He's disciplined, dedicated, and hiding a dark secret he'd prefer to keep buried. He won't allow anyone or anything to disrupt his control. When he's ordered to Earth to help with a secret weapon, he vows to do everything he can to help their allies, even work with a statuesque, prickly scientist. He and Finley get off to a rocky start...but when the Kantos send a team of assassins after Finley, Sabin will do anything to protect her. Sent to a secret facility deep in the Australian desert, Finely and Sabin are drawn closer and closer. She sees beyond the warrior to the man, and he uncovers a passionate woman. Book excerpt: Matthew’s life was normal. He finally got a break from school and homework (which he never did anyway). “My name is Matthew Edwards.” Suddenly his life is transformed when he meets a treelike boy who sends him on a mysterious quest. “Well, my name is Ouron Jackson.” However, the young boy has been trapped as a tree for as long as time. Matthew runs into wild creatures and adventures as he tries to obtain the five mystical items the boy had requested. “Welcome, my old friend,” Ouron said bitterly. Matthew is faced with tribulations along the way while meeting new friends and enemies. During his quest, he meets a girl who catches his eye. She wore a smile that filled his heart with joy, and her hair was brown with blonde running down the tips. Her eyes were purple. But she’s a vampire. “My mother stepped forward and bit me on my arm. Now I am here. If I look at someone and press my eyes shut, I can erase someone’s mind.” Sea dragons, magical swords, and dream-stating take over Matthew’s new “normal” life. He screamed wildly as he charged. Their weapons clanged together. Blue sparks flew from both. Matthew quickly looked and saw that some of the tree warriors climbed up to the black pulsing square in the sky. Matthew even faces Death, literally. Betrayal, love, and sacrifice are intertwined in this story. Can Matthew save the world and everyone he loves?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before dying of his wounds, Sir Roger Verity extracts a promise from an unlikely friend. The oath results in a fateful struggle. England is in the grip of civil war. Men such as Shadiz the Master are in demand. A Romany half-blood, a notorious corsair warlord, he has left the Mediterranean to become Prince Rupert's mercenary leader. Under the guise of war between royalists and parliamentarians, he intends to take Fylingdales Hall and Estate in the North-East of Yorkshire. The bastard son of Sir Richard of Fylingdale and his beloved Romany mistress, Shadiz was shunned after her death giving birth. In January 1644, when Verity is mortally wounded by parliamentarian troops allied to Fylingdales and his sixteen-year-old daughter is held prisoner, it becomes clear to Shadiz someone at the Hall is aware of his secret obsession with Catherine Verity. Becoming her guardian means he must guard her against his enemies at Fylingdales. He keeps her at his base, an ancient lodge deep in Stillingfleet Forest close to Whitby. Shadiz’s followers includes Richard Massone, his half-brother. Richard is the legitimate owner of Fylingdales but has been denied his inheritance by his uncle Francois Lynette. His mother installed her younger brother as custodian after her husband's death at the hands of Shadiz. Despite appearances, Richard is at the lodge to extract revenge for the death of his father, and his sister. It is his fears for Catherine that causes increased friction between the half-brothers. Shadiz realised when he gave his oath to her father that he would also have to protect Catherine against his dangerous attachment that began over six years earlier. Catherine proves herself to be an exceptional young woman. While realising Shadiz's volatile nature, instinctively she does not feel threatened by him. Her remarkable healing skills have been taught to her by the strange Romany matriarch, who she discovers is Shadiz's grandmother, Mamma Petra. Her mature compassion is hers alone. Despite the twelve years difference and their opposite natures, the attraction between Catherine and Shadiz, though for a long time she has no inkling of his feelings for her, grows. Eventually she learns of the Romany custom Shadiz instigated years earlier of twin pendants, his moonstone and her jet. Through this extraordinary link Catherine reveals a sixth sense that Shadiz finds increasingly hard to resist. Yet, he goes to extraordinary lengths to do so for Catherine's, or as he calls her Kore's, sake.

Book The Chevalier d Eon and his Worlds

Download or read book The Chevalier d Eon and his Worlds written by Simon Burrows and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cross-dressing author, envoy, soldier and spy Charles d'Eon de Beaumont's unusual career fascinated his contemporaries and continues to attract historians, novelists, playwrights, filmmakers, image makers, cultural theorists and those concerned with manifestations of the extraordinary. D'Eon's significance as a historical figure was already being debated more than 45 years before his death. Not surprisingly, such sensational material has attracted the attention of enthusiasts, scholars and literateurs to 'the strange case of the chevalier d'Eon'. He has also attracted the attention of psychologists and sexologists, and for most of the last century his gender transformation has been viewed through a Freudian lens. His cross-dressing, it was usually assumed, must have a psychosexual explanation. Until the second half of the twentieth century the terms 'Eonist' and 'Eonism' were the standard English words for transvestites and transvestism respectively, but 'Eonism' was also, thanks to Havelock Ellis, widely regarded as a psychological condition or compulsion. However, in the mid-twentieth century, new ideas about gender-identity disorders led to d'Eon being redefined not as a transvestite, but a transsexual - a person who considers their sex to have been 'misassigned'. The essays in this collection contribute to d'Eon's rehabilitation as a figure worthy of scholarly attention and display a variety of disciplinary approaches. Drawing on new research into d'Eon's life, this volume offers original and nuanced readings of how a gender identity could come to be negotiated over time.
