Book Mechanical Behavior of Materials under Dynamic Loads

Download or read book Mechanical Behavior of Materials under Dynamic Loads written by Ulric S. Lindholm and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An adequate physical and mathematical description of material be havior is basic to all engineering applications. Fortunately, many prob lems may be treated entirely within the framework of elastic material response. While even these problems may become yuite complex be cause of geometrical and loading conditions, the linearity, reversibility, and rate independence generally applicable to elastic material descrip tion certainly eases the task of the analyst. Today, however, we are in creasingly confronted with practical problems which involve material response which is inelastic, hysteretic and rate dependent combined with loading which is transient in nature. These problems include, for instance, structural response to moving or impulsive loads, all the areas of ballistics (internal, external and terminal), contact stresses under high speed bearings, high speed machining, rolling and other metal working processes, explosive and impact forming, shock attenuation structures, seismic wave propagation, and many others of equal im portance. As these problems were encountered, it became increasingly evident that we did not have at hand the physical or mathematical description of the behavior of materials necessary to produce realistic solutions. Thus, during the last ten years particularly, there has been considerable effort expended toward the generation of both experi mental data on the dynamic mechanical response of materials as well as the formulation of realistic constitutive theories. It was the purpose of the Symposium at which the articles in this book were presented to discuss and review recent developments in this field.

Book Some Wave Propagation Problems in Plastic viscoplastic Materials

Download or read book Some Wave Propagation Problems in Plastic viscoplastic Materials written by Munirathnam Valathur and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lubliner suggested that the uniaxial constitutive equation (1.1) be used in the numerical solution of wave-propagation problems, and that the results approximating those of either hypothesis may be obtained in extreme cases. He further showed on the basis of an extremely simple, piece-wise linear, model of plastic-viscoplastic behavior, that results approaching the viscoplastic hypothesis will be obtained under one or more of the following circumstances: (1) weak impact, (2) long bar, (3) short 'relaxation' time (or natural time of the material); that converse conditions will lead to results approaching the plastic hypothesis; and that intermediate conditions require the use of the general constitutive equation. The purpose of the present study is to test further the validity of Lubliner's suggestions by means of numerical solutions of representative wave-propagation problems in bars whose mechanical behavior is described by the uniaxial constitutive equation, slightly modified to account for loading-unloading behavior.

Book Split Hopkinson Kolsky Bar

Download or read book Split Hopkinson Kolsky Bar written by Weinong W. Chen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-11 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors systematically describe the general principles of Kolsky bars, or split Hopkinson bars, which are widely used for obtaining dynamic material properties. Modifications are introduced for obtaining reliable data. Specific experiment design guidelines are provided to subject the specimen to desired testing conditions. Detailed Kolsky-bar examples are given for different classes of materials (brittle, ductile, soft, etc) and for different loading conditions (tension, torsion, triaxial, high/low temperatures, intermediate strain rate, etc). The Kolsky bars used for dynamic structural characterization are briefly introduced. A collection of dynamic properties of various materials under various testing conditions is included which may serve as a reference database. This book assists both beginners and experienced professionals in characterizing high-rate material response with high quality and consistency. Readers who may benefit from this work include university students, instructors, R & D professionals, and scholars/engineers in solid mechanics, aerospace, civil and mechanical engineering, as well as materials science and engineering.
