Book The Permian of Northern Pangea

Download or read book The Permian of Northern Pangea written by Peter A. Scholle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Permian was a remarkable time period. It represents the maximum stage of Pangean continental assembly, includes a major global climatic shift from glacial to nonglacial conditions (icehouse-greenhouse transition), and is ter minated by one of the most profound faunal/floral extinction events in the Earth's history. In addition, Permian oceans, although poorly understood, must have had some quite unique characteristics. Permian seas reached the most extreme values of carbon, sulfur, and strontium isotopic ratios ever achieved in Phanerozoic time, and the isotopic ratios of all three elements abruptly returned to more "normal" values at, or very close to, the Permo Triassic boundary. Finally, the Permian is marked by an abundance of important sedimentary mineral resources. It has large fossil fuel concentra tions (coal, oil, and natural gas), enormous phosphate reserves, and very extensive evaporite deposits, including gypsum, anhydrite, and halite, as well as a variety of potash salts. Study of the Permian has been hampered, however, by a number of factors. These include a scattered geologic literature (presented in a variety of languages), a confusing regional and global stratigraphic framework (based, in part, on inadequate type sections), and largely provincial, often poorly correlatable faunas. All have contributed to the sparsity and inadequacy of overviews of this critical geological interval. The two volumes attempts to bring together some of the widely scattered observations about these fascinating rocks, at least for the northern (pre dominantly nonglacial) parts of Pangea.

Book Sedimentary Cover of the Craton in Canada

Download or read book Sedimentary Cover of the Craton in Canada written by D.F. Stott and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1993 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early chapters of the volume present data and interpretations of the geophysics of the craton and summarise, with sequential maps, the tectonic evolution of the craton. The main body of the text and accompanying plates and figures present the stratigraphy, structural history, and economic geology of specific sedimentary basins and regions. The volume concludes with a summary chapter in which the currently popular theories of cratonal tectonics are discussed and the unresolved questions are identified.

Book Permian and Triassic Stratigraphy of Mackenzie Delta and the British Barn and Richardson Mountains Yukon and Northwest Territories

Download or read book Permian and Triassic Stratigraphy of Mackenzie Delta and the British Barn and Richardson Mountains Yukon and Northwest Territories written by James Dixon and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area covered in this study extends from the northwesternmost part of Yukon eastward into the Richardson Mountains and under the Mackenzie Delta. The investigation aims to expand on previous stratigraphic studies and proposes formal nomenclature for unnamed parts of the Permian succession in the area. Information is provided on the Permian and Triassic stratigraphy and lithology of the area. Correlations between the various occurrences in the study area are attempted as well as more regional correlations with Permian and Triassic strata in the Yukon, mainland Northwest Territories, and adjacent Alaska. Paleogeographic reconstructions and the economic potential of Permian and Triassic strata in the study area are also discussed.

Book Upper Paleozoic Stratigraphy of the Eagle Plain Basin Yukon Territory

Download or read book Upper Paleozoic Stratigraphy of the Eagle Plain Basin Yukon Territory written by H. L. Martin and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upper Paleozoic strata in the southern part of the Eagle Plain Basin are termed the Imperial Formation of Late Devonian age, the unnamed shale unit of Devonian and Mississippian age, and the Hart River Formation of Late Mississippian (Chesteran) age. The latter is formally subdivided into the Birch, Canoe River, and Chance Sandstone Members. Both the Birch and Chance Sandstone Members are reservoir rocks where oil and gas have been discovered in commercial quantities. The hydrocarbons are present in non-argillaceous, conglomeratic sandstone whereas the intervening Canoe River Member is a siliceous shale in the southeast grading to a siliceous limestone in the central and western parts of the basin. The strata are believed to have been deposited in a deep water trough subparallel to the present-day Richardson Mountains which form the eastern border of the basin; turbidite flows are considered to be responsible for the formation of the conglomeratic sandstone.

This book was released on 1971 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identifications and age determinations are presented for fossils from twenty-three wells in the District of Mackenzie and the Yukon Territory. Ages range from Middle Cambrian to Tertiary and are based on identifications of spores, pollen, dinoflagellates, acritarchs, conodonts, foraminifers, graptolites, corals, pelecypods, brachiopods and trilobites.
