Book excerpt: A novel of growing up a Hungarian in Romania under Communism. In the novel Story of a Stammer, Gábor Vida asks a fundamental question: Where does stammering come from? In the process of answering this question, he discovers that an entire historical period and an entire world has been stammering, too. Through Vida's eyes, we see that stammering comprises all the lies accumulated over time and over generations, because nobody had ever articulated what they felt or thought, nor done what they really wanted. Nobody, Vida shows, had ever told the truth. Describing life in the 1970s and '80s under Romanian Communist dictator Nicolae Ceauçescu's authoritarian regime, Vida writes with disarming honesty, breaking taboos and chronicling the ways in which tyranny and exploitation seep into family relationships. The novel charts the first two decades of a young Hungarian man's life in Romania, telling a story of coming to terms with a stammer, loneliness, and an unstimulating environment where religion, alcoholism, and suicide are the most common escape strategies. A Bildungsroman, a novel about Transylvania, a chronicle of minority life, a sociological analysis of cultural identity, and ultimately a deeply personal account of a historical era, Story of a Stammer is a major contribution to contemporary Hungarian literature--an unfailingly serious yet humorously delightful witness to a turbulent period in recent history.

He already knows a lot of jokes, but thinks he has one big problem standing in his way: his stutter. At first, Billy thinks the best way to deal with this is to . . . never say a word. That way, the kids in his new school won’t hear him stammer. But soon he finds out this is NOT the best way to deal with things. (For one thing, it’s very hard to tell a joke without getting a word out.) As Billy makes his way toward the spotlight, a lot of funny things (and some less funny things) happen to him. In the end, the whole school will know -- If you think you can hold Billy Plimpton back, be warned: The joke will soon be on you!

Book Self therapy for the Stutterer

Download or read book Self therapy for the Stutterer written by Malcolm Fraser and published by The Stuttering Foundation. This book was released on 2002 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malcolm Fraser knew from personal experience what the person who stutters is up against. His introduction to stuttering corrective procedures first came at the age of fifteen under the direction of Frederick Martin, M.D., who at that time was Superintendent of Speech Correction for the New York City schools. A few years later, he worked with J. Stanley Smith, L.L.D., a stutterer and philanthropist, who, for altruistic reasons, founded the Kingsley Clubs in Philadelphia and New York that were named after the English author, Charles Kingsley, who also stuttered. The Kingsley Clubs were small groups of adult stutterers who met one night a week to try out treatment ideas then in effect. In fact, they were actually practicing group therapy as they talked about their experiences and exchanged ideas. This exchange gave each of the members a better understanding of the problem. The founder often led the discussions at both clubs. In 1928 Malcolm Fraser joined his older brother Carlyle who founded the NAPA-Genuine Parts Company that year in Atlanta, Georgia. He became an important leader in the company and was particularly outstanding in training others for leadership roles. In 1947, with a successful career under way, he founded the Stuttering Foundation of America. In subsequent years, he added generously to the endowment so that at the present time, endowment income covers over fifty percent of the operating budget. In 1984, Malcolm Fraser received the fourth annual National Council on Communicative Disorders' Distinguished Service Award. The NCCD, a council of 32 national organizations, recognized the Foundation's efforts in "adding to stutterers', parents', clinicians', and the public's awareness and ability to deal constructively with stuttering." Book Stutterer Interrupted

Download or read book Stutterer Interrupted written by Nina G. and published by She Writes Press. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nina G bills herself as “The San Francisco Bay Area’s Only Female Stuttering Comedian.” On stage, she encounters the occasional heckler, but off stage she is often confronted with people’s comments toward her stuttering; listeners completing her sentences, inquiring, “Did you forget your name?” and giving unwanted advice like “slow down and breathe” are common. (As if she never thought about slowing down and breathing in her over thirty years of stuttering!) When Nina started comedy nearly ten years ago, she was the only woman in the world of stand-up who stuttered—not a surprise, since men outnumber women four to one amongst those who stutter and comedy is a male-dominated profession. Nina’s brand of comedy reflects the experience of many people with disabilities in that the problem with disability isn’t in the person with it but in a society that isn’t always accessible or inclusive.

Book excerpt: In a book that explores the phenomenon of stuttering from its practical and physical aspects to its historical profile to its existential implications, Shell, who has himself struggled with stuttering all his life, plumbs the depths of this murky region between will and flesh, intention and expression, idea and word. Looking into the difficulties encountered by people who stutter--as do fifty million world-wide--Shell shows that stutterers share a kinship with many other speakers, both impeded and fluent. This book takes us back to a time when stuttering was believed to be 'diagnosis-induced, ' then on to the complex mix of physical and psychological causes that were later discovered. Ranging from cartoon characters like Porky Pig to cultural icons like Marilyn Monroe, from Moses to Hamlet, Shell reveals how stuttering in literature plays a role in the formation of tone, narrative progression and character.--From publisher description.

Download or read book Knotted Tongues written by Benson Bobrick and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-01-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A former stutterer, Benson Bobrick here offers his perspective on the condition as well as an interesting history of how physicians have treated it. Stuttering, or stammering (the terms are interchangeable clinically), occurs four times more frequently in males and ranges from mild hesitation in speech to severe disability. Hot irons were applied to stutterers' lips in the Middle Ages, and in the mid-19th century, risky tongue operations were performed in failed attempts to effect a cure. Bobrick discusses famous stutterers Charles Darwin, Henry James, Winston Churchill, and Jimmy Stewart, and he describes the adverse impact of their condition on their lives. In this century, psychological trauma has often been cited as the cause of stuttering, but recent evidence points to a genetic disorder involving a disturbed auditory function. Therapeutic practices differ, but the author credits a voice feedback system with bringing his condition under control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After failing at university, socially isolated and driven by his stuttering to the point of despair, an unexpected encounter with a book about Zen provided a glimmer of hope. Then, little by little his fortune changed, and the stutter - which, previously had posed the greatest obstacle - became the catalyst for the development of a new and profoundly liberating perspective on life. Interwoven with Brocklehurst's personal story, The Perfect Stutter explores the nature of language and verbal communication, the significance of mistakes, and the roles that values and value-judgements play in our lives. In so doing, the book highlights the importance of our deepest desires and their relevance to our understanding of what it means to be a human being. About the Author After his stuttering ceased to be a problem, Paul Brocklehurst returned to university to study Speech Therapy, then Psycholinguistics, and then finally, he completed a doctorate in Experimental Psychology. As a researcher, he is best known for his investigation of the nature of inner speech, the relationship between stuttering and the fear of communication failure, and for his development of the Variable Release Threshold Hypothesis of stuttering. In recent years he has become an active member of the stuttering self-help community and is well known for his promotion of mindfulness in people who stutter and for his work as director of the Stammering Self-Empowerment Programme. After retiring from academic life, he moved to the French Pyrenees where he now divides his time between walking in the mountains, growing organic vegetables, running mindfulness groups, and writing.
