Book Memories of Belonging Descendants of Italian Migrants to the United States 1884 Present

Download or read book Memories of Belonging Descendants of Italian Migrants to the United States 1884 Present written by Christa Wirth and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memories of Belonging is a three-generation oral-history study of the offspring of southern Italians who migrated to Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1913. Supplemented with the interviewees’ private documents and working from U.S. and Italian archives, Christa Wirth documents a century of transatlantic migration, assimilation, and later-generation self-identification. Her research reveals how memories of migration, everyday life, and ethnicity are passed down through the generations, altered, and contested while constituting family identities. The fact that not all descendants of Italian migrants moved into the U.S. middle class, combined with their continued use of hyphenated identities, points to a history of lived ethnicity and societal exclusion. Moreover, this book demonstrates the extent of forgetting that is required in order to construct an ethnic identity.

Book Gli agenti presso la Santa Sede delle comunit e degli Stati stranieri

Download or read book Gli agenti presso la Santa Sede delle comunit e degli Stati stranieri written by a cura di Péter Tusor e Matteo Sanfilippo and published by Edizioni Sette Città. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Gli agenti presso la Santa Sede delle comunit e degli Stati stranieri I Secoli XV XVIII written by Matteo a cura di Sanfilippo and published by Edizioni Sette Città. This book was released on 2021-11-14 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Computer Applications for Handling Legal Evidence Police Investigation and Case Argumentation

Download or read book Computer Applications for Handling Legal Evidence Police Investigation and Case Argumentation written by Ephraim Nissan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-06-15 with total page 1375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of computer techniques and tools — especially from artificial intelligence (AI) — for handling legal evidence, police intelligence, crime analysis or detection, and forensic testing, with a sustained discussion of methods for the modelling of reasoning and forming an opinion about the evidence, methods for the modelling of argumentation, and computational approaches to dealing with legal, or any, narratives. By the 2000s, the modelling of reasoning on legal evidence has emerged as a significant area within the well-established field of AI & Law. An overview such as this one has never been attempted before. It offers a panoramic view of topics, techniques and tools. It is more than a survey, as topic after topic, the reader can get a closer view of approaches and techniques. One aim is to introduce practitioners of AI to the modelling legal evidence. Another aim is to introduce legal professionals, as well as the more technically oriented among law enforcement professionals, or researchers in police science, to information technology resources from which their own respective field stands to benefit. Computer scientists must not blunder into design choices resulting in tools objectionable for legal professionals, so it is important to be aware of ongoing controversies. A survey is provided of argumentation tools or methods for reasoning about the evidence. Another class of tools considered here is intended to assist in organisational aspects of managing of the evidence. Moreover, tools appropriate for crime detection, intelligence, and investigation include tools based on link analysis and data mining. Concepts and techniques are introduced, along with case studies. So are areas in the forensic sciences. Special chapters are devoted to VIRTOPSY (a procedure for legal medicine) and FLINTS (a tool for the police). This is both an introductory book (possibly a textbook), and a reference for specialists from various quarters.

Download or read book The Shamama Case written by Jessica M. Marglin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How a nineteenth-century lawsuit over the estate of a wealthy Tunisian Jew shines new light on the history of belonging In the winter of 1873, Nissim Shamama, a wealthy Jew from Tunisia, died suddenly in his palazzo in Livorno, Italy. His passing initiated a fierce lawsuit over his large estate. Before Shamama's riches could be disbursed among his aspiring heirs, Italian courts had to decide which law to apply to his estate—a matter that depended on his nationality. Was he an Italian citizen? A subject of the Bey of Tunis? Had he become stateless? Or was his Jewishness also his nationality? Tracing a decade-long legal battle involving Jews, Muslims, and Christians from both sides of the Mediterranean, The Shamama Case offers a riveting history of citizenship across regional, cultural, and political borders. On its face, the crux of the lawsuit seemed simple: To which state did Shamama belong when he died? But the case produced hundreds of pages in legal briefs and thousands of dollars in lawyers’ fees before the man's estate could be distributed among his quarrelsome heirs. Jessica Marglin follows the unfolding of events, from Shamama's rise to power in Tunis and his self-imposed exile in France, to his untimely death in Livorno and the clashing visions of nationality advanced during the lawsuit. Marglin brings to life a Dickensian array of individuals involved in the case: family members who hoped to inherit the estate; Tunisian government officials; an Algerian Jewish fixer; rabbis in Palestine, Tunisia, and Livorno; and some of Italy’s most famous legal minds. Drawing from a wealth of correspondence, legal briefs, rabbinic opinions, and court rulings, The Shamama Case reimagines how we think about Jews, the Mediterranean, and belonging in the nineteenth century.

Book British Internment and the Internment of Britons

Download or read book British Internment and the Internment of Britons written by Gilly Carr and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-18 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume presents a cutting-edge discussion and analysis of civilian 'enemy alien' internment in Britain, the internment of British civilians on the continent, and civilian internment camps run by the British within the wider British Empire. The book brings together a range of interdisciplinary specialists including archaeologists, historians, and heritage practitioners to give a full overview of the topic of internment internationally. Very little has been written about the experience of interned Britons on the continent during the Second World War compared with continentals interned in Britain. Even fewer accounts exist of the regime in British Dominions where British guards presided over the camps. This collection is the first to bring together the British experiences, as the common theme, in one study. The new research presented here also offers updated statistics for the camps whilst considering the period between 1945 to the present day through related site heritage issues.

Book Human mobility health inequity and needs

Download or read book Human mobility health inequity and needs written by Giuliano Bertazzoni and published by Sapienza Università Editrice. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, which brings together and consolidates the research work of the interdisciplinary EMHAM group, is focused on the relationship among human mobility, healthcare and fairness in public healthcare and treatment. The investigation of the information produced by the Emergency Departments of the Rome Metropolitan Area has proved to be strategic in identifying the healthcare needs of foreign populations. Many of the dynamics concerning migrants can be traced back to the inappropriateness of visits and accesses to the Emergency Departments. This information, together with the result of dynamic evaluations and assessments, is useful not only for healthcare issues, but also for the demographic, socio-political and economic characterisation of the phenomenon of human mobility.
