Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blue Bird: Souvenir Book Over in the corner is the huge fireplace where Mummy Tyl cooks all the family meals, and against the wall is the dresser containing both cooking uten sils and table dishes. The great bread-bowl and milk jug and sugar-bucket are conveniently at hand, and in the corner near the fire is atall barrel under the pump. It looks as if it would be perfectly fascinating to climb into that barrel some day when no one was looking, work the pump handle vigorously and give one's self and one's clothes a thoroughly delightful shower bath - only, of course, one wouldn't choose Christmas Eve, when the water is sure to be cold. As soon as you have discovered what an interesting place this cottage living room is, you find that the chil dren have waked up, the Fairy has come in, told them that as she really can't do without the Blue Bird, they must set out at once to find it for her; and, best of all, furnished them with the magic diamond that is more useful than the strongest microscope that ever was invented, for just one turn will enable the children to see things as they really are inside, even down to the bottoms of their souls. And, of course, when the diamond is turned, you can see all those things, too. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Interpretation of Maeterlinck's Blue Bird She was clothed in spiritual truth. The light of her understanding shone upon souls as the noonday sun, bringing unfoldment, joy, and peace. Pure as dew upon the petals of roses in the flush of dawn, was her thought to all mankind. Her lips spoke never censure or blame, for beneath the surface and under veils hidden from the material eye, she saw the divine in every soul. Strong as the Ivy did her love cling to those committed to her care. Within that fragile form breathed a soul so great! Many times have I heard her exclaim, "Ah! I could mother the Earth if it were possible." Greater love than this can no one give. She lived for others. The Saviour's command, "Feed my Lambs," she hath fulfilled. Ever they shall call her blessed. Many shall read this little book in wonder and silence. The tree is known by its fruit: and her reaping shall be through all Eternity. Book excerpt: Mytyl and Tyltyl, the children of Mummy and Daddy Tyl, are spending their Christmas Eve gazing at the extravagant party of their rich neighbors, when suddenly the door flies open to reveal an old fairy. She explains that she’s looking for the Blue Bird—the only thing that will save her sick daughter—and enlists the children to help her in her quest. The children, with the aid of the family cat and dog whom the fairy has given the power of speech, readily agree to the undertaking. Maurice Maeterlinck was a Belgian author whose work was highly regarded; indeed, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1911 with special recognition given to his dramatic works. His play The Blue Bird premiered in 1908, and the prose version for children presented here was written by his lover Georgette Leblanc five years later. The story has been further adapted to film, television and radio many times, including a role for Shirley Temple as Mytyl. This production was translated to English by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos, notable for also translating many Arsène Lupin novels for Maurice Leblanc: Georgette Leblanc’s brother. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: A "heartbreakingly resonant" thriller about the explosive intersection of love, race, and justice from a writer and producer of the Emmy-winning Fox TV show Empire (USA Today). "In Bluebird, Bluebird Attica Locke had both mastered the thriller and exceeded it."-Ann Patchett When it comes to law and order, East Texas plays by its own rules -- a fact that Darren Mathews, a black Texas Ranger, knows all too well. Deeply ambivalent about growing up black in the lone star state, he was the first in his family to get as far away from Texas as he could. Until duty called him home. When his allegiance to his roots puts his job in jeopardy, he travels up Highway 59 to the small town of Lark, where two murders -- a black lawyer from Chicago and a local white woman -- have stirred up a hornet's nest of resentment. Darren must solve the crimes -- and save himself in the process -- before Lark's long-simmering racial fault lines erupt. From a writer and producer of the Emmy winning Fox TV show Empire, Bluebird, Bluebird is a rural noir suffused with the unique music, color, and nuance of East Texas.

Book The Bluebird Story

Download or read book The Bluebird Story written by Dr. Don J. Harris and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-01-21 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Don Harris grew up in the swamps of South Louisiana, surrounded by wildlife. As a child, his typical pets included snakes, squirrels, raccoons, rats, bats, birds, alligators and armadillos. It’s not surprising that, as an adult, he became a veterinarian whose entire career has been dedicated to the care of exotic animals. “The Bluebird Story” evolved from Dr. Harris telling his toddler son, Adam, stories about the animals of his childhood. While the story captures a bit of the animals’ seasonal activities, what it really reveals is the truth behind the principle that giving, and acts of kindness toward our fellow creatures, brings about infinite blessings that could never be obtained otherwise.

Book The Story of a Blue Bird

Download or read book The Story of a Blue Bird written by Tomek Bogacki and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR). This book was released on 1998-04-10 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curiosity overcomes fear A little blue bird is afraid to learn to fly, but is still very curious about the world beyond his nest. "Mama, mama, what is out there?" he asks. "Nothing," his mother replies. "Now go to sleep." But the little bird can't stop thinking about what his mother said. What is this nothing? Finally, curiosity draws the little bird from his nest into the wonders of the great outside world - and he learns to fly. When he returns, his family asks him, "What happened?" "Nothing!" replies the little blue bird, happily. With his characteristcally expressive and richly textured illustrations, Tomek Bogacki - whose fables for the very young have been likened to those of Leo Lionni - shows how a little bird, in his search for nothing, finds everything.
