Earth's climate system. Recent discoveries, outlined in this book, have gradually unveiled a complex picture, in which our variable Sun affects the climate variability via a number of subtle pathways, the implications of which are only now becoming clear. This handbook provides the scientifically curious, from undergraduate students to policy makers with a complete and accessible panorama of our present understanding of the Sun-climate connection. 61 experts from different communities have contributed to it, which reflects the highly multidisciplinary nature of this topic. The handbook is organised as a mosaic of short chapters, each of which addresses a specific aspect, and can be read independently. The reader will learn about the assumptions, the data, the models, and the unknowns behind each mechanism by which solar variability may impact climate variability. None of these mechanisms can adequately explain global warming observed since the 1950s. However, several of them do impact climate variability, in particular on a regional level. This handbook aims at addressing these issues in a factual way, and thereby challenge the reader to sharpen his/her critical thinking in a debate that is frequently distorted by unfounded claims.
