Book Energy Efficiency in Developing Countries

Download or read book Energy Efficiency in Developing Countries written by Suzana Tavares da Silva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comparative analysis of energy efficiency policies in developing countries. Although there is a vast amount of literature available about renewable energy policy and implementation in the developing world, energy efficiency tends to lack attention. This book fills this lacuna by examining the current state of the field and scope for future improvements. Drawing on a wide range of case studies including Brazil, China and Chile, the authors use a comparative approach to examine the policies and programmes being implemented, looking at the existing legal frameworks and regulatory challenges. By showcasing stories of success, as well as barriers to energy efficiency, they highlight the opportunities for increased energy access and efficiency and demonstrate how these opportunities may directly impact on climate change mitigation. This volume will be a useful resource for scholars and practitioners with an interest in energy policy and efficiency, climate change and international development.

Book Changing Things Moving People

Download or read book Changing Things Moving People written by Ruth Kaufmann-Hayoz and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book results from a pioneering effort to organize a productive interdisciplinary research program on sustainable development policy in a small country not previously recognized as a world leader in environmental social science. The results are very promising, considering the short time frame and the high barriers to success for such an enterprise - differences in concepts and terminology, disciplinary myopia, and the inherent difficulty of the problem. In the USA, where I work, these barriers continue to pose major challenges after some 30 years of effort. Switzerland has made noteworthy progress in only five. I hope this book represents the beginning of a long term effort at problem-oriented interdisciplinary collaboration among Swiss researchers and prac titioners. The Swiss group has succeeded in developing a unifying framework that makes a major contri bution to environmental policy analysis. The framework broadens policy thinking by giving se rious treatment to underutilized strategies that rely on communication and informal influence as well as to well-studied ones that rely on technological change, regulation, and economic forces. This broad typology makes it easier for an analyst to escape the tendency to presume that the po licy instrument currently in fashion, whether it be market-based instruments, voluntary measures, or whatever, is the right strategy for all problems. It also encourages discipline-based analysts to consider how their favored strategies might be combined with other strategies less familiar to them, and thus to craft strategies that can take advantage of the strengths of various policy instruments.

Book Energy Efficiency and Conservation in the Developing World

Download or read book Energy Efficiency and Conservation in the Developing World written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1993 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a congruence of several forces in the developing world that makes very timely the formulation of a strategy to address energy efficiency and conservation issues better. Many countries are becoming receptive to reforming the way energy is produced and consumed as they experience (a) rapidly growing demand for energy; (b) major constraints on available energy financing; (c) increased pressures to sustain the environment; (d) poor energy sector performance and unsatisfied customers; and (e) a reappraisal of the roles of government and of the public and private sectors in development. These factors are forcing developing countries to address long-neglected issues of energy wastage in production and end use. The World Bank now has an enhanced opportunity to further assist developing countries to improve their energy efficiency and conservation policies and practices. The paper provides a background on the evolution of developed versus developing-country energy efficiency and summarizes World Bank experience. It outlines the growing energy demand in developing countries and the accompanying financial and environmental problems that bring energy-efficiency issues to the forefront. The paper then sets out the potential for improved energy efficiency and the main reasons that efficiency has been so poor. Finally, it summarizes the priority actions for achieving energy efficiency in developing countries and sets out a four-point program for the World Bank.

Book Energy Efficiency

Download or read book Energy Efficiency written by Olubusayo Aina and published by Olubusayo Aina. This book was released on with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst Europe and the Western World have set targets to go ‘carbon-neutral’ by 2050, the third World countries are oblivious. As usual, they don’t see what goes on, until it’s passed! Achieving the ‘zero-carbon’ status might be a long stretch for those in pursuit – particularly as embedded carbon is still an enigma; what can however, not be denied, are the positive impacts this venture will have on their environments, and energy economies. Attaining carbon neutrality, not only needs political will; But it also requires financial capabilities too. Elements, that are far and few in the third World countries. But I say, if we don’t have the muscle, we can leverage on the brains! On face value, we could easily point corruption, and the lack of political will, as the major reasons for the energy crisis in developing countries; A closer review will however, expose a greater depth to the wroth. And whilst we can trade blames forever, on the negligence of governments and governmental institutions in finding smart solutions to energy problems in these regions; the facts do clearly show, that ‘approach’ is more of a problem, than ‘intent’. I have a theory that sees energy efficiency as a compulsory prerequisite to renewable energy deployments, before optimal value can be gotten from grid installations, in third World countries. This is a proven technique for energy savings, carbon reduction and energy sustainability. And the UK retrofit initiative, is a testament to this. Currently, in developing Countries, emphasis is mostly placed on grid deployments. Having massive energy potential from the sunlight, doesn’t necessarily translate into successes in Solar Photovoltaic grid installations; And the third World countries are fast realizing this. I highlighted earlier, that we don’t have the financial muscle of the western World. But what we’re not in short of, is skills adaptation. The retrofit agenda in the United Kingdom - though produces the desired energy results; could at times, be very capital intensive. And capital, is what we don’t have in developing countries! Even when the capital is available, some other unsavory uses are found for them. This then highlights the need for tailored energy efficiency approaches, that would be applicable for third World countries. For starters; in developing countries, social amenities are often provided by the citizens themselves - with governments lacking in their basic responsibilities. Hence, it is unfeasible to expect home owners to single-handedly retrofit their homes, knowing fully well that the costs applicable, would be enormous. In this book, I outlined simple ways through which technicians, energy consultants, individual home owners and businesses in developing countries, can apply energy efficiency initiatives, before renewable energy installations are deployed. This, will not only guarantee energy savings and the smarter use of energy; but will also start us, on our own national quests to carbon neutrality.

Book Comparison of energy efficient and green buildings

Download or read book Comparison of energy efficient and green buildings written by Shrestha, Shritu and published by Universitätsverlag der TU Berlin. This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adverse environmental impacts from inefficient building construction increase if measures to reduce energy and resource use, through stringent building policies and efficient technology, are not implemented in developed and developing countries. To illustrate a holistic approach to reducing buildings’ energy and resources, the comparison of energy efficient and green buildings in terms of their technological aspects and their policy context in developed and developing countries, mainly in Europe, the USA and India, is presented together with a policy package recommendation for Nepal. A quality review of multiple literature sources, supported by various expert opinions, were the methods used for this in-depth analysis. It discusses that mandatory building standards, voluntary labels, information instruments and financial incentives are the most effective combination for the shift towards market transformation, that results in a higher share of energy efficient and green buildings. The lesson such as higher compliance with, and enforcement of, building energy standards can be seen in developed countries (e.g. Germany). Looking at a building’s life cycle perspective, it is not sufficient to focus solely on operational energy reduction in higher energy efficient buildings as this is achieved by the increased use of energy intensive materials. Green requirements must be considered in updating building energy standards and labels, particularly for developed countries. Green building certification will also become more effective when the stringency of energy standards is higher and when the whole building life cycle assessment is considered. Due to the increasing scarcity of energy and resources, many developing countries are forced to face up to the need for holistic green buildings. Although baseline standards are not as high as in most developed countries and national financial support is low, the gradual move towards making the standards more stringent and incorporating the wider scope of resource saving are positive developments in developing countries (e.g. India). However, to achieve significant success, strategies must include the establishment of a suitable funding environment, a political commitment and a strong government vision for long term and sustainable building construction. The challenges faced by Nepal are even greater due to the fast pace of urban growth and the absence of energy and resource efficient buildings policies, highlighting the need for an effective policy package. Overall, this dissertation demonstrates how energy efficient and green buildings are interlinked. Green buildings reinforced with higher levels of energy efficiency and energy efficient buildings incorporating green requirements are stepping-stones for achieving greater building energy and resource efficiencies. And a suitable policy package fosters its development.

Book Unlocking Commercial Financing for Clean Energy in East Asia

Download or read book Unlocking Commercial Financing for Clean Energy in East Asia written by Xiaodong Wang and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2013-10-05 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlocking Commercial Financing for Clean Eneargy in East Asia was written for government decision makers in middle and high-income countries, members of international financing communities, and practitioners. In East Asia, all middle-income countries have national targets for energy efficiency and renewable energy, and some even have targets for carbon reduction. However, a major hurdle to achieving a sustainable energy path is mobilizing the required financing. Policy makers must determine how to unlock commercial financing to scale up clean energy investments. Unlocking Commercial Financing for Clean Energy in East Asia builds on recent experience in applying public financing instruments and attempts to address the following issues: when and under what circumstances to use public financing instruments, which instrument to select, and how to design and implement them most effectively. First and foremost, effective and conducive policies are essential to catalyzing commercial investment in clean energy. Once the right policy regime has been put in place, public financing mechanisms designed to mitigate risks and close financing gaps have proven to play a major catalytic role in kick-starting substantial investments in clean energy. Public financing mechanisms for energy efficiency are particularly important to mitigating financiers' risk perceptions, to aggregating small deals, and to enhancing the interest and capacity of domestic banks. Public financing for renewable energy can provide long-term loan tenure to match the long payback period, mitigate technology risks, and increase access to financing for small and medium enterprises. The selection of public financing instruments should be tailored to the market barriers, the targeted market segments, the regulatory environment, and the maturity of the financial market. Engaging domestic banks through credit lines and guarantees has had the greatest impact in unlocking private financing. Dedicated funds and mezzanine and equity funds can effectively increase access to financing for small and medium enterprises and clean energy start-ups. Finally, the impact of public financing instruments can be substantially increased if they are packaged with technical assistance.

Book Sustainable Development and Innovation in the Energy Sector

Download or read book Sustainable Development and Innovation in the Energy Sector written by Ulrich Steger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-08-09 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores how these conflicting scenarios could be reconciled; how can we shape a more sustainable energy system from the existing one; and possible technological progress and innovations to enable a brighter future. Addresses the reality that there exists no consensus on the extent to which innovations can really contribute to reconciling ever-growing energy consumption, availability of resources and the environment, and the structural demands on any energy system. Offers and explains a four-point strategy: Energy should according to its importance regain a top priority in the political arena; higly targeted subsidies should be given for a limited amount of time to speed up the market introduction of energy-efficient and regenerative techniques in analogy to the ‚Dutch model‘; Negotiated agreements and unilateral self-commitments can subsequently ensure further market diffusion of sustainable energy innovations.; the basic research in energy should not be diminished but intensified instead
