Book excerpt: In their dense state, granular media can either flow like fluids or behave like solids, when they are jammed. The first part of this thesis deals with the flowing regime. We begin by presenting the non-local rheology and discuss this model with respect to the other ones proposed in the community. In order to probe this model, we perform experimental measurements of the velocity profile in an avalanche flow in a narrow channel. This setup allows to observe both the fluid regime and the creep of the supposedly jammed region, in the depth of the channel. We probe the non-local model on the experimental results. The fit of the theory raises the question of the definition of the boundary conditions on such system. We therefore perform molecular dynamic simulations on an incline plane setup in order to fit the non-local model and measure the free surface boundary condition.The second part of this thesis investigates the elastic properties of jammed granular media weakly confined. Near the rigidity (jamming) transition of the medium, elastic moduli decrease and exhibit different scaling laws in their dependence on the confining pressure. We therefore perform acoustic measurements of compression waves at vanishing pressures, by the mean of parabolic flights. We then revisit the model of inter-particle contacts. This enables to predict the elastic behavior of the medium over a wide range of pressures: from evanescent to high pressures, at which the prediction from the mean field approach using the Hertz contact model has been shown to be valid. Last, we present preliminary results of shear wave propagations.

Book excerpt: I experimentally investigate jamming in a quasi-two-dimensional granular system as a function of packing density and show that a maximum in the height of the first peak of the pair correlation function is a structural signature of the jamming transition at zero temperature. The same signature is also found in the second peak of the pair correlation function, but not in the third peak, reflecting the underlying singularity of jamming transition. I also study the development of clusters in this system. A static length scale extracted from the clustering reaches the size of system when the system approaches the jamming point. Finally, I show that in a highly inhomogeneous system, friction causes the system to jam in series of steps. In this case, jamming is obtained through successive buckling of force chains.

On the theoretical side, progress is slowed by the lack of a simple framework, such as the Boltzmann-Gbbs paradigm in the case of equilibrium thermodynamics. On the experimental side, the enormous structural complexity of real systems poses serious obstacles to comprehension.Similar difficulties have been overcome in equilibrium statistical mechanics by focusing on model systems. Even if they seem too simplistic for known physical systems, models give us considerable insight, provided they capture the essential physics. They serve as important theoretical testing grounds where the relationship between the generic physical behavior and the key ingredients of a successful theory can be identified and understood in detail.Within the vast realm of non-equilibrium physics, driven diffusive systems form a subset with particularly interesting properties. In addition to blunting the Japanese thrust toward Australia and the transpacific line of communications, it put General MacArthur's forces in a favorable position to take the offensive. But this little known campaign is significant for still another reason. It was the battle test of a large hitherto-inexperienced U.S. Army force and its commanders under the conditions which were to attend much of the ground fighting in the Pacific. Costly in casualties and suffering, it taught lessons that the Army had to learn if it was to cope with the Japanese under conditions of tropical warfare. Samuel Milner holds a graduate degree in history from the University of Alberta and has done further graduate work in political science at the University of Minnesota. During World War II, he served in Australia and New Guinea as a historian with the Air Transport Command, Army Air Forces. Upon completing Victory in Papua he left the Office of the Chief of Military History to become historian of the Air Weather Service, U.S. Air Force.
