Book excerpt: A sweeping history of the often-violent conflict between Islam and the West, shedding a revealing light on current hostilities The West and Islam -- the sword and scimitar -- have clashed since the mid-seventh century, when, according to Muslim tradition, the Roman emperor rejected Prophet Muhammad's order to abandon Christianity and convert to Islam, unleashing a centuries-long jihad on Christendom. Sword and Scimitar chronicles the decisive battles that arose from this ages-old Islamic jihad, beginning with the first major Islamic attack on Christian land in 636, through the Muslim occupation of nearly three-quarters of Christendom which prompted the Crusades, followed by renewed Muslim conquests by Turks and Tatars, to the European colonization of the Muslim world in the 1800s, when Islam largely went on the retreat -- until its reemergence in recent times. Using original sources in Arabic and Greek, preeminent historian Raymond Ibrahim describes each battle in vivid detail and explains how these wars and the larger historical currents of the age reflect the cultural fault lines between Islam and the West. The majority of these landmark battles -- including the battles of Yarmuk, Tours, Manzikert, the sieges at Constantinople and Vienna, and the crusades in Syria and Spain--are now forgotten or considered inconsequential. Yet today, as the West faces a resurgence of this enduring Islamic jihad, Sword and Scimitar provides the needed historical context to understand the current relationship between the West and the Islamic world -- and why the Islamic State is merely the latest chapter of an old history.

Book The Great Story of Prophet Abraham Ibrahim in Islam

Download or read book The Great Story of Prophet Abraham Ibrahim in Islam written by Muham Dragon and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prophet Ibrahim known as Abraham in the Hebrew bible, is recognized in Islam as a prophet and apostle of Allah SWT (God) and patriarch of many peoples. In Muslim belief, Abraham fulfilled all the commandments and trials which God tried him with over his lifetime. As a result of his unwavering faith in God, Abraham was promised by God to be a leader to all the nations of the world. The Quran extols Prophet Abraham as a model, an exemplar, obedient and not an idolator. In this sense, Abraham has been described as representing "primordial man in universal surrender to the Divine Reality before its fragmentation into religions separated from each other by differences in form." The Islamic holy day Eid al-Adha is celebrated in memory of the bravery of Abraham, and Muslims perform the pilgrimage to pay homage at the Kaaba which Abraham had set up and reformed. Muslims believe that the prophet Abraham became the leader of the righteous in his time and it was through him that the people of both Arabia and Israel came. Abraham, in the belief of Islam, was instrumental in cleansing the world of idolatry at the time. Paganism was cleared out by Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) in both Arabia and Canaan. He spiritually purified both places as well as physically sanctifying the houses of worship. Abraham and Ismail (Ishmael) further established the rites of pilgrimage, or Hajj, which are still followed by Muslims today. Muslims maintain that Abraham further asked God to bless both the lines of his progeny, of Prophet Ismail (Ishmael) and Prophet Ishaq (Isaac), and to keep all of his descendants in the protection of God. They also believe that Prophet Muhammad SAW is a descendant of Prophet Abraham through Prophet Ishmael (Ismail).

In this quest for Truth, spanning many centuries and diverse civilizations, organized religion has shaped human life and determined to a large extent, the course of history. While some religions have been based on books, claimed by their adherents to be divinely inspired, others have relied solely on human experience. Book excerpt: All of the love stories in the Qur’an have the connotations of birr: protection, qawwam, endearment, sacrifice, acceptance, allowing redemption and return after sin, opening what others closed and uplifting those who others pushed down. They are the opposite of what is conventional, the oxymoron of the sinfulness that others display, and the righteous rain of barakah into the heart and mind of those who are distant from Allah (s.w.t.).

Book excerpt: The Rohingya are a Muslim group who live in Rakhine state (formerly Arakan state) in western Myanmar (Burma), a majority Buddhist country. According to the United Nations, they are one of the most persecuted minorities in the world. They suffer routine discrimination at the hands of neighboring Buddhist Rakhine groups, but international human rights groups such as Human Rights Watch (HRW) have also accused Myanmar's authorities of being complicit in a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya Muslims. The Rohingya face regular violence, arbitrary arrest and detention, extortion, and other abuses, a situation that has been particularly acute since 2012 in the wake of a serious wave of sectarian violence. Islam is practiced by around 4% of the population of Myanmar, and most Muslims also identify as Rohingya. Yet the authorities refuse to recognize this group as one of the 135 ethnic groups or 'national races' making up Myanmar's population. On this basis, Rohingya individuals are denied citizenship rights in the country of their birth, and face severe limitations on many aspects of an ordinary life, such as marriage or movement around the country. This expose of the attempt to erase the Rohingyas from the face of Myanmar is sure to gain widespread attention.

Book Ibrahim Khalil Allah

  • Pages : 318 pages

Download or read book Ibrahim Khalil Allah written by Karima Sperling and published by . This book was released on 2019-03 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Jews, Christians, and Muslims can agree on one thing it is wanting to be considered among the children and inheritors of Abraham the Friend of God (Ibrahim Khalil Allah, 'alayhi s-salam). Although they each approach his story a little differently and extract different inspirations, for all of them he is a model of uncompromising love and transcendent faith. The aim of this book is to present an interesting, informative, and comprehensive retelling of the story of the life of Ibrahim (as) according to traditional Muslim sources. Even among Muslim scholars, however, there has historically been a range of accepted narratives and interpretations. All of this variation makes for an unusually complex story with its share of controversy. Rather than causing confusion or conflict, these differences actually bring to light the beautiful nature of Islam itself - as it was revealed by God and lived by His Prophet (sall Allahu 'alayhi wa s-sallam), an Islam we must try to remember and do our part to maintain in today's world, an Islam that is inclusive, expansive, and accepting of diversity. God willing, this book conveys an invitation from our father Ibrahim (as), the best of hosts, the one who loves us, to sit down together in his company, to experience his hospitality in a slightly new way, and to let him share with us his story.
