Book excerpt: Before Spider-Man and Dr. Strange, the legendary comic book artist Steve Ditko was conjuring all manners of horrors at his drawing table. In his first two years in the industry (1953 and 1954), Ditko drew tales of macabre suspense that were not yet hobbled by the imminent Comics Code Authority (adopted in October 1954). These stories featured graphic bloodshed, dismemberment and blood-curdling acid baths as the ugly end to the lives of the dark and twisted inhabitants of Steve Ditko’s imagination. Strange Suspense features spectacular full-color reprints of every story from those first two years of his career.

Book The Horror Comics

Download or read book The Horror Comics written by William Schoell and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-07-09 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Golden Age of the 1940s, through the Silver Age of the '60s, up until the early '80s--the end of the Bronze Age. Included are the earliest series, like American Comics Group's Adventures into the Unknown and Prize Comics' Frankenstein, and the controversial and gory comics of the '40s, such as EC's infamous and influential Tales from the Crypt. The resurgence of monster-horror titles during the '60s is explored, along with the return of horror anthologies like Dell Comics' Ghost Stories and Charlton's Ghostly Tales from the Haunted House. The explosion of horror titles following the relaxation of the comics code in the '70s is fully documented with chapters on Marvel's prodigious output--The Tomb of Dracula, Werewolf by Night and others--DC's anthologies--Witching Hour and Ghosts--and titles such as Swamp Thing, as well as the notable contributions of firms like Gold Key and Atlas. This book examines how horror comics exploited everyday terrors, and often reflected societal attitudes toward women and people who were different.

Book Dripping with Fear

Download or read book Dripping with Fear written by Steve Ditko and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2015-03-19 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dripping With Fear: The Steve Ditko Archives Volume 5 features another 200-plus meticulously restored, full-color pages from Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko in his early prime, at the time working in near anonymity for Charlton Comics in the then-popular horror/suspense genre. Comics like Tales of The Mysterious Traveler and This Magazine Is Haunted saw an explosion in Ditko's ingenuity, as he manipulated the traditional comic-book page layout with masterful results. It was during this time that Ditko and his art-school colleague, the famed fetish artist Eric Stanton, began sharing a studio in Manhattan. The introduction by editor Blake Bell examines Ditko's stylistic evolution and delves deep into his association with Stanton. Ditko's secret collaborations with Stanton on his female bondage material remain a highly controversial topic, and Bell's introduction highlights numerous examples that prove the allegedly shy and private Ditko contributed with wild abandon to these risqué tales of titillation. This fifth volume stands as the best example yet of the Steve Ditko that would soon begin crafting such iconic classics as Spider-Man and Doctor Strange alongside Stan Lee at Marvel Comics.

Download or read book Mysterious Suspense 1 written by Charlton Comics and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-03-20 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What Makes A Hero?" - - Vic Sage is a television commentator by day, a vigilante known as the Question by night. When he discovers that businessman Jason Ord is in cahoots with racketeer Max Kroe. Sage refuses to accept sponsorship from Ord, which causes Ord to orchestrate with Kroe a smear campaign against Sage. Little do they know that they are dealing with...the Question. The book opens with a one page forward, or introduction, drawn by Rocco "Rocke" Mastresorio, that explains that "we're back readers, because so many of you asked ... The Question!" The indicia indicates the the comic is to be published four times a year, but no other issues ever were published.Wow, pretty heavy stuff! This comic is pretty typical Ditko, of the time, heavy on dialogue and "message", and you can't read it in just a few minutes, like other comics published during the Silver Age, i.e. the 1960s. And now looking back, this book was published about two years after Ditko left Marvel Comics, after his falling out with Stan Lee. If you read those last words again, they could almost be directed at Lee, who may have begun taking more credit for Marvel's huge success, rather than sharing that success with the artists, such as Ditko and Jack Kirby! The comic reprints from are reproduced from actual classic comics, and sometimes reflect the imperfection of books that are decades old
