According to my daughter, Cobie, I'm a world-traveling workaholic who doesn't spend enough quality time with her. So, this year, I'm whisking her off to Paris for a two week Christmas vacation of a lifetime and leaving work behind, except for a brief stop in Lake Mistletoe, Idaho to snap photos for a travel magazine feature. Cobie and I are forced to seek refuge in the town's cozy Gingerbread Inn when one of our bags, the one holding our passports, goes missing. As days turn into nights, I start to discover the charm of Lake Mistletoe and its tight-knit community. Along the way, I find myself slowly letting go of my rigid work-focused mindset, and opening up to new experiences and relationships, while Cobie embraces the small town ambiance. An unlikely bond develops with Sela Prince, a local with a warm heart and a penchant for seeing the beauty in everyday things. I'm attracted to her tenacity and vibrance for life. As we share stories, laughter, and challenges, our connection deepens and I'm finding it hard to remember the reasons why I can't stay. When the holidays are over and our blissful bubble bursts, I have to decide if I want to return to my fast-paced life or embrace the newfound love and sense of belonging I've found in Lake Mistletoe. With Sela and Cobie by my side, can I take a chance on a different kind of future?

Book excerpt: "Swann's Way" is the first part of the Proust's masterpiece "In Search of Lost Times," a book in seven volumes which is also famous as "Remembrance of Things Past." Proust has used flowery language to depict the beauty of France. However, oft times he ends up presenting searing criticism in the garb of wit and humour. Fascinating!

Book excerpt: An archaeological dig in the English countryside might be considered the safest of pastimes, but not for Simon Tappins. His life is turned upside down when a dramatic discovery sends him back two thousand years into a world time forgot. He is plunged into a dangerous period of British history, a pivotal point when the Roman Empire is collapsing and Saxon hordes are invading, sweeping aside the last legions. Simon is caught between the approaching Saxons and the ferocious but futile last stand of a Roman governor who, with the support of Germanic mercenaries, is intent on escaping with the wealth he has accumulated. Through all this runs Simons quest to solve a mystery. Only the lost crystal of Thar Cernunnos has the power to take him back to his own time, but while clues crop up regularly, they are always enigmatic, often cryptic, and seemingly impossible to solve. However, it is his emotional involvement with native girl Senicca that presents the greatest challenge. If he makes the wrong decision now, in two thousand years time, the consequences will be fatal. In accurate and fascinating detail many aspects of everyday life in these times are disclosed. The story explores what it was really like to live in a Roman town. The principal character experiences the sounds of the market place, the smells from the wine bars and food shops, and the choking smoke from the industrial quarter. But it is the people and their cultural and political organization which reveals the unique economic ambience of the town during this dangerous period. The story also weaves a strange tale of unearthly powers of priests, the terrifying predictions of Celtic Gods and the struggles, perils and small triumphs of surviving in a time filled with savage conflict.

Book In Search of Lost Time

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marcel Proust
  • Publisher : Standard Ebooks

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 2630 pages

Download or read book In Search of Lost Time written by Marcel Proust and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2023-06-08T17:20:08Z with total page 2630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through seven volumes, the narrator of In Search of Lost Time recounts his memories as they occur to him. An innocuous treat—say, a small cake paired with a cup of tea—may awaken memories buried deep within the narrator’s mind; memories cause more memories to surface. Like the cathedral builders of old, a whole life and the world around it are thus formed anew, slowly and methodically, by uniting pieces of the narrator’s life for the sake of the reader. This recollection takes us through the narrator’s childhood, weaving the social web his family finds itself entangled in, his first crush and coming of age, his gradual appreciation of art while finding his place into society, his hurtful obsession over a young woman, and, ultimately, the consolation that what had been lost in his youth can be regained. Firmly grounded in Modernism, In Search of Lost Time is not a work about memories but memory. By leading the reader in circles, sometimes on a glorious wild goose chase, Proust holds a mirror in front of the reader, sending us back to our own memories and experiences, no matter how pleasant or uncomfortable. By its very nature, it’s a difficult exercise about one of the defining features of humanity: our ability to manipulate time by recalling and, often, recreating it. C. K. Scott Moncrieff’s English translation is as highly regarded as the novel itself. Moncrieff used Remembrance of Things Past as the title, which was not a translation of the French title but a quote from a Shakespearean sonnet; this edition uses the translated title that the work is best known by in English. Just as Proust passed away before finalizing the last three volumes, so Moncrieff passed away before completing his translation; the final volume was translated by his (and Proust’s) friend Sydney Schiff, under the pseudonym Stephen Hudson. Only the first four translated volumes are currently available in the public domain. The remaining three will be added to this edition as their copyrights expire over the next few years. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book Best Short Hikes in Arizona

Download or read book Best Short Hikes in Arizona written by Don Laine and published by The Mountaineers Books. This book was released on 2005-12-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * More than 60 short Arizona hikes (ranging from a fraction of a mile to just over 7 miles round trip) * A mix of popular hikes and little-known gems showcasing scenic Arizona hiking * Many hikes in or accessible from major metro areas plus destination parks and landmarks Don and Barbara Laine present the best of the best of Arizona's short hikes-with an emphasis on "user-friendly." To make selection easy, a "Hikes at a Glance" chart lists trails by distance, elevation gain, difficulty, and location. Other charts list hikes by best places to admire rock formations, see desert plant life, enjoy scenic views, explore historic and prehistoric sites, relax along a shady stream or lake, take the kids, or see wildlife. Important details such as entry fees, restrooms, drinking water, and campground information are listed up front; there's a map and elevation profile for each hike. That's to say nothing of the breadth of experiences (from sandy desert floor to steep mountainside and riparian environment) awaiting you; or the detailed trail descriptions with tips on where Hollywood movies were filmed and background on old cabins and mines. Most hikes are rated easy or moderate-making them perfect for families-plus a selection of more strenuous hikes. Regions include the Phoenix, Sedona, Tucson/southern Arizona, and Flagstaff/northeastern Arizona areas; the Grand Canyon (north and south rims) and Petrified Forest National Parks; and Organ Pipe and Chiracahua National Monuments.
