Book The Lion Wakes

Download or read book The Lion Wakes written by David Kynaston and published by Profile Books. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 771 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lion Wakes tells the modern story of HSBC, starting in the late 1970s, when the bank first broke out of the Asia-Pacific region with its purchase of Marine Midland Bank in the US. It follows HSBC's battle to purchase Midland Bank in 1992, the subsequent move of head office from Hong Kong to London, and the string of acquisitions that brought the bank to its pre-eminent place in global finance today. Acclaimed historians Richard Roberts and David Kynaston chronicle the bank's struggles as well as its successes: the last part of the book deals with the ill-fated move into consumer finance in the US, as well as the financial crisis of 2008 and its effect on HSBC. Impeccably researched and generously illustrated from the HSBC archives, this is a valuable addition to global financial history.

Book Treatise on International Criminal Law

Download or read book Treatise on International Criminal Law written by Kai Ambos and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the adoption of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court in 1998, international criminal law has rapidly grown in importance. This three-volume treatise on international criminal law presents a foundational, systematic, consistent, and comprehensive analysis of the field. Taking into account the scholarly literature, not only sources written in English but also in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, the book draws on the author's extensive academic and practical work in international criminal law. This third volume offers a comprehensive analysis of the procedures and implementation of international law by international criminal tribunals and the International Criminal Court. Through analysis of the framework of international criminal procedure, the author considers each stage in the process of proceedings before the ICC, including the role of legal participants, the scope of jurisdiction, and the enforcement of sentences. The full three-volume treatise addresses the entirety of international criminal law, re-stating and re-examining the fundamental principles upon which it rests, the manner it is enacted, and the key issues that are shaping its future. It is essential reading for practitioners, scholars, and students of international criminal law alike.

Book European Union and Strategy

Download or read book European Union and Strategy written by Kjell Engelbrekt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume sets out to explore the paradox that the European Union (EU) produces policies with strategic qualities, but lacks the institutions and concepts to engage in strategic reasoning and action proper. The book has a two-fold agenda, exploring current EU external policies that are, or seem to be, linked to strategic priorities, and also studying the concept of strategy in the particular context of EU decision- and policymaking. The volume first examines the character of the Union as a strategic actor at this stage of its development. It then explores the ability of the Union to act and otherwise influence both its periphery and the wider world, focusing in particular on how it is perceived by other actors. The final section comprises personal assessments by a group of contributors regarding the character of the union as a strategic actor in the present and future. When these are pieced together, a picture emerges of a European strategy in the making, albeit one that so far is modest and partial. This book will be of interest to students of European Security, European Politics and IR.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A combination of poor planning, weak oversight and greed cheated U.S. taxpayers and undermined American forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. U.S. taxpayers have paid nearly $51 billion for projects in Iraq, including training the Iraqi army and police and rebuilding Iraq's oil, electric, justice, health and transportation sectors. Many of the projects did not succeed, partly because of violence in Iraq and friction between U.S. officials in Washington and Iraqi officials in Baghdad. The U.S. gov¿t. "was neither prepared for nor able to respond quickly to the ever-changing demands" of stabilizing Iraq and then rebuilding it. This report reviews the problems in the war effort, which the Bush admin. claimed would cost $2.4 billion. Charts and tables.

Book Parents as Leaders

Download or read book Parents as Leaders written by Dr. Theresa Adams and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-01-28 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parenting is one of the most influential and powerful leadership roles. This book explores how parents’ decisions affect themselves, their children, and the family as a whole. Strategic Leadership Consultants and I conducted studies within the Washington metropolitan area in order to illustrate to readers how children are less negatively affected in a harmonious, intact family. Also, we provide suggestions on how to promote a positive family structure by means of leadership training for parents, thus reducing the numbers of youths in special education classes, foster care, and risky practices like experimentation with drugs, joining gangs, gun violence, suicide, early parenthood, and mental health issues. Although, my primary target audience is parents, it is my sincere hope that others may benefit from the information provided. This book further explores how wildcard scenarios such as abuse, depression, and divorce can impact the mental and emotional stability of children. Expert advice from psychiatrist Stanley Turecki and psychologist Cynthia Buckson along with other professionals is shared. Candid stories throughout this book support my theory that parents’ choices can affect their children, in many cases, causing long-term mental challenges. These stories further underscore the great impact parents have on their children, both positive and negative. Additionally, I provided a list of suggested topics that parents may discuss with children at different developmental stages, as well as a resource section for parents and children in crisis, or in need of information. Also, I shared a contribution to our newly elected President "Barack Obama" and how he demonstrated exemplary leadership and parental skills. Hence, The purpose of this book is to inform and motivate parents to apply the leadership strategies suggested. The strategies and case studies presented may inspire parents to develop into stronger leaders for their children.

Book The American Way of Strategy

Download or read book The American Way of Strategy written by Michael Lind and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-10-02 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The American Way of Strategy, Lind argues that the goal of U.S. foreign policy has always been the preservation of the American way of life--embodied in civilian government, checks and balances, a commercial economy, and individual freedom. Lind describes how successive American statesmen--from George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Alexander Hamilton to Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, and Ronald Reagan--have pursued an American way of strategy that minimizes the dangers of empire and anarchy by two means: liberal internationalism and realism. At its best, the American way of strategy is a well-thought-out and practical guide designed to preserve a peaceful and demilitarized world by preventing an international system dominated by imperial and militarist states and its disruption by anarchy. When American leaders have followed this path, they have led our nation from success to success, and when they have deviated from it, the results have been disastrous. Framed in an engaging historical narrative, the book makes an important contribution to contemporary debates. The American Way of Strategy is certain to change the way that Americans understand U.S. foreign policy.

Book The Long March

    Book Details:
  • Author : M. Frampton
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2016-04-30
  • ISBN : 0230594719
  • Pages : 266 pages

Download or read book The Long March written by M. Frampton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sinn Féin has undergone a startling transformation in the last two-and-a-half decades. Under the leadership of its two principal figures Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness the mainstream party of Irish republicanism has changed beyond almost all recognition. It has moved from the margins of political life, on both sides of the Irish border, to a position where it occupies the Deputy First Minister's chair in Northern Ireland and was viewed, until recently, as the coming force in southern Irish politics. In this book, the contours of Sinn Féin's recent evolution are considered, with particular emphasis on the various strategic objectives that the party has set itself. Sinn Féin's attitude to the Northern Irish peace process is considered at length here and the book challenges the 'conventional wisdom' that would juxtapose republican 'politics' and republican 'war' the notion being that, during the 1990s, republicans exchanged the latter for the former and were, therefore, 'tamed' into becoming a 'normal' political party. The central argument here is that such a view rests on a false dichotomy. It has been said that 'war is merely the continuation of politics'; with respect to Sinn Féin, it is argued, the inverse formulation needs also to be considered, with republican politics seen, by republicans themselves, as an extension of the war. In following through this line of argument, this book attempts to consider republicans on their own terms; to take their thoughts and words 'seriously' and to examine their recent history accordingly.

This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing the need for a nuanced and subtle set of circumstances and factors, this book presents detailed and context-sensitive empirical evidence by comparing differential institutional changes in Turkey’s public sector with regard to the civil administration, public finance management and public procurement, and the influence wielded by the EU, the IMF, the World Bank, the OECD and other external actors . It shows that when the costs emanating from power struggles between politicians and bureaucrats are low and co-ordination between administrative stakeholders is high, external actors have a greater role to play in this process
