Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in the first volume of Strange Bedfellows, etymologically related words, most surprisingly so (strange bedfellows), are used to construct amusing and/or amazing pairs, phrases, whole sentences, essays and nonsense stories. Most are accompanied by silly comments, tall tales with recurring characters, poems, fake news and ads. A larger dose of satire than in vol.1 is also included, with a number of Trump send-ups. Again there is a large appendix citing many other etymological surprises.

Book excerpt: This wildly unorthodox book mixes original Spoonerism couplets with explanatory or crazy comments or stories, aimed at entertaining both wordplay nuts and ordinary mortals. Like Anil’s last four books (self-published but all Award Winners) it is an exercise in the use of constrained writing, with themes dictated by the spooner constraints. More than a gimmick, the constraints generate silly, amusing or unusual situations that he lacks the imagination to create de novo. The result is crazy fun. Yet it’s scholarly, seen in the big Spoonerism Dictionary at the end. Examples: synonyms: Achilles heel = hock-kill-ease ail. Here and now = Near? And how! antonyms: Bury the hatchet. ≠ Hurry the bad shit. Harmony ≠ Mar honey. essays: Free society—so see variety. Meet your Maker... Mate, you’re meeker! Money numby. Anil is a preacher turned biologist turned writer of wordplay. Born in Henderson, Kentucky, he was valedictorian and senior class president. He was further educated at Wake Forest (BS) and Johns Hopkins (PhD), with positions at U. Illinois, U. Pittsburgh, and U. Western Australia. Now a dual citizen of the USA and Australia, he lives in Perth. He has published five previous books of wordplay humour, with two others in press. He published over two hundred articles in the now defunct Word Ways and will continue contributing to its replacement, Journal of Wordplay, once it’s up and running. His major influences were a humour loving mother and authors Walt Kelly (Pogo), Lewis Carroll, Will Cuppy and Dave Morice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pervasive influence of law on medical practice and clinical bioethics is often noted with a combination of exasperation and lamentation. Physicians and non-physician bioethicists, generally speaking, consider the willingness of courts, legislatures, and regulatory agencies to insinuate themselves into clinical practice and medical research to be a distinctly negative aspect of contemporary American society. They are quick to point out that their colleagues in other Western developed nations are not similarly afflicted, and that the situation which obtains elsewhere is highly preferable to the legalization and purported over-regulation of medicine that has taken place in the United States during the last fifty years. In this book I offer a decidedly different perspective. It is, admittedly, not entirely without personal and professional bias. Prior to becoming a fu- time academic, teaching bioethics in the setting of an academic medical center, I was, for nearly 20 years, an attorney specializing in health law. Even after earning a doctorate in philosophy, I was frequently considered to be the “resident lawyer” on the bioethics faculty, much more frequently looked to for my insights on the law than my perspective as one who had formally studied moral philosophy and applied ethics. I note this not out ofa sense of frustration or disappointment, but as confirmation that even among physicians and n- physician bioethicists, there is widespread recognition that the law does have important contributions to make in assessing the practice ofmedicine and the conduct of medical research.

Book Principles of Osteoarthritis

Download or read book Principles of Osteoarthritis written by Bruce M. Rothschild and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-02-22 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the nature of the most common form of arthritis in humans. If osteoarthritis is inevitable (only premature death prevents all of us from being afflicted), it seems essential to facilitate its recognition, prevention, options, and indications for treatment. Progress in understanding this disease has occurred with recognition that it is not simply a degenerative joint disease. Causative factors, such as joint malalignment, ligamentous abnormalities, overuse, and biomechanical and metabolic factors have been recognized as amenable to intervention; genetic factors, less so; with metabolic diseases, intermediate. Its diagnosis is based on recognition of overgrowth of bone at joint margins. This contrasts with overgrowth of bone at vertebral margins, which is not a symptomatic phenomenon and has been renamed spondylosis deformans. Osteoarthritis describes an abnormality of joints, but the severity does not necessarily produce pain. The patient and his/her symptoms need to be treated, not the x-ray.
