Book Counting on the Latino Vote

Download or read book Counting on the Latino Vote written by Louis DeSipio and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latinos, along with other new immigrants, are not being incorporated into U.S. politics as rapidly as their predecessors, raising concerns about political fragmentation along ethnic lines. In Counting on the Latino Vote, Louis DeSipio uses the first national studies of Latinos to investigate whether they engage in bloc voting or are likely to do so in the future. To understand American racial and ethnic minority group politics, social scientists have largely relied on a black-white paradigm. DeSipio gives a more complex picture by drawing both on the histories of other ethnic groups and on up-to-date but underutilized studies of Hispanics' political attitudes, values, and behaviors. In order to explore the potential impact of Hispanics as an electorate, he analyzes the current Latino body politic and projects the possible voting patterns of those who reside in the United States but do not now vote.

What follows is a collection of essays on such subjects as "The Spanish Exploration, Conquest and Settlement of New Mexico, 1540-1680," "Spanish Culture of the Golden Age and Eighteenth Century," and histories of Chicanos, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans in the U.S. The volume covering Hispanic literature and art begins with an essay that attempts to foster an appreciation of Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Chicano arts and letters. Book Intersectionality Political Economy and Media

Download or read book Intersectionality Political Economy and Media written by Carolyn M. Byerly and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook considers the critical relationship between gender, race, and class and the political economy of media, providing an accessible introduction for students. Carolyn M. Byerly integrates gender, race, and class analysis in posing an intersectional political economy (IPE) of media theory, and demonstrates how that theory applies in examining communication laws, policies, technology, and other aspects of media today. By synthesizing feminist and critical race theories with more traditional class analysis, this book offers a unified approach to examining the media. Individual chapters delve into communication policy, ownership, governance, labor, and technology issues, with a concluding chapter that explores future research. The book situates citizen challenges to the media’s control by a small power elite within a dialectic of struggle and highlights specific campaigns that have pursued successful policy and media reform. Several short case studies by other authors illustrate how an IPE investigation can be undertaken. This is a key text for undergraduate and graduate media and communication courses such as Media and Society, Political Economy of Media, Gender, Race and Media, Research Methods, and more. It will also appeal to social science classes such as Media Sociology, Labor Studies, and Political Economy Research.
