Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geological Evolution of Australia and New Zealand focuses on the stratigraphy of Australia and New Zealand. This compendium covers the stratigraphy, paleogeography, and paleontology of various systems, including the Precambrian, Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, and Carboniferous systems. Tectonism and igneous activity of these systems are also examined in this collection. Other systems considered are the Permian, Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous, Tertiary, and Quaternary systems. This book will be invaluable to archeologists, historians, researchers, and academicians interested in the stratigraphy of Australia and New Zealand, as well as those who wish to study the rock formation of their respective location.

Book Stratigraphic Interpretation of the Murray Peel Groundwater Investigation Area

Download or read book Stratigraphic Interpretation of the Murray Peel Groundwater Investigation Area written by Andrew Nicholas Jackson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation represents the first attempt in which the Integrated Prediction Error Filter Analysis (INPEFA) method has been applied on a regional scale to correlate stratigraphy within the Perth Basin, and more specifically the Murray-Peel region of Western Australia. The INPEFA method allows for the identification, and therefore correlation, of regional depositional trends typically resulting from historical sea level fluctuations (i.e. the speed, duration and frequency of marine regression and transgression events). Consequently, INPEFA helps identify unconformities and stratigraphic boundaries which is why this method aids stratigraphic interpretation. As is the case with all stratigraphic data however, local depositional influences can be superimposed over larger regional depositional trends, thereby adding complexity to stratigraphic interpretation. It was therefore important to understand and consider both regional and local depositional influences within this investigation. For the vast majority of bores, depositional trends and thus stratigraphic boundaries were able to be correlated using the INPEFA technique with a high level of confidence. It is, however, acknowledged that stratigraphic correlation became increasingly difficult across major faults and where the spatial distribution of bores was sparse, particularly where local depositional influences also appeared to vary. The stratigraphic interpretation that resulted from the aforementioned analysis was used to get a better geological understanding of the Murray-Peel investigation area via the creation of a3D conceptual geological model. This research identified an abrupt change in stratigraphy south of a major fault (i.e. fault 'A') which was caused by uplifting. The Leederville Formation of the central and northern Perth Basin, as described by Davidson (1995), alters across this fault to the Leederville Formation of the southern Perth Basin as described by Schafer et al. (2008) and Baddock et al. (2014). Therefore, this fault can be used to delineate the Pinjar, Wanneroo and Mariginiup Members from the Mowen, Upper Vasse and Lower Vasse Members of the Leederville Formation, respectively.

Download or read book Cool water Carbonates written by H. M. Pedley and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2006 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, work on cool-water carbonates has expanded to become a mainstream research area. Studies on modern and Quaternary deposits will continue to be important; however, there is increasing momentum towards unravelling sediment processes, biota-sediment interactions and diagenetic products in Cenozoic and older cool-water carbonates. Many contributions in this book document Cenozoic and Quaternary carbonates from landlocked (microtidal) water-bodies. These carbonates display important differences in biota and fabric distributions when compared with world ocean examples. Consequently, the scientific community is now better placed to reinterpret pre-Tertiary carbonates where there is a suspicion that they have developed under microtidal conditions. Some papers in the book provide new approaches to interpreting environmental change within macrotidal regimes and others lay firm foundations for future cool-water carbonate diagenetic research. The aim of the book is to illustrate recent international contributions to cool-water carbonates research, with an emphasis on Neogene and Recent case studies. Contributions are divided into three sections: microtidal carbonates from the Mediterranean realm; macrotidal examples from New Zealand, Australia and Mexico; and early diagenetic fabrics.

Book Carbonate Systems During the Olicocene Miocene Climatic Transition

Download or read book Carbonate Systems During the Olicocene Miocene Climatic Transition written by Maria Mutti and published by John Wiley and Sons. This book was released on 2011-06-13 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oligocene and Miocene Epochs comprise the most important phases in the Cenozoic global cooling that led from a greenhouse to an icehouse Earth. Recent major advances in the understanding and time-resolution of climate events taking place at this time, as well as the proliferation of studies on Oligocene and Miocene shallow-water/neritic carbonate systems, invite us to re-evaluate the significance of these carbonate systems in the context of changes in climate and Earth surface processes. Carbonate systems, because of a wide dependence on the ecological requirements of organisms producing the sediment, are sensitive recorders of changes in environmental conditions on the Earth surface. The papers included in this Special Publication address the dynamic evolution of carbonate systems deposited during the Oligocene and Miocene in the context on climatic and Earth surfaces processes focusing on climatic trends and controls over deposition; temporal changes in carbonate producers and palaeoecology; carbonate terminology; facies; processes and environmental parameters (including water temperature and production depth profiles); carbonate producers and their spatial and temporal variability; and tectonic controls over architecture. This book is part of the International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS) Special Publications. The Special Publications from the IAS are a set of thematic volumes edited by specialists on subjects of central interest to sedimentologists. Papers are reviewed and printed to the same high standards as those published in the journal Sedimentology and several of these volumes have become standard works of reference.
